  • Popsicles that Don't Poison

Post from Lauren @ Supermom Central

I'm sorry to say it, but you might want to think twice as you reach for those Otter Pops this summer. Not only do they contain ridiculous amounts of man-made sugars but they get their pretty colors from food dyes, including the dastardly Red Dye #40. If you're wondering what in the world I'm talking about, PLEASE check out this article on the negative effects Red Dye #40 on children.

Luckily, several family-friendly companies actually care about our children's health and make superfun popsicles, brightened and sweetened with all-natural ingredients. Hooray for The Original Brand Popsicle - we will be enjoying you all summer long!

If you'd like to make your own popsicles (even more ingredient control) check out this fun post.

What other fun summer treats do your children enjoy?

I've never even heard of Otter Pops.

I think I'd rather keep a bag of those freeze pops around but in general making popsicles is more fun. It kills 30 minutes with the kids, they have fun, and they enjoy eating it more so than store bought because they're excited from having made them in the first place.

I remember Otter Pops from when I as little.

Now I make our own. My boys especially love orange juice pops.

I only buy Popsicle brand Popsicles.

our all natural ice cream bars aren't nearly as tasty as an otter pop. lol just kidding. I do remember eating a LOT of otter pops one summer. boxes and boxes. I think I'm OK. lol

We used to always make our own popsicles as kids. Thanks for the link.

Poison Pops bring back sweet memories of childhood on a summer's day.

My son isn't crazy about popsicles yet,but he does love the homemade smoothies and shakes that we get at a local cafe.  Right now he is enjoying cherries and peaches.  He loves it when I freeze berries for him.

ETA:  I didn't even like "Otter" Pops when I was a kid.  My mom rarely bought them.

Children are hyperactive. It's not a big deal.

dude I don't know what everyone else is thinking but Red#40 doesn't sound like something I want my babies to eat (myself either). I am not too over-the-top and so when some of my less diet/sugar/artificial "food" eating friends offer these to all the kids I let my 2 year old have one but trust me this is not a norm nor should it be. Props for those who give fruit and smoothies--food the way it was intended, w/o all that added unnecessary SUGAR!!!

Just one more reason the average American diet is making us sick.

last summer our fson had a freezie and he had a bad sugar crash after, and it wasn't even red.
I dont believe in pumping little bodies full of artificial dyes, and I am happy our children don't like them. They actually prefer the healthier home made stuff.

I don't like popscicles. i only freeze trix yogurt.

  • pretend2fly@xanga

i ate that stuff all the time when i was little... i'm okay =)

  • IdoNtDiE@xanga

i think that some of that red dye #40 stuff might be a placebo effect because when you give a child you expect to look for hyperactivity immediately after eating the popsicle but what about that high fructose corn syrup? that might be a factor.

  • DeEnergized@xanga

If you care so much, make them yourself at home with juice...god. People like you annoy me. All this hype about nothing.

  • momtokaynjay29@xanga

@olasdelmar@xanga - Yeah, I agree with you on that one. I have 2 kids myself. My daughter who is 4 gets spoiled all the time when it comes to sugary stuff. I know that we should let our kids be kids but when it comes to stuff that got tons of sugar it can be way to much to handle. My in-laws give my daughter ice cream, candies, pop and anything else that got tons of sugar. My husband and i don't give her that stuff but she gets her grandparents to give it to her.Now my husband and I live with his parents so they live downstairs of their house and that is how my daughter gets what she wants when she can not get it from us.
