Dear Mom, I Figured It Out
Dear Mom,
I know that you are in the last stage of your life. The life that you have been desperately clinging to for the last year to hang around just another day and another day and another day. You even opted for twilight sleep instead of full anesthesia during your breast cancer surgery because you were so frightened you would never wake up to see us again. I thought you were crazy.
I wondered why would anyone that has suffered so deeply throughout her entire existence and is in so much pain most of the time want to cling to life so desperately, especially when I know you have a strong faith that you will spend eternity in heaven with your creator in a new and perfect body free of earthly strife.
All I had to do was take a look at my two boys to finally figure it out. What Mom doesn’t want to be there to experience the love that having a child provides much less the 10 that you bore. What mom does not want to be there for her children, grand children and great grandchildren to see them enjoy their triumphs and care for them through their struggles. What Mom doesn’t look forward to the hugs, the kisses and that corny greeting card you receive every mothers day.
Although I know it won‘t be long before we have to part ways, to say our final goodbyes and experience our last embrace I want you to know that I get it and want to say before you go: Here’s to you Mom for hanging out with us another day.. I love you!

That is a very nice tribute to your mom. My mom passed away 5 years ago this past march, and my mom-in-law just passed away a week ago. You couldn't have said it any better as to why they want to stay around. Jon Maust
