  • My Baby Has a Rash!! Help!

     My 19 month old son has a rash all over his body.  It's heaviest around his diaper area, and red.

    This is sort of what it looks like.  More red, and less bumpy.

    He has red bumps on his face and neck, and they're skin- color from his neck down.

    This is what his legs look like.  This isn't a picture of him, so it's not exact.  But pretty close.

    We haven't switched laundry detergent, and he hasn't had any new foods.  Does anyone know what could have caused this?

    that looks similar to my son's eczema.A lot of things causes him to have flare-ups including being exposed to something that he is allergic to like grass or having his skin become too dry.  I would try using an unscented dye free lotion first (with a little bit of cortisone mixed in).

    Eczema?  Probably very itchy for the poor little guy:(.  Rashes are so common and they come and they go. I would definately see a doctor.  Good Luck!!!

  • viarah@xanga

    have you taken him to the dr
    I know theres a virus going around here the produces rashes similar to that when its getting out of your system, I'd go to the dr good luck

    It could be scabies? Little mites like headlice that bite and are on your body not your head. Simple application of cream from a pharmacy and wash clothes and bedding and they will be gone. Very very contagious and easy to catch, usually from people, rarely but possible from pets. Not everyone has a rash, just people sensitive to them.

    my baby had a really bad rash and i used a product called triple paste that worked so amazingly! i realized it was diaper rash from having diarrhea but i would call your doctor..

    I would definitely go to the doctor.  It could be anything from a milk allergy to just a rash from a virus like a cold.  My kids every once and a while get a rash when they have a cold and I guess it is just one more way for the virus to present itself.
    Good luck!

    Megan gets something similar in the Summer, especially on her shoulders from the heat/sweat, but it usually goes away quickly; overnight or less. It sounds like it could be a number of things...I'm with everyone that said a trip to the doctor is in order.

    @P1AutismMom@autisable - @viarah@xanga - @MiSS__InSomnia@xanga - @aquarius_lovedove@xanga - @mamagiraffe - Here's an update, since I posted this yesterday.
    His rash is mostly gone, just a some bumps still on his legs and feet.
    I used some bleach to clean the kitchen floor a few days ago, and I think that's what caused the reaction.
    Our doctor is a half hour away, so I don't think I'm going to take him.
    It doesn't seem like it's serious, but maybe I should still take him?
    @Erika_Steele@xanga -
    also, I'm pretty sure he has eczema.  He almost always has a really rough, dry patch somewhere on his body. I always put a heavy lotion on those spots.   I didn't know it could spread to his whole body.  Does that usually clear up on his own?

  • Erika_Steele@xanga

    @KimisBarbie@xanga - It can definitely spread all over the body.  The bleach could have definitely caused the reaction.  when John's eczema gets really bad, it won't clear up on its own.  I have to use just on it and give him antihistamines.  If you don't want to give him antihistamines then Benadryl cream (or generic equivalent) helps.  I mix 1 part cortisone, 1 part benadryl and that helps.  There is a product line that you can find anywhere called Gentle Naturals that is awesome.  The eczema cream clears it up pretty fast especially if you use it with the eczema wash.  If the redness does not at least go down a little bit with the benadryl cream, I would call the doctor in a couple of days.

    Since I also have eczema I have always used free and clear detergents, no bleach (but the free and clear clorox 2 is fine), and free and clear dryer sheets.  I never used the baby stuff b/c they still contain perfumes and sometimes dyes that can still irritate the skin.  I clean the tub that my son uses in castile soap (the same kind I use to make his bath) b/c even too much residue from the "green" cleaners I use sometimes gives him flare ups.

    hi there.. it doesnt look like your son has eczema.. try to apply some cornstarch baby powder on your son's body. When my son had hives on his diaper area and legs, I applied some and it worked for him... It will help cool the skin (for the itchiness) and help the hives to subside. I would also definitely call your local doctor to ask what you can do.

    @KimisBarbie@xanga - My daughter had eczema on her legs. I didn't know, until at one of her check ups the doctor noticed it. She prescribed a special lotion, and I used it like..twice. And it cleared up. If I feel her legs getting dry again, I just use it again.

  • P1AutismMom@autisable

    @KimisBarbie@xanga -  I'm so happy to hear it is clearing up. Skin reactions are common so unless there are other symptoms and the baby is not suffering miserably then doctors usually take a wait and see approach.  Hope all goes well :)

  • CombinedEffort@xanga

    @Erika_Steele@xanga - i use that ezcema cream on my son, too.  I put some all over him last night, so that might have helped too.

  • CombinedEffort@xanga

    @Fairywife@xanga - our doctor prescribed steroid cream, but it never really made it go away.  Just kind of helped it calm down some.  I lost it though :(

  • CombinedEffort@xanga

    @P1AutismMom@autisable -  Thanks :)
    Yeah, I figured they would just tell me to put lotion on it, and wait and see.  I don't really want to drive 30 minutes and pay a $25 co-pay to hear that. haha

  • Charisbella@xanga

    Did he just have a vaccination?  That can happen after some of the vaccinations.

    I forgot what its called, but it starts with a "R" My daughter had it when she was younger and the doctor told me that it was very common in infants and toddlers. My doctor told us to put Cetaphil Creme or Lotion on her after showers and basically to keep her skin moisturized. I also use Tea! You can use tea bags, first boil water and then let the tea sit in the water for a little bit and then just apply it on the skin where the rash is. of course, make sure that the tea is not boiling hot! let it cool to a warm temp before applying. don't wait till its cold though.

    Wow, this looks like when I was a kid and had poison ivy. But, that probably is not what it is. It also looks like eczema. :/

    I'm sorry that I can't be of any help at all, but I do hope that you find out what this skin condition is and are able to get it treated and fixed. :) Maybe you should take him to a dermatologist?

  • latemama@xanga

    I understand the drive and the co-pay, but if this rash continues or occurs again, I'd take him in.  My 22 year old daughter had serious problems with eczema and we needed prescription creams for her most of her life.  We also used Eucerin on her when her skin was dry.  Bathing her too often dried her out more.  But, it is helpful to find out exactly what the rash is to know how to treat it.  We've had many different rashes at our house over the years and some of them need to be handled in different ways.  Hopefully your son will clear up soon and be rash free.

  • MommaSather@xanga

    Always call your doctor.. But it looks exactly like a rash my daughter had at that age.  The doctor said at that time I could put a drop of iodine on each spot to help lessen the redness but that it was a common illness and not a rash that 1-3 year olds get.  (Although he never told me what it was called)

    He did however tell me, that it could take anywhere from 3 months to 1 year to go away.  But all I could do was wait it out.

  • MommaSather@xanga

    BTW, it did eventually go away almost one year exactly from when my husband and I first noticed it.  She is now 6 years old, and has never had it return.  But from your description alone, I would say it's the same thing!

  • twistandshoutx@xanga

    does he have a fever and a very sore throat too?

  • NotUeberMommy

    @KimisBarbie@xanga - My son has eczema, too, and I want to warn you NOT to put cortisone on it unless he's in pain or extreme discomfort! Although cortisone works in the short run, in the long run it just causes the skin to get thinner and more sensitive - hence, more outbreaks of eczema. Also, coritsone = hormones which may impede growth.

    The best thing to put on his skin is a non-scented heavy cream with no preservatives added. We use a vaseline/cetomacrogol mix (should be available over the counter since it's just heavy cream with no hormones in it, ask your pharmacist). My son is 2 1/2 now and almost eczema-free as long as we keep his skin in good condition.
