Country Considers Banning Weird Baby Names
According to this article, The Dominican Repulblic is mulling over whether or not to ban weird baby names. Here's an excerpt from the article:
The Dominican Republic is considering a ban on unusual monikers following an increase in the number of names based on car brands, intimate body parts and other things. The names range from the bizarre — "Dear Pineapple", "Iloveyou Lover" — to the commercial — "Mazda Altagracia" and "Toshiba Fidelina."
A judge with the Central Electoral Commission state that names which are confusing and do not indicate a baby's gender should be rejected. The commission will be considering this proposal some time this year.
Another judge, Aura Celeste Fernandez, says that officials should meet with parents and explain the consequences rather than banning names.
Do you think weird names should be banned?

Nope. Then Frank Zappa wouldn't have been able to name his children Moon Unit and Dweezle (Moon Unit is his daughter).
Hahaha. Oh my goodness. I can totally understand WHY they want those types of names banned. But they shouldn't just make it a generalization of "weird" names. It should be more specific.
Anyway, what am I talking about? People should be able to name their kids whatever they want to.
Although "dear pineapple" and "iloveyou lover" should be banned.
i don't think so despite how weird those names sound. however i do believe they should do what judge fernandez suggested and talk about the consequence of those names. kids in school could make fun of them, it was hard for me having an asian name in elementary
Yes, actually. I think a baby name should have to go to a committee if it's not on an approved list already. The committee could then decide the appropriateness or lack thereof of the name. Then parents couldn't name their kids such outrageous things.
That is so stupid. I think people should choose whatever name they want. But not names based on material things, sex, or other stupid stuff. And not all people want a English name (which we are told are the only "normal" names), in this eurocentric world. Although, I do have an English first, middle, and last name.
Well.. Names should really be the parents'/ family members' choices right? But there are really odd baby names, ie those celebs.. 8-).. Feel bad for them when they grow up, being teased on and all.
No, people should be able to name their kids whatever they want. And in a global society, it would be pretty difficult to start banning certain names. "Mazda" might be a car, but it's also the name of a deity.
Maybe if they started taxing really dumb names (like "Apple" or "Moxie Crimefighter" or "@"), people wouldn't be so quick to want to appear clever at their child's expense.
They should only ban offensive or inappropriate names. And then talk to parents who are considering weird baby names... like 'Dear Pineapple'.
If they are going to ban those names because they "are confusing and do not indicate a baby's gender", then they need to ban names like:
Alex
Chris
Drew
Aaron
Amy/Ami (pronounced differently, but can be spelled either way: A-Me, Ah-Me.)
etc.
Well, the problem is, they can't exactly do that. There are certain names that sound foolish in one language, but make perfect sense in another. Some names are of mythological things, therefore the names have merit, but because they sound odd they could end up banned.
I think names like "Iloveyou Shrimpifer" should be banned, definitely. Those kinds of names along with names that include numbers and all of that other ridiculous crap. There's a high chance that the kid wouldn't appreciate that name later on.
I've met people named Rock, Sterling, Stone, Lake, Dawn, Rose, Olerike, Godrund, Dearbhal (rhymes with gerbil), and Toshinori, to name a few. --And here are a few common ones I've run into used by both males and females: Andrea, Leslie, Kimberly. I've even met a woman named Scott. If I wanted to name a baby Jerusha Tseykva or Sweetwater Gertrude, that should be entirely up to me. Though I suppose the father should have input.
I like the "Moxie Crimefighter".
Some people should be required a license to have children!! -- those are probably the same ones giving traumatic names to their kids. But a baby licensing police will probably never happen.
The infringement upon a parent's 'freedom' and 'rights' in regarding to naming seems difficult to regulate -- even if it is a good idea. Perhaps such parents should be sent a warning and be educated on what that name could mean for the child before the name becomes official.
@TheSpaceBass@xanga - My maternal great grandfather was named Echo Byron Gray, and I think it's a kickass name. My grandfather was named Marvin Echo Gray. If my sister or I have a daughter, we might name her Echo to keep it in the family.
I think "Echo-Gecko" is actually kind of a cute nickname, sort of like Lucy-Goosey or Hannah-Banana.
I think you should only name your children a name that you would choose for yourself.
Just think how you would feel when you're walking around town and someone says "I love you" to someone and you think they are saying your name. Awkward.
I mean my name is Amanda, a fairly common name, but i got made fun of in school.
"you're A Man DUH!!"
Ha, if you wanna name your kids Wingspan and Banjo, that's your prerogative. Dumb names like that are the spice of life! People should just keep in mind how badly that kid will be treated for having that name.
@madna@xanga - lol I got the UH MAN DUH thing a lot too! People also used to sing The Amanda Show theme song to me over and over and over again. lol kids are sooo meeeaan!
Seriously would anyone want to be called "Talulah does the Hulla" or "Sexseed"? Now I have to admitt that should I spawn I would like unusual names like Celestial or Jovian. But these are actual names, not phrases or punctuation or crappy cars. Banning them though? I don't know, almost seems like giving the government too much power, and then you come up with jewels like these. Foreign names are one thing, drug induced delusions are another.
YES! I am a strong opposer of weird baby names.
While I think it could suck to have a weird name, it could be cool too. I always wished I had one when I was little. Kris is a very common name, but it rhymes with piss so guess what I got called. Kids who want to taunt will taunt regardless of if the name is common or not and they'll tweak it however they need to to make it mean, even if it isn't logical.
Let's worry about teaching our kids to treat others with respect then we won't have to worry about the names other people choose for their kids. It's a parents right and that's how it should be. If it's a problem, the child can legally change their name at some point.
Think of how many common names were crazy at some point. Daisy, Rose, Lilly, Autumn, Summer, Hunter, Austin, and like a hundred others. You can't possibly fairly legislate it.
@methodElevated@xanga - I think the middle name "Amalthea" is more of an issue than Echo. I liked Echo but the middle name is just ridiculous.
Hahaha. That's funny. Those are particularly strange names, even though I had thought I already heard some weird ones.
i know this girl and her name is " Her Majesty Ford " her brother's name is " President Ford " and her sister's name " Ms ." i think think they should ban really off the wall names. it would be hard to determine what is off the wall and what's just unique, but yeah some names are just too crazy.
@Amanda__Joy@xanga - i think my fav has got to be Amanda Hug-n-Kiss
What's wrong with Apple? I think that it's a cute name. I don't think anyone has the right to ban names. That's a government overstepping some boundaries.
I do think people should really think about some of the names they pick. Some names may sound cute on a newborn but on an adult would be ridiculous.
I don't know about banning names...but I do like the idea of discussing the consequences with the parents.
