School supply shopping is a little different for me than what I see posted by the moms on momaroo considering that my teachers don't send home a needed list of supplies. Only one of my college classes so far has had a special supply list separate from the regular needed stuff and that list was two items: a peechee-style folder and colored pencils.
Supplies I will keep in my bag for fall quarter:
-4 ink pens (2 blue, 2 black)
-Jump drive
-Mini stapler
-Pencils
-Eraser
-Highlighters
-Accordion folder (got for free from Mom's workplace)
-Spiral bound notebook
-Emergency kit
-
HAND SANITIZER - very important-Textbook
I don't remember how much all of that cost. I'm not quite sure I want to know.
But the best way to save on stuff? I think it's actually to get extras of stuff you'll know you or your kid(s) will need. Stuff like paper, pens, crayons/markers, and pencils can be gotten for fairly cheap at sales or at the dollar store. Personally I'm hesitant to get my supplies at the dollar store because I'm concerned about that stuff being cheaply made and I want my stuff to survive at least one quarter in my backpack. I also think it's best to get the brand name stuff such as Papermate and Crayola. It'll last longer than the cheap RoseArt stuff and you won't have to go back as often to replace items.
Oh and it might be a good idea to leave the kids at home when you do the shopping. That way the kids aren't begging for the designer/Jonas Brothers/cartoon versions of things.

target usually has really good deal on the back to school items. and it is a bit harder to just leave the kids at home, but it is a great mini vacay when you do :)
I got lucky and my daughter started preschool after the rest of the schools began (she started school this past Friday). When I went to buy her a backpack and the rest of her supplies (not that there's much she needs in preschool!!), it was already half off. I'm tempted to purchase a bunch of supplies soon and stock up for next year (for both her and her brother). I think it's a wise move.
