Barbies Setting an Example?

Well,
I was cleaning my basement with my 8 year old sister, and getting rid of the toys that she didn't want, to make room for our new pool table and air hockey table we were getting. She has tons of Barbies, Bratz, and MyScene dolls and loads of clothes for them.
This doesn't sound so bad right? Well, it takes a turn. I asked her what clothes she wanted to keep for them, and what ones she didn't. She picked all the short skirts, barely-there tops, and skimpy dresses to keep for her dolls.
Is it just me, or does that not seem right? When I was little and had barbies, they weren't nearly as. . . slutty as dolls are these days.
Do you think this sets a very good example for this generation of kids? Do you think the way the dolls that they play with's clothes effect the way they will dress?

I dont think I'd ever get my kids slutty looking dolls in the first place >_< I mean with Bratz dolls, it doesnt quite matter what they're wearing, they just look a little trashy :/
No way. At least not in my case. When I was little I remember dressing my barbie up like she was about to walk the street. I'm an incredibly conservative dresser as an adult. I've never worn a mini skirt or tube top and never, as a teen or adult, have thought that was acceptable clothing. It all goes back to the parents. If you raise your kids right you have nothing to worry about (well, almost nothing).
Oh for crying out loud. They are dolls. The parents should be responsible for how their kids dress. If they let their kids out of the house dressing like a freaking toy, then they are too stupid to be raising children. I had barbies when I was a kid....since when did it have so much influence on my life? Kids have no sense. Parents SHOULD but sadly most don't.
Like I said on the other post. They are dolls. Seriously. If a child is dressing themselves like a stripper b/c of a doll, it is the parent's fault.
I hate those dolls and don't plan on getting them for my daughter. As of yet she is 2 and has no knowledge of their existence. I played with barbies as a kid and they had some slutty clothes but not predominately slutty clothes. Most of my barbies were older and few of them even had pants or jeans. I will admit that my friends and I had our dolls have sex and were quite perverted with them and thinking back on it I am disturbed. I don't think its wrong, I turned out just fine, but a parent doesn't really want their kid thinking that way. Still if my daughter wants to play with them someday, I won't object outright, just make sure to talk to her and teach her what it is to be a young lady.
People need to get over it, like some above has said if your child walks out the door wearing slutty clothes then its on the parents not the damn doll....ITS JUST A DAMN DOLL, people always have something to say about everything thats going on. it has nothing to do with the product its the parents that need to be in charge.
dolls are not to blame for parental shortcomings or those of the society that produced them. i wrote this on the other post.
They are just dolls. It's up to the parents to instill the morals and values, not the doll. If you don't want your kids looking like their dolls, then don't buy them the same type of clothes!! Simple as that. I played with Barbies as a kid and I can't even remember what clothes I put on them. It was just a toy to play with and that was fine. My mom never let me go out the door looking like a hooker.
I think culturally Barbie has always represented the "it" girl of the day. In the 70s when I was a lil un it was the mini skirts, go-go boots, strapless dresses....really not too different from what is on the Bratz and Barbie dolls currently. I think as we grow up it may more be our perception of what is appropriate...after all we dont' see it an issue as a kiddo....but we look at it when we are older and think WHOA! Cooch skirt! Dude...Barbie is rockin some huge boobs and that dress is nutti' but boobage...etc.
:^)
*Barbie* is still fairly tame if you look at the outfits that she's sold in and which are sold by Matel for her. Bratz should all be recalled and melted down in a massive bonfire...and from what I've seen of them, "MyScene" isn't far behind. My daughter will not have Bratz or any other doll that looks like a streetwalker.
i remember when bratz first came out and looking at them and thinking to myself "who in the world is going to buy that doll for their daughter?" well, apparently a lot. i personally would never buy a bratz doll for any of my daughters (i do have a 3 and 1/2 y/o son right now). just the name doesn't sit well w/me. do i think that if ony of my daughter's played with the doll that they'd dress like that? well, i'd be the first one to see what my child wears, and if it's anything that is not age appropriate/decent for public, she won't wear it...end of story! i remember with my barbie dolls that when you undressed them, they had flesh colored underwear printed on the lower private part. some of the clothes that i had for her were a lil' risque, but nothing slutty.
i definitely agree that the parents are the ones that should be monitoring what their child is interested in/doing. it's time for people to stop pointing fingers at what they can put their blame on and become responsible for their own actions (and those who they are responsible for)
Man Ioved Barbies, and from what I can see, their outfits aren't that bad (but I did find pregger Barbie weird). Bratz dolls just look like whores to me, and if I was a parent I wouldn't let my kid play with them.
I think people worried about this when I was little too. I grew up in the 80s. I remember a few of my barbies had shirts that showed their bellies. They had some bikinis and skin tight spandex. They wore the styles of the times, and parents disapproved of barbies even then, worrying they were too sexy for little girls. I think today's dolls are ridiculous because their body parts are exaggerated. It used to be the boobs and hips were exaggerated, with tiny tiny waists. Now the dolls have even larger hips with tinier wastes and HUGE heads, eyes, and feet. Why is so much emphasis put on eyes and feet? To sell makeup and shoes, perhaps? I dunno...the look of the flat chested, bug-eyed big-footed dolls of today bother me even more than the blonde bimbo big-boobed dolls of my childhood.
Oh my gosssshhh. I hate those dolls. Bratz dolls most especially... I'm never going to get those dolls for my kids... I swear.
there's even a dancing around the pole doll. generation is going down the drain.

Hello, my name is Dr. Zeus and i am a nature freak. Love to read books on new happenings in health and food world. I am married and have 2 children. I specially love to read health, children literature and also enjoy writing and designing greeting cards. I am always game to try to do new things. I am currently surfing this website Buy Acai Berry its a good natural superfood and i think you should also give it a try.
I don't see a problem with Barbies themselves.... but I wouldn't buy my children Bratz dolls, for sure. If a child is dressing skimpy, it's not a doll's fault... it's their parents' fault.
When I was little, my Barbie went back and forth between acid-washed stripper garb and straight up nudity. As an adult, I am not a stripper or a nudist and I don't own any acid washed clothing. Bratz and MyScene are just dolls, albeit ugly dolls, but just dolls - they are fantasy. It's all about the parenting.
i HATE bratz. seriously. what kind of people do we want our girls to be????? bratty sluts? apparently so
i dont think the bratz dolls are even all that pretty... they look like they've all been supporting a pack a day habit since they were like 12. i would never by that stuff for my daughter.
@Lilpinkbunny@xanga - i know people who buy slutty clothes, hide them from there parents and dress in them in the school bathroom, so in that sense, parents dont have any control over that.
it deff. doesn't set a great example for the kids of this generation. simply for the fact that these dolls are now less than wearing clothes and kids who have these bought for them are now wanting to dress like these dolls because they think it's something natural and normal. which it is simply not! if there is nothing done about it sooner or later they won't be wearing any clothes at all!!
My kids don't play with Barbies....they don't set a good example and I really don't want them dressing a full grown woman's body. Baby dolls are fine.
I pray to God my daughter never likes those stupid Bratz dolls. Those things are horrible.
I think a lot of the time people take kids' toys too seriously. I know when I was little I played with Barbies all the time and I really hardly even remember it. It didn't have any affect on my psyche at all.
Then again, I always thought those huge formal dresses and fairy tale Barbies were the fun ones so I don't know. I loved my wedding dress Barbie, mermaid Barbie, and there was some other one that I had that had brunette hair and came in a huge pink sparkly princess dress.
Needless to say, I don't dress like a fairy princess now so I don't think they have that big of an affect. lol
