Laundry... It's Never Ending
by Mama Bee With a family of five, its a given. Laundry is up to my eyes if I don't do a load a day. If I let it build up, I'm really screwed. My family, every person, has enough clothes that I could go months without doing laundry and we could wear something clean every day.
The bad side to that is that when I do go a couple of weeks without washing, I spend days upon days doing load after load to catch up.
I found that after this last time, I will never let that happen. I did a load here and there in the last few weeks but nothing consistant. I didn't collect laundry baskets from the rooms or check out my laundry room. When I walked in after spring cleaning Monday, I was overwhelmed. I did 7 loads of laundry Monday, 8 Tuesday and so far today I've done 4 loads.
I still have 2 more loads to do though, mainly of the babies clothes... but still.
I put away 3 baskets full of my daughters clothes, 3 for my youngest son, 7 for my husband and me, and 2 for my oldest so far. What had me floored was when I went to put the laundry away, everyone still had plenty of clothes hanging up. I even had to search for more hangers.
Oh, and what upset me was as I was sorting the laundry I realized, my kids hadn't even worn some of the stuff I was washing. They lazily threw it in the hamper which added to my loads.
What really gets me is that I haven't even done summer clothes shopping nor do I need to. With my daddy working at Dillards, he and my mom always drop off clothes for the kids. I found myself hanging up clothes next to stuff that still had the tags on them.
I called my mom and told her to stop getting them so much and I put some of those clothes in the Goodwill bags. There is stuff we're giving away that the boys have only worn one time, that still fit and are name brands like Timberland or Quicksilver. I just couldn't justify keeping them with as much as they have.
I hope that someone in the garage sale or at Goodwill will love the great buy.
As I sit here, the dryer goes off and I will spend the rest of the day hanging up the rest of the clothes and doing the rest of the laundry. I'm tired and if I have to fold another pair of jeans, pair another pair of socks or iron another shirt, I'm going to scream.
Laundry is NEVER ENDING in my house.
What about yours? What do you do to keep up on it or when you get behind? Do your kids just throw clean clothes in the laundry because they are too lazy to hang them?

Haha My mom taught us girls how to do laundry when we were 12 and before then we only did it once a week. We're pretty good about keeping clean.
I actually like doing laundry. The only part I dislike it separating the piles. After that I love putting in the loads and putting clothes away.
Eeekkk! I totally understand where you're coming from!
There were 7 of us in my house growing up, and eventually my mom gave in and told us that she wasn't going to do it for us anymore. Either we washed our clothes ourselves or else we had nothing to wear.
I resisted for a little while, but when the day came that my school uniform smelled like I had worked out in it, I was really embarrassed and started washing clothes that instant.
Good luck with the laundry! I have a house of my own now, and I'm having trouble just keeping up with myself and my fiancé (he doesn't have a washer).
I do one or two washes a day, theres 3 adults and 2 kids in my house. I was taught to do laundry as I grew up, there was 8 in my family, it used to get out of hand if my parents didn't keep up with it all. We used to take turns to fold, iron and put way clothes.
... I can fit all of my clothing AND my boyfriend's clothing in one, normal sized washer's, load. I can only imagine the luxury of having so many clothes to choose from every day.
Wow,even with two people I feel like we do a lot of laundry. Between work clothes (I have uniforms and my fiance changes when he gets home because he works in the lab all day) and clothes I wear to school or around the house I feel like I'm constantly doing laundry. If we let it pile up even a week it takes two days to get it all done, but we also share a laundry room (with 1 dryer and 2 washers) with 11 other apartments.
I do 2 loads of laundry about 3 days a week (me, my husband, a toddler, and a baby). If I don't do it for a week, I spend all day catching up too! So, I definitely understand where you're coming from. Most days, I don't mind doing laundry. It's kind of soothing. And my kids are too little to just put clothes in the hamper! Good luck!
Like you, we have a never ending supply of laundry. I look at it as a daily chore like making beds, doing dishes etc. When everyone is home I usually need to make sure that at least three loads get done a day. Generally I get plenty of help so I simply need to make sure everything keeps going along smoothly. I do most of the ironing. I find that limiting supplies of sheets, towels, and clothing actually will cut down on my laundry overload. I put one set of clean sheets for each bed in each room so there is always one set on the bed and one set in the drawer. Each room has a different color or style of sheets so we know what goes where. Each bathroom has four sets of towels, two handtowels, and two bathmats again arranging them by styles and colors so there is less confusion about where they go. I keep all extra linens in a linen cupboard. Each family member has only 10 pair of socks and underwear in their drawers. I use embroidery floss in different colors to mark clothing that is sometimes confused. I store the extra clothing items for emergency or to relace old or damaged clothing. We each have a dresser and closet or half a closet to store our clothes in and no one may have more than what will fit easily into their storage area. If they buy more clothes they must surrender an equal amount of old things to be put in storage or given away. If there are less clothes available then we are forced to do laundry more often thereby avoiding the pileup. Anyone who puts clean clothes into the dirty clothes hamper is put on laundry duty for an entire week. Wow that was long... I hope some of our tricks will work for you...
yeah when you have kids
Hi Jackie!
I just wanted to let you know that today is NATIONAL Childhood Stroke Awareness Day! :) Figured you'd want that info!
4 people here- two kids. I think it's a good idea to have less clothes and wash less. I wish i could train myself and my kids to somehow wear clothes more than once before they are washed but how do you figure out exactly how to do that? sounds easy but not so much. I do laundry every day- at least one load And i'm proud to say i line dry also throughout the year. I used to resent it and then i just got used to it... it's like brushing your teeth: wake up- do the laundry. before going to bed- do the laundry.
I have five kids and a military husband, so our house ALWAYS has laundry but unlike your I have to wash it all all the time, the kids only have 3 pairs of school pants so those are a must and my husband wear three different things everydy! A uniforwm , work out stuff and then at home stuff he wears his uniforms and at home h\jeans twice though so that helps but it is crazy I am always washing and drying and folding and always just doing so much stuff! You could always send some of your extra my way it would be appreciated :)
There are currently three of us, and I'm doing laundry every single day. I don't even know where it all comes from-and I'm pregnant and trying to find time to wash all the stuff for the baby-laundry really is a never ending job!
I do my own laundry mostly, and do a load every few days.
@CrazySwede@xanga - Thank you! That is so sweet you thought of me and told me. Thank you, Thank you!
