How Accurate are Pregnancy Test Results When Taken Early?
I'm going a little out of my mind with pregnancy suspicion. I was off my birth control for the required 7 days for my period but also for an extra two days because I hadn't gone to the pharmacy.
Now I'm sitting here feeling nauseous, tired and trying not to move my boobs because they hurt. Since becoming pregnant 2 years ago (not having the baby) I'm very sensitive to what my body does.
I'm so stressed with waiting for my next period to come (I still have another week) and I'm wondering if I took test today or within the next few days could I get an accurate result. What do you think?

You can take a pregnancy test but i'm not sure how accurate it will be. If it comes out negative, you may still feel the need to take another one in a week to confirm it. I know I would. But what's the harm in taking one now right ?
Good luck :).
First Response is something like 87% accurate if taken a week before your expected period. So you could take one of those. Of course, there is still the chance that it could be wrong.
Just remember that even if a couple is doing everything right and trying to get pregnant, there is still only like a 20% chance each month of that happening. It could be possible that you are psyching yourself out because you are stressing about it.
You can get a false negative but you can't get a false positive. So if you do chose to take a test and it is negative, I would test again after missing your period (if you do, indeed miss it), but if it is positive, I would immediately stop taking birth control pills.
I'd take atleast 2 of the same kind of test... I took 1 for my first daughter... and 7 for my 2nd (which I am 8 months prego now) and only took 7 cause they came up faulty... not working... or not giving an accurate reading for either negative or postive if that makes any sense...
I always used First Response a week before my period and it has always shown POSITIVE (for when I was pregnant)... any negatives I had, I was not pregnant. So I highly recommend first response.
But remember, if you test negative, and then in a week still dont have your period- test again! Good luck!
@alaskamommy@xanga - sorry but I disagree. You can get a false positive, and I have 3 different times. My Dr says false positives are a lot more common then people think and the only way I can know for sure is a blood test.
Honestly, everyone I know has had accurate results using any brand. If you are pregnant, you are pregnant. And stressing about it and being anxious is just going to prelong your period from coming because stress effects your cycle. It sounds like you have had it rough and therefore are now just anxious but it's okay. I don't know about accuracy that much because I've never been pregnant but my friends who have been said something about the levels not showing up for a while on the test? Maybe someone else can confirm that... Oh and everyone I know (from age 25-35/college educated/women) have used the dollar store pregnancy tests! I think we have a Dollar Tree so you can basically get like 10/$10 instead of geting 1/$18. And they have all said pregnant when pregnant and not when not - no surprises.
@alaskamommy@xanga - You can get a false positive. That happened to me!!!
@DWLsMommy_05@xanga - @JJPrint3rd@xanga - I think (but could be wrong) that with a false positive, you are actually pregnant, but the pregnancy ends early enough that it's not detected. A pregnancy test detects HCG which is the pregnancy hormone. If you have it in your system, you are or were pregnant. Early pregnancies do dissolve at times as a very early miscarriage...
@alaskamommy@xanga - you are in fact, wrong. I was just speaking with my Dr about this very thing, because I experienced a false positive very recently. He told me that, as I stated before, false positives are more common then people think. If I was or am pregnant, it would have shown up in the blood test as well. And it did not, and I had the blood test done the same day as the false positive showed up.
@alaskamommy@xanga - wow I am sorry that sounded really catty.. but my hubby and I have been hoping to conceive for almost 5 years now and every false positive breaks my heart.
@JJPrint3rd@xanga - I'm so sorry that you haven't been able to get pregnant. And I'm sorry for you false positives. I guess I need to do more research on the subject.....
@alaskamommy@xanga - @JJPrint3rd@xanga - because of the discussion (and personally not knowing anything about this subject but then what you guys have discussed), I looked it up. It seems that a LOT of people are at odds about this subject. Not sure why. This is what I found that sums it up best...
A pregnancy test taken at home can yield false positive results for several reasons. Even a pregnancy test performed on blood can show a false positive under certain circumstances. False positive are rare, but they do occur. Seeing a doctor soon after getting a positive pregnancy test result is always a good idea. A home pregnancy test works by measuring Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. When a woman is pregnant, placenta produced to nourish the baby produces in great volume. Normally most variants of the home pregnancy test cannot be considered accurate until taken on the date or a few days after a missed period.
One common corrupting agent to the pregnancy test is exposure to soaps or detergents. These can cause a false positive
result. Thus urine collection should be done carefully to avoid such
exposure. Many tests simply have one urinate directly on the stick used
to give results. If one must urinate into a cup, the cup should be very
clean and presumably free of any leftover soap or detergent deposits.
Another frequently common reason for a false positive pregnancy test is when women are using HCG injections in order to assist in getting pregnant. This means that HCG levels may register even when a pregnancy does not exist. Normally a blood test or obstetric examination helps to determine a true pregnancy from a false one. Theoretically, a man being injected with HCG could have a positive pregnancy test, even though one would know the man was not pregnant.
Other medications may also cause a false positive on a pregnancy test. These include anti-convulsants, medications to treat Parkinson’s disease, certain tranquilizers, and certain diuretics. Many of these medications could be dangerous to a growing unborn child, so it is very important to confirm results with an obstetrician if you are taking any of these medications.
Trophoblastic tumors, which grown in a woman’s reproductive system, may also yield a false positive on a pregnancy test. These tumors can also make someone feel pregnant, causing morning sickness
and swelling in the abdomen. This is because they also produce HCG.
When caught early, these tumors generally can be removed and cause no
further problems.
In some cases, hysterical or false pregnancy can also produce HCG that will be detectable on a home pregnancy test. As with trophoblastic tumors, a woman may manifest pregnancy symptoms that make the pregnancy seem more plausible.
In all cases, a positive pregnancy test means seeing a doctor soon to discuss obstetric care and set up a plan for medically addressing the pregnancy. If you have any of the conditions or take any medications above that might corrupt the test, this should be brought to a doctor’s attention so the pregnancy can be verified.
I have a question for anyone here that can answer it. How long after possible conception should you wait until you take a pregnancy test? Is there a certain amount of time to wait or should you just wait until you miss your period the next month? Please email me at anyabrow@aol.com with answers
