  • House Keeping - Not Fun

    House Keeping

    House Keeping,

I'm sure we each have our own title for what we do each day to keep our household running. I like the term "house keeping" It seems to portray that I am in charge of the house and its business and not the other way around. Some days though, I look at my house and feel like it is the ball and chain in my life, I would much rather escape into my children, hobbies, or businesses. Some days even paying bills is more appealing. I've often wondered why some people just love to keep house, and others like me have a hard time finding a balance between the Fun and the House.

I Think that part of my problem is I have never learned organization real well.  Growing up we always worked  together, quickly before company arrived or Saturday, to clean up the house.  This was great to help us all learn to get along, and work quickly, but not so great in the organizational department.

I like to do things simply, I am not the type to have my spices organized by alphabet or my clothes color coded, I much prefer the fastest way possible. I have many areas in my house that are showing/ telling me that I need to change the game a little! Case in point, My cupboard where I keep all my lunch containers, drink bottles, freezer containers, ect is always spewing things at me each time I open the door, Partly because my 6 & 2 yr old empty the dishwasher, and mostly because there is absolutely NO organization under there! Any Ideas? My latest Idea is to find some baskets to slide on the shelves to hold the smaller containers that do not stack, and also to hold up the drink bottles that refuse to stand up! Oh yeah, and don't get me started on the lid situation down there.....I have a small drainer that I have on the shelf for them, the idea was good but it doesn't keep the little ones in. Puting each lid on the dish it belongs to is out because i dont have the space, what brilliant ideas do you ladies have for corraling your lids?

The other area that drives me crazy is the linen closet, I can never get my big comforters/quilts to stay folded and stay on the shelf. I see my mom-in-laws blanket stash and wonder if she has a secret folding technique that I somehow missed or if I'm just that bad at folding. I have basicly given up on that closet, I have just folded the big blankets and laid them over the edge of the pack & play! I'm also looking for tips on office organization, I have very limited space and I am not a great flat surface person, My Dad would say i'm working on my PHD! ( piled higher & deeper!).

Some of you reading this enjoy your house hold duties and find other things, such as sewing, a drag. Please share what you do each day to keep your house maintained and orderly. I want small steps please, maybe tips you picked up from your mom or aunts. I know it seems crazy for a lady who, comes from a large family, has two children,& been married for 8 years to be asking for advice, but hey, I need it. Now if it is advice you need on flowerbeds, cutting wood, driving a truck, dogs, scrap-booking, or house plants, ask away!!!

One small thing I do, most days I wash at least one load of wash, this way I have less to fold and deal with at one time. I have tried to do it all in one day, but that is just to much of one thing, I can feel crazy coming on!!

That is a habit I learned because of being from a large family, If you tried to do all the wash for 10-13 people in one day it would take you 24 hrs, especially since we line dry most stuff!! Here is a couple little tips I have, any thing that goes on a hanger in the closet, can also dry on a hanger, hang socks matched & by the toes that way when you take them off the line you roll um together and they are ready for the drawer, also do most of your sorting as you wash and hang, and fold it as you take it off the line & put it in the basket!! I'll admit that I Like to wash & Hang laundry, put the part were it is suppose to land in the drawers, Ahhh well, that doesn't always happen!!

Please leave comments with your footprints, and any websites that have tips,  Thanks for reading!!

I use a larger bowl for all of my lids.  I have 2 of the larger bowls and I rarely need them both.  I also had a problem with all of my tupperware stuff.  I recently went through it and found tons of stuff that didnt have lids or I simply didnt use.  It is all now gone!

Good luck figuring it all out.  It is always a pain!

Have you tried flylady? (www.flylady.com). Her system involves getting your clutter back in order by taking "baby steps" to establish daily routines that help cut out the "crazy" in your life and give you more time for fun. Doing a load of laundry a day is actually one of her suggestions. So is decluttering your "hot spots" (those flat surfaces where things like to collect) for 15 minutes each day (setting a timer and then stopping when the timer is done). You can sign up to receive daily emails that will give you a focus each day (it's free) and just take on as much of the system as you can handle at a time. I know a ton of women who swear by the site, including my mom-the biggest pack rat in the world, who has improved significantly since following flylady. I've adopted just a few things, including a before-bedtime routine. Anyway, if you haven't heard of it, it's worth a look.

As for tupperware- *shudder* I hate tupperware. Loathe it. I grew up in one of those houses with the 'death cabinet" of tupperware that used to attack you every time you opened it. I'm fully convinced there is no possible way to keep tupperware in order, especially with all those damn lids. The plasticware becomes even worse when you have kids. Every kid has like 80 sippy cups with mismatched lids and little snack containers, etc. My only suggestion would be: seriously re-evaluate your tupperware and get rid of most of it. Definitely get rid of those lids or bottoms that don't have a corresponding lid or bottom. You will never use them again and they just take up space. I find that I acquire tupperware against my will regularly when family members forget it at family functions or people have me take home leftovers. So I regularly and purposely "forget" it at other people's houses to make up for it Nobody NEEDS a ton of tupperware. Each kid only needs two sippy cups at most; one for the wash while the other is being used. Any more than that and dishes pile up while space becomes limited. Instead of managing a billion little gladware sandwich boxes and snack containers with all their separate lids, it might be worth getting rid of those and getting everybody in your family who regularly packs a lunch one of those lunch boxes that has the tupperware that fit inside or interlock, such as laptop lunches or other bento boxes http://www.laptoplunches.com/. Then you just need a few tupperware for potlucks or storing leftovers and you're set. Good luck!

