    inappropriate, you mean?

i was not really monitored for content as much as time spent watching television.
i don't know how it has affected me, though.

My mom was never around to monitor what we watched on television. However, she did tell us what we were allowed to watch, and what we weren't, and we followed her rules.

Her main "no-no" was the Three Stooges anyway. It seems they watched it as kids, and one day my mom used a toilet plunger on my younger uncle's bare back and picked him up and carried him around with it -- apparently an idea she got from the Stooges. So .... I've never really watched them. She made a point of bringing that up when I had a child also.

Even the times we had cable, my parents never felt the need to moniter anything.. TV.. or computer... I was one of those kids that would tell on myself if I did something bad... just because normally it was an accident if something bad popped up on the computer, or TV... I never cared for getting in trouble...

My parents monitored what I watched.  I was not allowed to watch any cartoons.  I was also not allowed to watch shows that were too old for me ie 90210, which drove me nuts because all my friends watched it.  I distinctly remember when I started watching friends I made sure to watch it at the other end of the house so she didn't know what it was about.  That tv didn't have cable so I was permitted to watch that alone.

My daughters are young, but I do monitor what they watch as well.  My oldest is almost three and tries to watch Spongebob, but I don't allow it.  There is one more show that I don't like the way the main characters act, (it's nothing bad, I just find the characters a bit bratty) so I try to encourage her to wait for Imagination Movers instead or distract her during that time.  They are allowed to watch cartoons, but only 1-2 shows  of total tv a day.  Their choice.

My parents didn't really monitor what I watched but I always chose things like Power Rangers and various cartoons, nothing ever completely inappropriate.

My parents were really careful about how much TIME we spent watching TV and of course, the content of what we were watching. My mom was really creative about it actually...

At the beginning of each week we each got five dollars in quarters. We were allowed one 30 minute show a day for free and after that, each 30 minutes was a quarter. We had a jar on top of the TV to put our quarters in. The only exception was if we watched a movie on family night or something like that, and we got two hours on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons. At the end of the week, whatever we hadn't spent on TV we got to keep, in addition to our regular allowance. We RARELY spent all of our quarters.

We weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons and now that I'm older, I totally understand why. Even as an adult I don't feel comfortable watching it. That's really it.....besides obvious stuff. We were happier being outside though. :)

I was not permitted to watch TV until about age seven or eight. And after that I was only able to watch about thirty minutes a day.

totally - of course while they were away, we'd try to sneek in a peek at the shows we weren't supposed to watch.  Movies too.  My siblings and I were the only ones that had never seen ET.  I only seen the fist time a couple years ago with my kids.  I don't get what the big deal was.  As a kid, I couldn't figure out why we weren't supposed to watch many of the shows that were forbidden - now as a parent myself, I know exactly why (with the exception of ET). I'm even more strict about what my kids watch and read then my mom was with us.

XxFireXboltX - That's a really clever idea, actually. I'll have to keep that one in mind!

My dad wasn't too picky about what I watched (so long as it didn't overly annoy him or anything), but my mother was a real stickler. She kept a very tight reign over what I watched pretty much until I went to college. No cartoons other than the old classics (i.e. Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse), and no prime-time t.v. unless it was something she and Dad would watch (despite the fact that we had two t.v.s for most of my childhood).

So basically I was stuck in the 70s with my parents. I rebelled a bit at 16 by picking up watching "Sailor Moon" (gasp!), which my mother admonished as childish. (if she only knew...then I would have been banned from watching it altogether XD)

  • mamajoyjoy

no, they didn't monitor what we watched. we didn't have cable either...never did and never will. actually we don't have a tv right now. just don't have time to watch it and lots of stuff available online anyhow. i think all parents should monitor now...too much garbage out there. i remember the first time i heard the word 'heck' in a commercial. *gasp* what's the world come to?

  • lovelyingenue@xanga

No, but they should have. My husband and I won't put a tv in our child's bedroom, we're going to limit tv/internet/video game time, and we're going to monitor the content of what is watched/surfed/played.

  • StepHyKu2517___v3v@xanga

No ...I always watch TV but they never monitor me ...

  • xiaosnowtenshi@xanga

The only thing they (my dad, really) wouldn't let me watch was Beavis and Butthead. Not that I wanted to anyway. Most days TV time was family time, so we'd watch action stuff or Chinese soap operas if my dad was away on a business trip. I only watched TV by myself on Saturday mornings, and that was dedicated to cartoons.

  • MangoWOW@xanga

They didn't monitor too much but I would guess it's because we never watched shows that weren't age appropriate. The only shows they had to turn us away from were Ren & Stimpy and Beavis & Butthead

  • joycemiles@xanga

My mom/dad would only let us watch tv if they knew what was on. I mean... we barely watched tv though. We were too busy playing outside:)

  • TodaysJourney

we were monited on time. usually 8-10 p.m. only....

except on weekends then it was morning cartoons.

not a whole lot of t.v. time allowed

  • Anderson_Mania@xanga

When I was about 5 or 6 I sat beside my parents while they watched Toxic Avenger... that is fuct up.  I asked my Mom about that recently and she responded "We didn't think you understood what was going on."  You're right Mom, I didn't understand why some lady ran over a boy riding his bike, then took a picture of his brain splatter THEN masturbated while looking at the picture.  Thanks Mom and Dad for that experience! *shudders*
I am way more cautious with my kids!  But not a Parent Control Nazi either.  They watch Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and .. that's about it.  They don't watch TV that often, I try to limit that, I don't want zombie children lol.

  • LisiliLostRedemption@xanga

of course my parents monitored what i watched when i was a child!
i dont think any child should be left alone with the tv.
we didnt watch that much anyway, we had better things to do as kids. i got to watch a movie a weekend, and maybe sesame street every once in a while. thats it. and i grew up just fine. ;)

  • Suesbooks

Not really.  We only had one tv and we were not home that much to watch tv.  Everyone worked and helped out with the family business and the farm. At night we were so tired that all we wanted to do was get some rest or we had to study and do homework.

  • disorderedpersonality@xanga

My mom did, my dad didn't. My sisters are younger than me, so some things I couldn't watch until after they went to bed, stuff like that.

  • Mangonese@xanga

They never monitored what I watched.

That being said, I watch many things rather conservative people would assume are hazardous to my well-being. I do stay away from South Park (usually. Some episodes are very good sociopolitical commentary) and a few other things, but that's just because it's not my sense of humor.

  • theOrientalist@xanga

All I could watch growing up was PBS.  College was different.  I let my daughter watch cartoons as long as it is age appropriate unlike her cousin who is allowed to watch anything.

  • nerdette_star@xanga

No not really. Just how long I would stay in front of the t.v, usually for no more than eight hours XD
That's why I have bad eyes now lol!

  • shes_lump@xanga

When I was a child, growing up in the good ol' 90s (with those awesome cartoons and TV shows).... I was allowed to watch whatever I wanted on Nickelodeon and PBS. I was not monitored by my parents because both my brother and I had televisions in our rooms. However, the technology of blocking certain shows and channels didn't exist then. I did watch some inappropriate things for my age--- COPS was a favorite of mine. Ren And Stimpy is disgusting... why was I allowed to watch that? haha. But nothing too horrible.
And when I turned 9, I thought I could watch MTV but my parents were adamant that I did not watch those channels. lol... I snuck in Daria every chance I could though.

Anyway, I think it must be nice for parents to have that channel blocking function though so they know their children aren't watching anything bad.
