We started at around 10 or 11 months, but didn't do it 100% consistently until they were a year and a half old. Now it's done every night.
I started brushing my little guy's gums when he was 3 months old. It's when he started cutting his first teeth and brushing them with the infant brush made them feel better. Now, he has 6 teeth and he has a 'mini' real toothbrush. I put paste on it and every morning he brushes his teeth on his own. Then at night, I brush them well for him. I think it's starting a great brushing habit!
At 9 months, we try with Megan, but she's at the stage where she thinks EVERYTHING is food, so it's hit or miss depending on how tired we are each night -- do we really feel like fighting with her? LOL.
i started brushing my son's gums around 4 months, and got him his own toothbrush when he turned 1. he's 18 months old now, and he loves to brush his own teeth. I always have to brush them a little when he's done. We brush them at least once a day.
My niece is 2 and I dont believe anyone brushes her teeth yet. Which is funny bc she eats all the grown up food that we eat (garlic, onion and so on...LOL) I got her a little care bears toothbrush yesterday and some children's toothpaste, its funny I read this the day after I bought all that. I thought they might be a bit late in starting that but since I am not a mom myself, I really didnt know.
You should start brushing and going to the dentist once they have teeth. We didn't start with our first that early, but we wised up with our 2nd.
yeah, my son started to teeth around 3-4 months so i got that gum massager with the infant toothpaste and used it to help with his teething. he had almost all of his teeth by a year and a half. i've always made a big deal with letting him pick out his own toothbrush and toothpaste. sometimes he doesn't like to brush his teeth because of the flavor of some toothpastes, but i tell him that if he doesn't brush them that his teeth will be stinky. he does brush his teeth, but i'm still brushing them/holding his hand while i'm brushing them to make sure they are cleaned properly (he's 3 and 1/2). he hasn't seen a pediatric dentist, but he's had his teeth checked at his wellness yearly check-ups. now that my new insurance kicked in, i want him to be seen by a dentist since he's had his baby teeth for a year and a half. they may not get brushed 2x a day, but they are brushed at least 1x a day. they look pretty white to me ;)
I agree with the numberscott, you should at least start when the teeth have emerged. You should ideally start going to the dentist then as well. I'll be more dilligent about brushing my next child's teeth.

Hmmm...I'd say regularly around 18 months but they have played with toothbrushes and imitated their older siblings since they had the muscle coordination to do so. The twins LOVE to brush their teeth and absolutely insist on doing it every time anyone else does, lol!
I gave my son his own toothbrush at 20 months, he loves it, calls it teeth we're brushing our teeth several times a day now.
At around 16 months to 18 month is a good time.
I brushed her gums and/or wiped them with washcloths everyday. She cut her first teeth at around 3 months, but I had to wait until 4 months to use the baby toothpaste. At a few days short of a year, she loves getting her teeth brushed (or possibly the cherry flavored toddler Orajel toothpaste?). Whenever I pick up the brush or the toothpaste tube, she gets really excited. Her first dentist visit is next week.
Gettin' em used to "gum" on a toothbrush with baby safe paste seems to be the way. This picture is ridiculously cute!
We're in the Netherlands. Around here, dentists recommend starting when the first tooth cuts, so that's what we did (K was 4,5 months old). Starting from 24 months, the enamel is hard enough to be brushed twice daily, and that is what is recommended from that age - so that is what we do with him.
On daycare days, we brush teeth before leaving (after breakfast) and before bed. When he's home, we brush before naptime and before bedtime. He's not a big fan of it, but we've developed a routine where he gets to brush (i.e. eat the toothpaste...) after we're done. And he likes to have a count-down until he's allowed to brush, LOL
I been brushing my daughters teeth scince she was about 6 months maybe earlyer. She was the tiniest thing and even baby tooth brushes were too big for her mouth. :)
