  • Natural Labor Induction - Have You Tried It?

    Mama Monkey by Mama Monkey

I am in the home stretch of this pregnancy now - the last couple of weeks before the anticipated due date for baby boy #4. It is the phase where you become more and more uncomfortable every week. Your body starts to adjust to the lack of sleep that you will be getting after baby comes, as you are often too uncomfortable to sleep much. (And when you do finally fall asleep, you are awoken by the sudden urge to use the bathroom.)

I am more uncomfortable with this pregnancy than I have been with the previous 3 and am very ready to be done being pregnant and meet our new baby boy. To add to my sense of urgency, some 'complications' arose and I needed to have another ultrasound done a week ago. Turns out baby and everything is fine and things were just thrown off because I was sick and retaining excess water. However, the ultrasound revealed that - at 37 weeks according to my due date - the baby was already 7 1/2 pounds. If you go with the estimate that babies at this point gain about 1/2 pound a week, we are talking about a 9 pound baby (and my other 3 were actually about a week late.) Plus, all of his head measurements actually measured at about 40 weeks meaning there is a big head in there for me to push out. So, as you can imagine, I (like many other pregnant women) am getting anxious for this baby to arrive. This has caused me to google 'natural labor induction' many times in the past week.

Keep in mind here that I am not a fan of medical induction where the baby is forced to come out, ready or not. Natural induction - or, what some midwives call labor suggestion - uses methods that can help encourage labor to start or contractions to intesify but will not cause you to go into labor if your body is not ready. These methods (may) only help you go into labor a bit earlier than you would have on your own. None of them are guaranteed to start labor.

There are many methods (if you can really call them that) of natural labor induction - some a bit more 'adventurous' than others.

There are many different herbs that you can try that are believe to either stimulate the uterus or ripen the cervix. Some of these include black and blue cohosh, borage oil, evening primrose oil, goldenseal, mugwort and yarrow. These seem to actually be among the most controversial of the natural labor induction methods as some believe that they are just as dangerous as natural labor induction - especially if used without the supervision of an OB or midwife.

Nipple stimulation if one that, at first, may sound fun. But if you really look into what is suggested for this method - and take into consideration the sensitivity of a woman's breasts during pregnancy - really isn't all that fun. For this method, a large amount of nipple stimulation is suggested. It involves rolling your nipple between two fingers. Some sources say to do this on one nipple until a contraction starts, then stop with that nipple until the contraction stops and move to the other nipple. Other places talk about stimulating each nipple for 15 minutes each - alternating for an hour or more - until you start having regular contractions. No matter what source you look at, we are not talking about a small amount of stimulation here ladies and your nipples can get sore. (Though, it may be good preparation for the rigors your nipples will go through for breastfeeding.)

Sex is another method that is often joked about. The thought behind this is that there are prostaglandins in semen that help ripen your cervix and that an orgasm produces oxytocin, the hormone that causes contractions. So, if you are comfortable enough to take a romp in the sack, it won't hurt anything and may help to start labor.

Another, slightly less enjoyable, method is to take castor oil. Castor oil is a very thick, not very tasty oil that is often used for constipation. Basically, it causes you to have diarrhea and the cramps involved with the diarrhea can cause 'sympathetic' cramping of the uterine muscles. There are many different recommendations as to how to take the castor oil and how much, but know that it will probably mean spending a few hours (at least) on the toilet. Two of the concerns with this method are dehydration and the possibility of the castor oil passing to the baby and causing the baby to release meconium (though MOST professionals say there is not a link).

There are also said to be pressure spots on a woman that can cause the uterus to contract - though you would of course need to know where these are and how to apply pressure to them to have any success with this method.

Walking, squats and some other exercises are also said to help start labor as they can help to open the pelvis and encourage baby to move down further into the pelvis.

One that seems to be in the middle between natural and medical is stripping of the membranes. Yes, it needs to be done by a doctor or midwife, but does not use anything unnatural - such as drugs. This involves your doctor loosening the amniotic sack from the area around the cervix via a pelvic exam. Some report that this can be very painful, while others say it is only slightly less comfortable than a normal pelvic exam and the discomfort is short lived. The main danger with this is that the bag of water can be accidentally punctured which can lead to needing to medically induce labor to get baby out if you don't go into labor within a certain time frame after the bag of water has broken.

Like I said, none of these methods are guaranteed to start your labor and many of them are debated as to whether or not they have any effect. I have tried a few of them with this pregnancy and have not had any success yet. However, I tried castor oil with my second pregnancy and had my baby the next day - could just be coincidence though. It is best to talk to your OB/midwife before trying any of these methods. But if you are getting impatient towards the end of your pregnancy, most of these are not going to hurt - though there is also no promise of them helping.

