Would You Lie to a Child for Her Own Good?
There was a plane crash in Africa a few days ago, and the only survivor so far is a teenage girl who hung on to wreckage for 13 hours before a boat found her. What struck me about this story was one sentence, stating when the girl asked about her mother, who was traveling on the plane with her, her uncle told her the mother was in the room next door at the hospital.
The truth is, her mother has not yet been found, and is probably dead. On one hand, I can see why someone would want to give a young girl a false sense of security. On the other hand, I'm bothered he told such a bold-faced lie, even if he thought it was for her own good.
If he was going to lie, maybe he could have said something along the lines of "your mother hasn't been found yet but the Coast Guard is still searching for more survivors." Something overly optimistic but not technically a lie, since the girl will obviously find out about it soon enough.
Do you agree with his decision to lie to the girl? Would you rather know the truth or be lied to "for your own good?"

it all really depends on wat the situation is one. i mean for the uncle to lie saying that the mother is in the roomm next door when she hasn't even been found yet and maybe a 94% chance that she is dead is not something a teenage girl can handle. she might ask to see her mother. then wat would the uncle say to her now???? i think that he just should have said that she hasn't been found yet. i know that it is something very hard for a teenage girl to handle and all, i mean come on it's her mother were talking bout here!
if u find out any other info on this situation plz plz add me and give me all the up dates! im willing to help!
This lie is harsh.
I remember when my brother got into a bad car accident they told him then his friend died, but I don't think they should have told him at that point. They were still at the scene! They should have like most said, soften it a little but not a straight out lie.
@MangoWOW@xanga - Agreed.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tell the girl the truth she's a teenager!!! not a little 3 year old. i would be so mad if that was my uncle telling me my mom was next door and then the next day i found out my mom is possibly dead. those lies arent good in this case.
I don't think people should lie at all if they can avoid it... and the girl's 13, not 3 >_<
