Questions about birth control pills!
I recently got put on the birth control pill Loestrine24Fe. The doctor warned me about nausea but I didn't think it would be this bad. If anyone knows of anything that might help to get rid of it, even if it is just a fraction lower than it is now, please give me some tips...
And if you know of any other good cheaper birth-control pills, could you please tell me about them?? I would really appreciate it. It's vital to, well, never mind. I won't get into that.
Any information that can be given is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Augh birth control. Why does there always seem to be problems? lol. I'm sorry Im not going to be much help.
I wish I could take birth control but for some reason it gives me a month long period instead of regulating it.
I stopped hormonal bc all together and I'm not going back. I do the Fertility Awareness Method and I LOVE it!! It is much more reliable than people think. According to Toni Weschler, MHP, research indicates that FAM has a failure rate similiar to or lower than condoms. (3-4%) When used perfectly the failure rate is less than 2%. (Taken from the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility".)
When we decided to have a baby, it only took one cycle to conceive! :) So that was wonderful. Plus, it is free. You can check the book out of the library or buy it for cheap on amazon.com and then, nothing to buy but condoms if you want that extra protection. :)
FAM does take a few months to get use to, and even more if you are coming off hormonal bc. But, we just used protection while waiting for my body to adjust. And, since hormonal bc messes with my moods, I don't have to worry about that.
The majority of my female friends use this method and only one of them has gotten pregnant without planning it. So...out of the girls I know who use it, 1 out of roughly 75-80 (we're all on a discussion board together) isn't bad! :) (And she admits they had unprotected sex too close to her ovulation date so, they weren't "following the rules" of fam, so to speak.)
It's not for everyoe but, I love it and it makes understanding my body much, much easier. So...that's just one option....I'm sure you'll get lots of other advice and hopefully find something that works for you. I hope the nausea goes away!
I am on OrthotryciclenLo. I have been on it for the past three years (well since my son was born). I have only had one scare and that was in December because I was off my birth control for a month and had one time where we got caught up in the moment. Whew. Haha.
But this stuff is pretty awesome. I don't have any side effects, that I notice. My period comes every four weeks and lasts for four to five days. It costs $60 for me every month, but that is without insurance. With insurance it was still $25 a month, but I think it all depends on your insurance compnay and who and where you get it from.
Good luck with your birth control and hopefully you can get that nausea under control or finder a better pill for you.
I am not into the pill I've just known too many people that get knocked up on them...I have used the patch which was fine except seemed to mess with my hormones a bit, so now I do the nuvaring and it;'st he easiest thing ever, with a bonus of super super light periods. and you don't have to do anything for the 3 weeks that the ring is in. I'm a fan.
do google mircette. overall it has good reviews.
Luckily for you, the nausea should subside after your body adjusts to the pills. I'm not sure what time of day you take them but taking your pill with a meal or before bed can help with the nausea. If you're not currently taking the pill at mealtimes or bedtime, adjust the time of day that you are taking your pill when you start your next pack.
I was on Levora for over 4 years- no scares, no problems, and it cost only $10 for three months when my insurance covered it. I LOVED it! The only real side effect I had was a little weight gain. After I got married, it went up to $10 per month because my insurance wouldn't cover it. I only changed to the NuvaRing because we travel a lot and I wanted something easier. It's much more expensive ($40/month, again insurance won't cover it), but worth it for the piece of mind. There are many, many different types of BC, if you are having side effects call your doc and get switched until you find the one that is best for you.
You want to get rid of the nausea? Stop taking the pill.
thanks for all the help and advice so far!!
@sweetmumbleb@xanga - it takes an hour for it to usually kick in really... i take it at 11pm before i'm ready to go to bed.. but lately i've been staying up past 12.. so... yeah.. thanks!
I'm on that BC pill too. But I have never been hit with the nausea. Try taking it with a snack or with a meal. Or at bedtime. That might help.
Man, when I first started taking the pill before I got married, it took a good three months before the nausea subsided (not to mention it did end up making me sick a few times....). I think my body was just overly sensitive to the hormones, but it eventually stopped giving me problems (just gotta be patient, I think). However, the nausea wasn't the only side effect I experienced...I also gained a persistent 15 pounds (despite consistent exercising and a healthy diet to keep my weight down). But the worst side effect I experienced was this: I lost any semblance of libido whatsoever, COMPLETELY, for about a year. It was terrible. I'd have to practically force myself to ever want to have sex, and when I did, I did it because I felt so terribly for my husband. I'd cry myself to sleep sometimes because I felt like such a terrible wife...I didn't even make the connection that it might be the BC, but after I finally just quit, two or three months later it was back to normal! Because of that, I don't think I'll ever go back to the pill, ever - I'm actually shopping for alternate forms right now, so this post and its comments were somewhat helpful.