I have two babies (7 mos and 22 mos) so cleaning while they are awake is downright impossible, unless I put them in front of a movie (which I don't like to do regularly).  I usually go on a cleaning spree every evening between 9 and 11 pm.  We have a small house, so I can pretty much get everything cleaned up in those two hours, except maybe deep cleaning (I HATE cleaning the bathroom so that usually stays dirty).  I've found that if I don't feel like cleaning I'll schedule cleaning "blitzes" where I'll do a mad cleaning dash for 20 minutes (I set the timer to make it a bit of a competition for myself).

I definitely struggle with the whole housework thing though.  I'd much prefer to be cooking or sewing or scrapbooking than cleaning.  I like organizing, but not cleaning...like dusting, washing dishes, scrubbing the floors...those things SUCK.

When I fold sheet sets, I store the flat and fitted sheet (and extra pillow cases) in one pillow case.  It keeps the sheets folded and everything all together and neat in one little package.

  • Snowprints@xanga

Downsize as much as possible. Yeah, you may need 18 Tupperware bowls one day (maybe Christmas) but looking at all that unnecessary clutter for the rest of the 364 days of the year is useless.

Oh yeah and I know I'll get many thumbs down but I still use disposable plates, utensils, and napkins. Sorry but Im happy with the extra time I have for my daughter, family, studying, and rest.

For my dishes and pans with lids, I have one of those plate racks with the tall dowels that I stand them up in next to the pans. I found it for, like, $4 at Ross and haven't dropped a single lid on my feet since!

My linen closet looks like a tornado struck...and it truth, it has...our big, scaredy cat, "Tiger", will shove the sheets and blankets off the shelves to hide behind them! There's a reason I call him, "'Ger"...or "GRRRRR!!"

@Divine_Diva_in_NC@xanga - That's such a good idea! (And at least I'd just be picking up/washing the pillowcase and not the whole set when Tiger strikes!!)

@der_lila_Stern@xanga - Where do the other halves go?! I swear Tim brings them home for work...but from there...every time I've cleaned out our container cabinet, I'm found lonely pieces! WTF BBQ?!

  • Teenaged_Decisions@xanga

I don't have much of a problem with organization, though that is mainly because I don't have much to organize. The only things that get piled up on my turf are papers and laundry, the former because I never want to deal with the folder-keeping, and the latter because I like to color sort my clothes for the wash and that requires more clothes than just throwing everything in the wash.

As for the tupperware - get rid of it and stick with aluminum foil or saran wrap lids on a handful of bowls. It's a pain saver.

Seeing as I'm not a parent, I can't really imagine what it would be like to have a home run you constantly. Have fun with that. xD

  • Divine_Diva_in_NC@xanga

@Snowprints@xanga - I am disabled, so we use paper plates a lot.  It makes it so much easier on me not having to load unload and put away dishes out of dishwasher or struggle to stand at the sink to wash.

  • NotUeberMommy

@jesusmoshes2@xanga - I think it's www.flylady.net , NOT .com. She's great, and has helped me loads - and it's free. But you still need to DO it

  • BarniganFlarn@xanga

@NotUeberMommy - yeah, she must own both because .com gets you there too but I guess the official site is .net

  • MangoWOW@xanga

Sorry I dont really have any advice. My mom has raised me to be super neat and organized so I never had a problem and I never needed to look up any "tips".

    Good luck though!

  • der_lila_Stern@xanga

@filtered_sunlight - I really dont know what happens to them.  I stopped caring! lol.  It just isnt worth it!

And for the linen closet?  Jim can magically fold sheets so they look nice.  Even the fitted ones! so that is his job.  But when I had to do it, I half-assed the folding and then put it all in one pillow case.  The pillow case was then set nicely on the shelf.  Everything stays together and looked at least mostly presentable! lol (Im going to post this anyway, even though I just read that someone else said it.  Makes me feel so less special.  boo!)

  • olasdelmar@xanga

we have a chest that blankets can get thrown in.

I can definitely identify with pretty much all of your post though. I got really into using my clothesline and have not got it totally down how to get it all folded away into the drawers and hung in the closets. I try to dress my kids husband and self out of the clean laundry pile. We also try and use the clean dishes before they get put away in the cabinets. I don't know what to do... it is a vicious cycle I think. Really it is a big problem for my husband, the seeming 'chaos' of stuff in our house. I don't think it's all that bad, just a big part of having small messy children and a lack of excess time. Once in a while I'm super inspired and can admire clean clutterless tables, counters etc. but most of the time it's moving stuff from one place to the next.

Moving helps somewhat--but can cause additional challenges :)
Thanks though. I have learned something here from the responses and your clothesline tips.
