The Odd Socks Problem
I've twittered about odd socks. I've Facebooked about odd socks. I found a post on odd_Socks. And, now I'm blogging about odd socks. Odd socks are the bane of my existence. I should state at the outset that we have no shortage of socks in our house. I believe my children each have close to 50 pairs of socks. I'm not exaggerating at all. My Mother-in-law brings packs of socks over 5 or 6 times a year. The problem is not running out of socks it is keeping on top of the odd socks once washed.
I keep a plastic box on top of the washer and fill it with socks. Once a week I sit down and put the socks in pairs. I separate out the lights and the darks. I then further separate white socks from white socks with a pattern. I feel elated when I find the first pair. I'm on a roll now. The second and third pair -- I am on fire with sock folding. By the 10th pair I am wondering why I get so stressed about the socks. Then I hit the black sock with the brown toe, then a tiny white athletic socks, then a stripey sock. No matches found. I'm defeated. I plough on. I make a pile on unmatchable socks. I find more and more pairs until I am only left with the pile of odd socks. I go through the pile one more time. No luck. No matches. Just a pile of odd socks waiting for the next wash cycle to reveal a happy ending of a match for every odd sock. A girl can dream can't she!guest post from Musings from me
So, how do you manage your family's odd sock problem?

Make sock puppets out of them for the kids. Or wear them mismatched on especially cold days.
LOL!!! OMG, I remember having so many different kinds of odd socks when I was a kid. I used to make sock puppets out of them. What ended up happening as my sister and I got older, though, was we just bought white socks all the time. That way, if they mismatch, there's no way of knowing. YOU might not even be the wiser.
heh heh heh heeehhhhh....
buy new socks?
I've seriously given up on keeping John's socks matched...
especially now that he likes to open drawers and pick out his own clothes.
My odd socks end up being used for the dog: #1 as knotted-rope style toys, as buying a new rope once a week isn't feasible; and #2 as wound coverings so he doesn't totally undo whatever I may have tried to do to fix bleeding paws within the first thirty seconds.
My mom used to designate odd socks as gloves/mittens/rags when she knew we were going to get dirty, and my dad still keeps some for cleaning rags I bet. Not that he would admit it, of course.I like to think of them as extra socks! I just hang on to 'em. The match usually shows up in a couple of weeks if I toss them.
I try to buy matching socks for my kids, for example the ladies each got a set of pink, purple and white socks for Christmas. All the same size. I have twice the chance of finding a mate. All my husband's and my socks are the same brand and the same color too. So much easier, but not very creative.
I saw some girls socks at a store the other day...they come three to a pack and are called Miss Matched. They were all different! Just wear mismatched socks and pretend it's the cool thing to do!
You can also put them on your kids hands, spray some pledge and let them dust! Most little kids love to help clean and this is an easy thing for them to do.
I get so bothered about that too. It frustrates me to no end being extra careful to get everything out of the washer and dryer coming back from the laundromat, go to fold and put things away and there's almost always an odd sock or two! :( Grrrrr...
My wife and I got some new socks for our kids at Target today. She asked me if we should get the same kind that they already had, or a new kind that looked better. I picked the kind we already had. I can't stand when there are a million different types of socks to sort through. It's hard enough when they're all the same. Just buy the exact same style of socks all the time, and you won't have as much of a problem.
If a sock isn't found w/in a month here I make them into disposable rags cause if I don't they'll end up in the unmated sock bin again.
i wear mismatched socks myself. i'm not going to lie. sometimes i even justify it to myself using bizarre means of coordination: well, this sock has reindeer on it, and this sock has snowmen on it, so, by default, the winter theme makes them permissible to wear together. :D
We keep all our odd socks in a designated drawer. lol
Last year I threw away all my socks and went to the store and bought 5 packs of the same socks so every sock matched every other sock and I never have to roll them up into pairs because they all match.
All my kids get white athletic socks, but each kids gets a different style (with different color stitching on the toe or logo on the bottom). Then we don't even try to make matches, we just make a pile of each kid's socks, and they all go in their sock/underwear drawer.
btw, those socks in the pic are very cool!!
To keep them together, when you take them off, safety pin the socks together. Dont worry the pin is safe for the washer & dryer, just becareful after drying. If you take your clothes out right away, the pins may be hot.
My TCM teacher taught us to make rice socks. Just take a sock (an ideal one would be the odd sock!), fill it with UNCOOKED rice & sew it closed. You can heat it in the microwave & it's a heating pack. Not only is it cheaper than heating pads, it's SAFER! You can sleep with it on because the rice will cool & you wont get a burn or shock. And they last a while.
I simply wear them pretty much just like in the picture. It is sort of my own little fashion statement. My socks seldom match when I am just out casually running around. sometimes my shoes don't match either....
@mamadollface@xanga - That's good & fashionable justification! Thumbs up!
Each kid has a sock basket. All of their socks go into it and when they need them I spend the time to dig though it and find matches (hopefully). I need a new system... lol
I mostly buy "odd" socks for my little ones. One of many companies that sell them "odd" is Little Miss Matched. Looks really cute (on toddlers) and saves you trying to pair them all ! I love it !Â
Eventually I just throw them away. I make sure that none are hiding out in my son's closet or under the bed. Once I am certain that I have washed them all then I just throw out the odd ones.
That's such a good idea! I wear mine when noone will see them.
When my sister was in middle school she got so tired of folding laundry she just deliberately wore mismatched socks. It started a new fad! lol
Use them as cleaning rags, or throw them out.
Buy all the same color socks from now on and tell your mother-in-law to do the same. Then get a life! :) j/k
What I personally do is buy the same brand and style and if I lose one then I just match it with another no biggie. People sometimes laugh about my mismatched socks, but I just shake it off. I like to have them mismatched... maybe because of the different colors. :D
I have a big box with all my socks in it and grab 2 of them randomly each morning. I like a little chaos...