What do you think about natural labor induction methods? Have you tried any of them - successfully or not?

We had sex yesterday trying to get baby boy to come --- I immediately started contracting and I had "false" labor for 13.5 hours!!! Today I'm spotting and cramping  --- I don't know if the sex started something but man.....I am feeling it!  (I'm 38 weeks and 1 day)

I've been walking and doing lots of squats.

I have a couple of friends who suggested fresh pineapple --- I have no clue why.

I'm doing hypnobirthing and a long with nipple stimulation they also suggest clitoral stimulation --- haven't tried that either but I could see it leading to an orgasm and helping move things along!

I'll take caster oil as a last resort.....it sounds nasty.

My other method is lots of prayer --- my biggest prayer is that I won't have to be induced and baby can just come on his own time. Prayer is such a comfort to me right now.

Good luck getting baby boy here!!!

I really dont see te point in them. they are not even 100% so i wouldnt even bother. i see it like this. my baby will come when she is ready (not pregnant now but when i was my thoughts was that) and nothing is going to make a baby come well except for a doctor stripping my membrains but thats it. all those nasty oils i think are a waste of time and disgusting. and i dont believe they work. with my first child my midwife stripped my membranes and i had my daughter the next week. my second and third came on there own without even having to do anything.

I tried just about everything; acupuncture, red raspberry leaf tea, black and blue cohosh, evening primrose oil, sex, lots of walking, I had my membranes stripped 4 or 5 times.. and none of it worked.  I still went 13 days over.  However, I was dilated to 3 cm when I went in to the hospital to have cervadil put on my cervix so maybe it did something after all (with baby 1 I went 9 days over and never dilated at all).  The cervadil did nothing and my doctor broke my water and thankfull I went in to labor on my own shortly after that.

This was all under the direction of my midwives and I wouldn't have done it otherwise.  I completely understand your frustration and fears of a large baby.  Both of mine were 10 pounds born vaginally and it went ok for me.  But it scares me to have a baby any bigger than that which is why I went through all that I did to try to have labor start naturally a little sooner.

My friend's sister had to be induced because of her blood pressure or something.
She ended up having one of the ugliest babies. But I blame that on the father, not the early birth.

Keep in mind that ultrasounds only give an estimate, plus or minus a pound.  And the deeper the baby is in your pelvis the more inaccurate the head measurements become.

I walked and did squats starting at 37 weeks and I had both of my boys before my due date, 6 and 3 days before.

I've always heard good old fasion sex works best

You'd better hurry though. 9 lbs is a HUGE baby!

  • Riftsong@xanga

I did black and blue cohosh and red raspberry tea my last month as labor preparation/suggestion.  My labor went well.  My water broke after sex, so that was probably the final straw.

A friend did the castor oil thing.  She took a whole lot though.  She said the labor was awful, but it only took 4 hours to have the baby.

  • KimisBarbie@xanga

    sex worked for me. lol

i started having contractions about 4 hours afterwards, and had my son about 20 hrs after that.

i really think that helped speed up the process.

  • averyswife@xanga

Sex always gave me strong contractions, but they always stopped after 4 to 8 hours.  It did help me dilate though.  My doctor stripped my membranes at my 39 week appointment and I went into labor 3 days later and had my baby boy on my due date.

  • mikenpeg@xanga

My midwife stripped my membranes after I was 9 days overdue. I had slight cramping, but nothing serious. I had been trying various methods- all of the above!- to no avail. She then had me take castor oil three times the next morning, and within two and a half hours of the first dose, I was in labor. I definitely attribute it to the castor oil, although my midwife warns that it rarely works unless you are partly effaced and dilated at least 2 cm. She calls it the extra "push" to get overdue moms started, and does not recommend trying to have an early baby with it.
Note: castor oil often causes harder, faster labor, which was fine by me. I went from no labor at all to contractions starting at 5 minutes apart, and after several hours, 3-4 minutes. I had a 12 hour labor, and when contractions are coming right on top of each other for several hours, you can't sustain that kind of strength for long. Luckily, it wasn't terribly long for me.... and I would definitely try it again if I go overdue.

Oh heavens.  I tried a bunch of stuff at the end of my last pregnancy.  Once 40 weeks rolled around, then 41 weeks, I was ready to be done.
    Did eggplant parmesan.
Did nipple stimulation - kept getting clogged ducts because my 2yo was sorta weaning at the time, so I'd be hanging out there pumping or attempting to nurse for 20-40 minutes at a time.
    DTD once or twice.
Did castor oil once - sucked down the whole 4oz bottle that tastes like lipstick.
Had been taking an herbal supplement with RRL in it for weeks to help "prime" the uterus (my midwife recommends it for her clients).
Gardened for hours - I was planting over 100 asparagus crowns (i.e. lots of huge, deep holes) at 41+ weeks pregnant.
Went for walks with my older two kids.
I got up to 4-5 hours of contractions from various things, but they always petered out.

