I Approve of North Dakota's Smoking Ban
Last I read, North Dakota was planning to ban smoking public places. I have been in a smoke-filled home for ten years now and the thought of a government that would pass this kind of ban is great to someone like me, who has been sick from cigarette smoke, staying up all night with a child who has asthma and who keeps fighting and arguing everyday for a small breath of clean air.
I wish I had the funds and the ability to move to North Dakota. Because believe me, I would rather live away from my husband and his mother who are heavy smokers, just so my children would grow up healthy. I have asthma. Before it was seasonal, but because of the cigarette smoke at home and with my job, everyday is a struggle to breathe. I am constantly fighting to keep smoke away from my children, but to no avail. We are trapped.
What do you feel about banning smoking?

Personally I just wish they would outlaw cigarettes all together.
For you, I am really sorry you are having to deal with that. I would not tolerate that at all, I would rather live in a homeless shelter than put my family's, especially my children's, health at risk. Having their father and grandmother being that inconsiderate about something as huge as health, especially with asthma that could KILL them, is a deal breaker for me. My heart hurts for your family and I really hope you are able to get out of that soon.Â
It's banned in public places in Ohio, or at least my area of Ohio. I really, really like the ban.
My husband is a smoker and his dd and step-mom are heavy smokers, but no one smokes in our house out of respect for me and of course our 16 month old. My husbands dad and step-mom smoke in their own home, but when we come to visit theyair out the house and do not smoke in the house while we r there because of our son. I am really sorry that you have to live in a smoke filled house and hope somehow you can get out of it. And yes I do think the bas on smoking in public places r appropriate and wonderful.
Washington has a similar law in that you must be at least 25 feet from the entry of any public place. Within the last 6 months, they also put up signs at bus stops that you cannot smoke near them, either. I still run across people who have not noticed (or worse, don't care) about that. And people give me grief when I ask them to smoke elsewhere.
I'm actually very interested in a beautiful young woman who happens to smoke. But she's very considerate in that she will do her utmost to ensure her habit affects me as little as possible. Just like any other struggle or addiction, these things are not easily overcome...I just wish more smokers would stop abusing their freedom to abuse themselves by insisting others partake whether they like it or not.
I wish they'd ban in right in front of my grocery store. I hate having to walk through smoke just to get groceries!
I like the idea. I do not have anything against smokers, in fact I actually like the smell of cigarettes. But we all know that smoking is harmful to ours and everyone else around you's health, so I think out of respect to their well being smoking in public areas should be banned.
I see no problem with smoking in your house/on your lawn/porch and designated smoking areas.
It's banned in most places here in NE and in most places in IA. I really like the idea && hope it can continue nationwide.
The sooner that cigarettes are banned all together, the better.
This is already true in a lot of states. My favorite of all, is Massachusetts, where, I believe it's banned in public places as well as private places unless you have permission of the owner. New York and New Jersey do, as well as Philadelphia. I think it's great!
California has the ultimate ban, in your own home.
I live in Illinois and I love when they banned smoking in public places awhile back. It's great to be able to sit in a restaurant and enjoy my food without cigarette smoke wafting over in my direction.
yeah all of ohio has banned smoking in public places...its great.
when i went to florida, i hated it because people smoked everywhere i went and i CANT stand it..
Rather than a government taking away personal liberties, those who do smoke should learn personal responsibility (quite a concept in today's society) and respect those who do not smoke or who wish to be around smoke. By the same token, those who do not smoke should respect a smoker's right to smoke. I am an occasional smoker. If I choose to smoke in a public place, and some other person comes along and asks me to put it out, I will respectfully refuse, if I was there first. If he or she does not like the smoke, he or she can go sit somewhere else. Mutual respect and understanding is the way to go, in my opinion.
I live in North Dakota and there is no state-wide ban yet. In Fargo, smoking is banned in all indoor workplaces. Many other large cities may follow suit, but mine has not jumped on the bandwagon yet. I hope we do soon! If you are really looking for a smoke-free state, Minnesota is the place to move to, where they have a state-wide ban just like Fargo's. We are lucky enough to live on a border community, so we have the choice of going to restaurants and bars on the Minnesota side that are nonsmoking. In the midwest, this is a very hotly contested issue, as many people believe that as long is tobacco is legal, smoking it wherever you want should be, too. I disagree and hopefully it will go to a public vote soon so we can all breathe easier.
When I lived in Oregon there was a clean air law and the whole thing was you couldn't smoke in a public place or within 50ft of a public building. It was wonderful. I'm in Texas now and I'd wish they'd pass a clean air law here.
Smoking is banned everywhere nowadays. Personally, I think it's kind of stupid. I always thought smoking and non-smoking sections did the job just fine.
My mother passed away a little more than a month ago do to cigarette smoking. She was a smoker for 38 years. But I still have no problem with people smoking in designated areas. But now they're outlawing smoking in bars. That makes no sense whatsoever.
I am completely on board with banning smoking! I grew up in a smoke-filled home, and had a cat die of lung cancer, lost my grandmother to lung and stomach cancer, and had my own run in with cancer. Here in Chicago, smoking is banned in all public places. Now I can finally take my children to a bowling alley. And in our harsh winters, its funny when there are huddles of people outside trying to maintain their habit.
That having been said, I also do understand the struggle to kick an addiction. I watch my own family go through it... cigarettes have icy claws that grip the mind of a person. It is compulsion. But maybe by making it less convenient to smoke places, we can help encourage those people to give up the addiction.

I agree with a ban on smoking in public except in bars and clubs because in those places, lets be honest, you dont go there to be healthy so people should accept the health hazards before they go there. plus its much more fun being able a cigar inside a comfy bar than outside in the cold isnt it?
@NaitoOfNarnia@xanga - I live in Washington and have noticed that many people don't abide by the 25 ft rule. Cigarette smoke smells bad and gives me a headache so, really, 25 ft away or not, the wind carries the smoke and stinks.
I'm so grateful that I found someone who is 100% against smoking. Our home will always be smoke free. =)
@Sugarling@xanga - The lady I am interested in does smoke, but she's the sort who at least tries to be very considerate around those who don't. If that's all a smoker can offer, I am grateful. But yeah, those who don't even abide by the 25-foot rule tick me off. I'm glad you found non-smoker, though.
This is also a law in GA. Personally, I am a smoker and it offends me a little that I'm not allowed to smoke inside. I DO think that there should be seperate rooms for smokers, which is what is done in some places. The rooms are closed off and have a seperate ventilation systems. No-one outside of the smoking area is exposed to secondhand smoke.
WOW. you stay up at night struggling to breathe? wtf?? maybe thats not from ciggs....you might be dying. i hope they ban fat people in nj. i hate them. then maybe i can sleep at night.
Its banned in Ohio. Its nice to be able to eat in a restraunt without feeling like I'm suffocating, and thats saying something because I'm a smoker. You can't even smoke in bars and clubs. And you have to be so far away from the doors of most places or you can get finned.
I think you have bigger issues at home than just smoke.