Anyways, to answer YOUR question - taking it with a meal always helped a little for me. I actually would always take it at midnight, every day - that was when I was usually going to bed. It was an easy time to remember, I got to sleep off the nausea, etc. Good luck!
i was on loestrin 120 (very similar) and never had that side effect. if it's too much to bear, STOP taking that brand and try a different one! you don't have to go through that
a way to help the nausea though is to take the pills before you go to bed, you'll sleep through feeling ill.
@Vallery@xanga - i have the same problem (with libido), but i'm on a medication that requires me to be on the pill. once i finish it and am settled into my new routine, off i go! feeling normal again is worth irregular periods and cramping (i think....).
:]
@PenaltyLife@xanga - Most definitely! My cramping is usually pretty unbearable, but I'll take that for a few days a month over never, ever wanting to have sex!!
I just got switched from Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo to Tri-Lo-Sprintec, basically brand to generic. When I was on the brand I'd only get sick when I missed a pill and had to take two, and so far I'm not having any problems with the generic but I'm only 3 pills into my first pack. So you might just want to switch brands. The first brand I was on gave me horrible mood swings and wieght gain. You don't always get on the one that's right for you right away.
OrthotryciclenLo and if you check walmart or target its only 4 or 9 dollars!
i'm on aviane. it's a generic that's more estrogen based than progestrin based, i believe. or the opposite. i don't remember. all i know really is that it works amazingly. i have less painful cramps, a shorter and much lighter period, and less pms. :D less pms is always good!
with any pills, you're going to get nausea and other side effects for the first few weeks. it's your body getting used to the pills. i had it but after about 3 weeks, i was fine, and have been since. i've been on it for a little over a year now.
with my insurance, which is state insurance, it's free. otherwise i know it's gotta be pretty cheap.
i used to take Loestrine24Fe, til i went to get more & it was fifty one bucks.
i'm on trisprintec now. it's nine bucks, for me.
@xEmox_xBabyx@xanga - Usually it goes away after the first month, but for some people it never goes away. For now you could try Ginger Ale and crackers in the morning (that's when it was worst for me). I liked orthocyclen and I'm on microgestin Fe which is alright. I haven't had nausea with either of them and they're generics so a 3 month supply (4 packs) is $17. Anything with "tri" in the name is a tri-cyclic pill which has 3 levels of hormones (the highest amount in the beginning and decreasing thereafter). Pills like that tend to make people nauseous because they have a higher amount of hormone. Microgestin Fe and Orthocyclen are both monocyclic low dose pills. So you are less likely to get nauseous and as an added bonus you can go 3 months without a period (something you can't do with a tri-cyclic pill). If it's not better after your second pack I'd go see the doctor and ask for a lower dose pill. But keep in mind some people just don't tolerate the pill and you might have to switch to a different method.
I hated hormonal birth control! It made me feel like I was pregnant. I didn't want to feel that way unless I actually was! Needless to say, the nausea is one of the reasons why I stopped the birth control! Barrier and natural methods all the way for me! Good luck! I hope you find something that works for you!
I'm on the same pill, and I had nausea once when I accidentally skipped two pills (you take two the next two days to catch up, so extra hormones).
I asked my sister about it (she's a nurse in labor and delivery) and she says it's the same thing as morning sickness or when you throw up during delivery. It's the body's way of dealing with rsurges of hormones. So, the nausea will probably go away, but keep in mind that I was taking two a day, not one.
From what I've heard, Loestrin is pretty weak hormonally compared to some other pills, but I haven't exactly researched it.
Well, I work at CVS and dispense birth control 50+ times a day. If you have insurance, you should call your insurance company and ask them what some of the lower co-pays are. If you don't have insurance then just call local pharmacies, and ask around. (HINT: Pharmacies can't tell how much your prescription will be if you have insurance, so don't call them and say, "I have a script for Ortho Tri Cyclen Low, and I want to know how much that will cost with my insurance." We can't tell until we have the script in our hands, and run it through the computer.)
Ask your doctor for one that has a generic, because they are cheaper, and they are the SAME THING as the brand. I promise. Brand doesn't work better just because it costs more.
I used to be on Yaz, it costed $65 at one pharmacy, and $53 at another. You never know. Don't forget that a lot of Kroger's, Wal Mart's, K Mart's & Target's have pharmacies, too.
Or, better yet, go to a Planned Parenthood. Bring a copy of your last pay stub, and they use your income to determine how much you pay for you birth control.
But yeah, if it's making you sick, you should switch. There are more choices than you think. Good luck, & hope you find something that works for you. :)
The only side effects I ever had on BC was weight gain and low libido. I've taken the shot, several different pills and was just on the Nuva Ring. Out of everything I loved he shot the best with the Nuva Ring coming in second. Sadly I can't take the shot anymore cuz of a family history with bone problems and the Nuva Ring is just too expensive for me. So I'm in the process of trying to get into the doctor to get on a pill, though I'm not looking forward to that. Goodluck with it!
Take it before bed and it shouldn't be as bad. That's what my cousin had to do with them. That's what I did with prenatal vitamins and it wasn't that bad, either.
