I Can't Do This Anymore. I Need Help!
by Mama Bee Boo has had her cast for... going on 2 weeks. She has had to get a new one 3 times now and we still have another few weeks to go before she gets it off. She likes to get it wet because she knows she's not supposed to. When I cover it when its time to eat, she rips off the cover and gets it dirty.
I am going crazy. This just adds to my already busy schedule. With a son in baseball, both in swim lessons, BooBear in horseback riding lessons, PT and OT along with my photography and husband working more, I don't have the time to keep covering it at every meal time, bath time and swim time. It's driving me insane.
I need help. What are some ways I can make this broken arm thing easier on me? What are some tips you parents have learned with your kids in a cast? How did you keep them from getting them wet?
Shes a typical 2 year old who knows she's not supposed to do something, so she wants to. She has yet to learn her lesson because she is still jumping off the couch, off the stairs and going crazy on the trampoline with her brothers. They egg her on, too! They think their sister is the coolest kid they know which is cute and all but they egg her on. When they do something, she follows.
How do I keep her from getting it wet and having to get a new one for the 4th time? No matter what I do, she finds a way to get it wet! (even pouring her juice all over it!) HELP ME, SOMEONE!

"My daughter went through 2 casts before we found this waterproof
castliner material on the internet. She got the first two wet (broke
wrist at beginning of summer and tried playing around the pool and at
the beach with all sorts of contraptions to try to keep the cast dry
... nothing worked 100%). My ortho suggested this castliner, I bought
it and it was delivered to my home in 2 days ... went to ortho the next
day and she was cast into her 3rd cast with the waterproof material and
we were all so happy. We only wished we had found it sooner! She was swimming
in the pool, bathing, no stink, no itching and when the cast was
removed ... her arm & skin looked great! Here is the link ...

P.S. My ortho only recommends it for short arm casts b/c the water can drain out easier.
Great stuff!"
I know it'd mean that you'd have to get another cast done, but it would make the rest of the time easier, and you'll know about it if you unfortunately have another round of broken bones.
Don't they have some cast material that is waterproof? I've seen casts with that white, bubble-plastic looking stuff inside.
I was going to say DEF ask for a waterproof cast. My 2 year old daughter jumped off the couch and fractured her wrist, and we had to deal with a cast that wasn't waterproof for 2 weeks. It was torture. You really can't prevent it from being wet, since she is so young. I put a wal mart sack over my daughters cast when she ate, took a bath, etc. Bottom line, go back to your pediatrician (or call) and ask for a water proof cast. I'm surprised they didn't give you one in the first place. My daughter ended up getting the long cast (that goes past the elbow) because she kept taking her cast off. Only short casts can be waterproof. =(
get a waterproof cast...?
im a swimmer and someone in our club just has this glove type thing he slips on for swimming, maybe you could find something similar and put it on her during meal times and swim?
They have waterproof arm covers available. You could check with the companies to see if they would fit your child's arm. Speak to the doctor or nurses where she received the cast. They would probably be able to give you some information. Hope you find something that will help. It's not fun for you or your child.
Enter $50 drawing.
Just deal with it. if it gets wet it'll smell then febrezze it. haha jk (sort of). :) My brother and I had casts A LOT when we were younger due to our bone disease My mom use to tell us stories about how we'd get it wet all the time. It just happens with kids I guess. She gave up on freaking out by cast 3 I think. :) waterproof it! They didn't have waterproof when we were younger. Would have been useful haha.
seen ...
If you really believe she's doing something because you told her not to, then you need to implement consequences for her actions. Otherwise, you'll have absolutely no control except violence, and when she's a teenager bigger than you, SHE'LL be the one in control, precisely when you need control the most.
But yes, also get a waterproof cast.
So she rides horses, huh? Well, that's a good tangible example you can use for lots of things. Arguments you can use to justify taking good care of the cast include:
"This keeps your arm from hurting while you are riding, because if it was hurting your ride wouldn't be so much fun."
"Wouldn't you be sad if *favorite horse* was hurt? I bet (s)he's worried about you too, so let's try to get better quick so (s)he can stop worrying."
look into the waterproofing thing that everone else suggested.
I dont know if you have a childrens mercy where you live, but my daughter broker her arm just before she turned two and they made her a waterproof cast! I dont know how I would have done it without them!
Decorate it! Stickers, Color Markers, or even the squeezy paints (have a blow dryer handy for that). Let her know it's ok to sit down one time and make that darn cast a sort of celbration! Make it beautiful, paint her nails to match and tell her she has to talk care of her new braclet- not get it wet (Stick a matching sticker on a calendar and count down til when she get's to take it off) You could also explain it to her as the most beautiful bandaid and she can't ruin it or take it off till her boo boo is all fixed.
waterproof cast....my friend had one and it worked well.
you can't put her in time-out? you can't take her toys away? you can't forbid junk food or tv until she stops messing w/her cast?
