    I started bawling.

I couldn't imagine leaving my kids like that, it broke my heart in pieces for them when their daddy left for a year and I know how hard it was on him. I just couldn't do it but I am grateful and in awe of the courage of the women who do.

Wow, this is a powerful image. I was tearing up! I miss my kids terribly if I'm away for a week, so I can't even imagine the heartach of the parents in the military- especially the mothers.

  • someone_to_love_you@xanga

i was lucky when i was deployed to kuwait in '04 that i hadn't had my son, yet. you always think of the dads that have to leave their kids behind, but when you see the mom having to do the same thing, it makes it especially hard to think about!

God bless our men and women who are serving in iraq/afghanistan!!!

Wow. That's either the saddest photo I've ever seen, or the happiest.

I think that I'm glad I never enlisted.  And I hope my husband doesn't get deployed.  He would miss his daughter like crazy.

I think that I know I could never be in the military knowing that I'm a mother and my first responsibility is to home and my family, not to defend my country.

  • phuck_diz_shiz@xanga

looking at it made my eyes water
I could never leave my child like that

  • saraxqt@xanga

It's heartbreaking just imagining what they go through. My husband is now deployed, he will be coming home soon though. it's been a YEAR! our daughter is about to be 16months now.

People say they can't leave their child like that but you dont understand the military world. it's their duty to serve, thas what they signed up for. it is THEY who protect us, let's us have our freedom.

My step dad was a Marine and my husband was a Sailor for 13 years.  The overwhelming majority of men in my family have served and most served during war time.  I appreciate all they did for me (and the other countries that benefit from American service members).

That said...I couldn't do it.  It was hard enough being a military daughter and wife.  My husband says time and time again that it was very hard to deploy but we both agree that when it comes to me...I couldn't do it, not for anything in the world.

I could never be in the army.  I personally don't believe women have any business in the army anway as they aren't physically capable of protecting themselves (face it ladies we know we are the weaker sex in terms of body strength so why try to deny this fact).  I believe my job is to look after my children and husband and home, not going out and fighting for my country (especially when my country has done horrible things to other countries throughout its existence).

  • mcallima@xanga

It makes me grateful that there are men and women who make INCREDIBLY HUGE sacrifces for MY freedom. It's humbling.  THANK YOU!

  • sillylily0204

it brought tears to my eyes.  my husband is in the army and might get deployed overseas any day this year for at least 4 months.  we have 2 boys, 23mo and 6mo.  i can't imagine raising them without him but we have to take it a day at a time.  and i especially can't imagine leaving my children.

  • searchingfortreasures@xanga

You go, girl!!  And THANK YOU.

And sad for the child... but at least she is being taught that there are greater and bigger things to live for.

  • brownalpaca@xanga

Sad.  sorry but i dont agree that this young girl is being taught that there are greater and bigger things to live for.  A young child needs their mom.  (parent)  they do not at that age have the understanding or maturity to reason it that way.  For the rest of here life she will most likely feel a void that comes from feeling as if she wasnt imortant enough but mommy's job was.

  • strummingsam@xanga

She is a hero. The decision to serve her country is hers and hers alone, and she serves to protect the safety and freedom of our homeland. *applause*

  • junefreakincleaver@xanga

    I cried too, ladies.

My husband is in the army and I absolutely CANNOT imagine leaving our children for a year+ or worst of all, doing it over and over. I just absolutely cannot even begin to think about what that would be like.. this picture breaks my heart and fills my heart at the same time!

  • DreamFaerye@xanga

It makes me tear up. And reminds me of when I was young and my mama was wearing that same uniform.

  • DraconicCat@xanga

@muslimmom - I don't completely agree with you. If a woman proves to be just as physically capable as a man, why shouldn't she serve her country in the military? If you have that kind of mentality, let's just go back a few decades to when women weren't allowed to even attend college, let alone work outside of the home or attend primary school. If you're going to discriminate based on gender, why not go back to discriminating based on race or religion? T'chah. It's shameful to see women with that kind of attitude. Do you know the hell previous generations of women went through to prove that we are not all just mindless baby factories?

As for your comment about the horrible things our country has done to other countries, honey, it's a horrible terrifying evil world out there, and no country is innocent of wrong-doing to others. (Take a look at European history, take a look at the history of China, take a look at what the shattered countries in Africa are doing to themselves.) That doesn't make what our country has done in the past or the present alright, and is a reflection on the leaders we have chosen to make our choices for us, not a reflection on our men and women who have chosen to give their lives protecting us.

I think this picture shows the absolute love that mother has for her child, and the anguish she must have felt every moment of every day while she was away, protecting her child from the rest of the world.

Cried. Just like the hero in the picture is.

All the men and women that fight for our country are hero's. This picture shows the amount of love that she has for her child; and also the huge thing(s) that she gave up defending our freedom.