Midwife stripped my membranes and applied black currant oil to the cervix at 41w6d when I was close to losing my grip on reality, and sent me home with black and blue cohosh tinctures to start in the afternoon.  Contractions started at 3pm, 9lb kiddo was out at 4:36pm.  So who really knows what was going on in there - whether kiddo was truly ready (she had the vernix of a 38-weeker at almost 42 weeks!) or it was mind over matter on my behalf.

And honestly?  My 9lb11oz kiddo and 9lb kiddo were easier to deliver (both homebirths!) with *way* fewer interventions/complications than my 7lb15oz kiddo that was born in a hospital.

I have never been pregnant so may not be entitled to an opinion but I think I would like to let things happen in their own sweet time unless the baby is in danger....

as i have not had this experience personally yet.. i cannot have much of an opinion.
But a good friend of mine was two weeks past her due date and her midwife sent her dancing. Her and her hubby went to a country club, took a dance lesson, and halfway through the first actual song her water broke, he rushed her home to the waiting midwife, and 20 minutes later their 10lb boy was there.
The 2nd time they were having twins and at one week over her date hubby was giving her a foot massage, and bam, started her labor.
Reading this post and the replies has scared the living daylights out of me. As much as I am excited about pregnancy and babies, I don't like the idea of labor.

  • ohritz@xanga

Walking did it for me.  I was 37 weeks pregnant with an induction set for 39 weeks (due to health issues).  I walked both Wal-Mart and Babies R Us.  I got home and got ready to do my shot and my water broke when I went to the bathroom.  Baby boy was born the next morning.

  • Our_New_Beginning@xanga

With my last baby, I got a prenatal massage, drank lots of raspberry tea, got my membranes stripped, ate the pregnancy pizza, and more pizza, and NOTHING.  Your body really won't do anything it's not ready to do regardless of how much you try.  Try washing a car though, my friend swears by it!

  • domestic_diva@xanga

We did the sex thing once we passed 40 weeks.  Didn't work.  We had to do a c-section when the little man decided not to come out after 42.5 weeks.  Doesn't mean we didn't have fun trying!

  • KadeshBarcan@xanga

I had a very successful experience with castor oil. I was over my due date and hated the idea of my husband cancelling an extremely important business trip 5 days later (He'd already been home over a month for the end of pregnancy/ waiting for baby, but I wanted to be at least several days past the birth before he left).

I had  been walking like crazy (5 miles, once) and lovemaking nearly everday, and was starting to get desperate! My midwife stripped the membranes in the morning. By evening that seemed to have no effect, so I took one small dose of castor oil, and that pushed me right into labor. It wasn't that unpleasant, in fact, the castor oil part was nothing compared to labor! Having my bowels emptied by the time I was in labor was not bad, and my labor seemed no different due to the castor oil. It was a long gently labor. I would definitely do castor oil again, if needed.

  • mmaaaaa@xanga

None of it works, baby will only come out when he is ready. But do enjoy some hot curry and sex as you wont be having either for a long while if your weight concious and are having a natural delivery. LOL and good look with your new bundle of joy congratulations

  • MadelynsMirror@xanga

We tried sex, nipple stimulation, and walking ~ I was afraid to take castor oil or herbs ~ and only had horrible Braxton-Hicks.  I had to be induced, had a HORRIBLE labor...and now we're planning to get pregnant & do it all over again next month!  I had polyhydramniosis and my daughter was just floating around in there.  lol, it was awful but I'd do it a million times over.

@XxFireXboltxX@xanga - castor oil is NOT a good way to go... it causes diareah and uncomfortable cramping from gas pain...  diareah can also lead to dehydration which is not good while exerting energy from labor... it may also cause the baby to have a bowel movment in the womb... the muconiun is dangerous to your baby if swallowed or inhaled

I have been married to Papa Monkey (25 year old computer programmer) for 8 years and we have known each other for 10. We started our family life a bit early, but I wouldn't change it for the world. I am a bit of a cleaning and organizing freak and am always looking for new ideas on how to keep things around here organized and unchaotic - as you can imagine, that is not the easiest with 3 rowdy boys. I love to write as it has always been one of the best ways for me to get the myriad of thoughts racing through my head out. I hope you enjoy my little writings, are able to identify and even, at times, maybe get a bit of wisdom from them. I am so excited to have my writings shared with you all.
