Fast Microwave Clean Up Trick
post from A Little Tipsy
I guess this might be the start of a spring cleaning series of posts. I wanted to post my microwave clean up trick in response to a great question from Kara on the Range hood post. I have not tried goo gone on my microwave, but what I have tried is water. Yep, plain old tap water. Many of you probably already know this one, but if you don't , YOU SHOULD!
Fill a mug about halfway with water. Microwave it until it boils, I usually do about 3 minutes. Pull out the mug and wipe with paper towels. The steam from the boiling water makes wiping all that gunk out a snap.
I have also heard others putting a slice of lemon or some lemon juice in the water to give it a nice fresh scent. I have not tried this one, but I want to.

Water and vinegar work well, also. Same method. Just put it in a bowl and let it go for like 2 minutes. I try to stay away from harsh cleaners, and I'm one of those weirdos whose mouth waters at the smell of vinegar, so I just mix two parts water/1 part vinegar and get a rag and wipe down the whole house. The smell only lasts for 2 or 3 minutes, then you're left with clean streak-free surfaces.
wet a sponge and put it in the microwave for two minutes and a similar thing happens. just be careful removing the sponge b/c it will be very hot!
My mom puts a bowl of water with a slice of lemon to make the smell go away.
xo
I just taught my 13yo how to do this. Works great!!
What works as a double cleaner is, wet a washcloth that is getting sour, put some lemon juice on it as well, and heat it for about 90 seconds. Use the wash cloth as it cools to wipe down all the walls and ceiling of microwave...then rinse.
I do this all the time.
Thank you so much!! I didn't know about this trick. I absolutely hate all that hard gunk and i am usually cursing the entire time i'm scrubbing. I will try this next time....thank you!!
I didnt know about this either! Thanks!
woooow thanx for the awsume tip, After i comment this im off to go clean my microwave. THANX SO MUCH!!!!! =)
Thank you for sharing! I didn't know about this and am always afraid of using cleaners in the microwave especially.
oh cool! that is nice.
cool! i didnt know that! thanks
My clean up trick is my ex. =P He cleans the microwave for me. I clean everything else lol.
I put baking soda into the water (which is usually in a bowl)!
Thank you! I'll have to try... right now! ... my daughter set a bagel on fire in the microwave a while back and had been looking for yet another method for trying to get more residue and lingering smell out.
can't wait to try it :D
This has been one of my favorite cleaning tricks for years.
It should be noted that when microwaving water, the water can become superheated, and may not appear as hot as it actually is. This can burn a person that disturbes the superheated water as it may explode when jostled. Just a safety warning for all. Great idea though!
great tip for lazy college students!
This is so simple!!! I never knew this! Thank you so much.
@i_r_keiko@xanga - That's great! Vinegar does the same to me hahahha.
@JessxMaxine@xanga - lemon, great trick.
I'm doing this tomorrow morning!!!
Spring cleaning?! Well, skipping winter sure is fine with me!
I have heard about the sponge method, but have never tried it or just water. Usually I just take out the microwave plate and wash it in the sink. I'll have to try this for the top and sides next time though.
I use white vinegar to do this with. Heat in cup for about a min- 2 min. then let set for another two and wipe clean. The vinegar steam also disinfects. (or so I've been told)
I just wipe it out with the dish rag when I do dishes, or when it needs it.
trying it right now =)
just read this! thanks so much!
trying this RIGHT now!! Water's in the microwave as i type! =)
seemed to work well! :)
