It's About That Time for Easter Baskets!
Here we are, with roughly 3 ½ weeks left until Easter. Target has had their Easter displays up since before the end of Valentine's Day. Stuffed rabbits, colorful plastic eggs,l ittle toys, plastic grass and candy galore are spread out, waiting to be purchased for Easter morning. Then there are the pre-made Easter baskets, which, in my opinion, are way over priced and filled with tons of plastic junk (and even crappier candy!)
Last year was Jeremiah’s first Easter. He was 3 ½ months old, and I still made him a little (candy free!) basket. As a first time parent I just could not resist starting all of those fun child-holiday traditions. His first Easter basket contained 3 DVDs- Dumbo, Charlotte’s Web (the classic cartoon version) and the new Curious George DVD; The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and a stuffed bunny. The four other Easter baskets he received throughout the day from his doting grandparents and aunties contained everything from summer-y clothing to grow into, bottles, pacifiers, bubbles and sand toys.
Jeremiah will be 16 months this year for Easter and I have just finished his Easter basket shopping. His basket will contain the Pinnochio DVD (which, I admit, is mostly for me- it was a favorite of mine as a child!), a Little Tikes beach ball that hooks up to your sprinkler, a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse pop up book, a stuffed bunny, and, his all-time favorite snack, Goldfish!
When I was growing up, we always had a nice, homemade Easter basket with contents fairly equivalent to the Easter basket that I made for my son- fun things (plus lots of candy!), yet nothing overly expensive. Looking back, I believe my mom spent around $30-40 per basket for my brother and myself, which is around what I spent on Jeremiah. I have heard of parents spending way less and WAY more.
I am a member of CafeMom, an internet mommy forum much like Mommaroo, and one day Easter baskets were a hot topic of discussion- and several parents declared that they spend roughly 2-3 HUNDRED dollars per kid (or more- the most I saw was $700 per kid for ONE basket). Apparently the Easter bunny brings gift wrapped gaming systems to their house, video games galore, cell phones and laptops. In my opinion this is a bit extreme. I was raised where the two big “gift”days are your birthday and Christmas- but even then I NEVER received $700 worth of gifts from my parents at one shot. Some parents even spent roughly that amount for Valentine's Day! Goodness. No wonder children are becoming more and more materialistic nowadays. The focus of the reason for the actual holidays are taken away and replaced with the “gimme gimme” attitude of what they can milk from their mommies and daddies (or the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and… Cupid?)
If you celebrate Easter, do you buy your children Easter baskets, make one up yourself, or skip Easter baskets all together? What kinds of things go in the baskets? How much do you roughly spend per basket?

We don't celebrate it (we are not Christian) but my mom usually gets my boys something, the same as what she did when I was little. Just a basket (usually recycled every year) with some easter candy, like whopper eggs, reese's eggs, jelly beans, etc, a small stuffed rabbit and maybe a few small toys or a kite. I don't think she ever spent more then $30 total every year for me or my boys.
Logan will be almost 8 months old by the time Easter rolls around but I've gotten him a couple small stuffed animals and will get him some other non-candy stuff! He HAS to have a basket!!!
puke
@quiet_strength@revelife - puke???
last year we got John a stuffed animal. This year he found his basket so I had to hide it. He has jelly beans, crayons, and cars in it. If my parents buy something else then he will have something else.
Wow, I had no idea anyone put that much into easter. I always enjoyed getting baskets that my mom put together. They often contained my favorite candies. And I always enjoyed easter egg hunts. My husband grew up with Jelly Bean hunts (outside of eggs). Beyond candy and POSSIBLY a stuffed animal or other such small gift, the baskets contained nothing. I would like to do something for my son for easter this year. It's technically his second easter but last year he was less than a month old. Since he's really not old enough to eat candy or to even find it I probably wont' do anything though. When he's old enough I don't intend on spending any more than $10-15 total for all my kids (assuming I get more) and probably more like $5.
@MelodicPuppy@xanga - sorry. i just really don't like commercial holidays...
Last year I made my son a small easter basket. His favorite part?....Was the little plastic eggs I put in there with dollar bills for his piggy bank. This year his basket will be candy free again, aside from one row of peeps (come on, every kid needs a sugar rush now and then!). He's getting playdough, a couple books, sidewalk chalk, a stuffed elephant and a little figurine to play with. He's 26 months, fyi. I know he'll love all of the above since he pretty much picked everything out.
i wouldn't spend that much for easter baskets. maybe when i have a baby, it'll give me the excuse to buy easter egg dying kits again. so fun! =)
I spend more on my kids' Easter outfits for church than their baskets. I have some plastic eggs that I recycle every year and I'll fill them with some type of candy and hide them around the house. They will probably get some small type of toy or DVD or stuffed animal in their baskets Easter morning. Depending on if I can find anything I know they will really love that I feel is worth buying. Their birthdays are both coming up (one a week after Easter, one a month and a half later) so we don't do much for Easter.
It never occurred to me to celebrate Easter by giving extravagent gifts. I never got presents for Christ rising from the dead!! We did easter egg hunts, but that's about it. I think it's a little silly to give Easter gifts.
This year for Easter my son will be 16 months also (well a few days off).
For his Easter my son is getting the
Easter Carol Veggie Tale movie- 50 cents (Goodwill)
LarryBoy Race car toy - 79 cents (Goodwill)
Stuff Lion- $2.50 (Target)
A shirt that I won through Momaroo- FREE!
I might stick some candy in it also.
So my son's Easter basket totals= $3.79
@TinkerFly81@xanga - man i need to find a goodwill store around here! That basket sounds awesome. I got most of my son's things when shopping with my mom. She keeps throwing things in my basket that she thinks he will love and convinces me that i should get for him (this time it was the book and the ball)
Can anybody actually explain Easter baskets to me? I never got them growing up. We were pretty hardcore Christians, so I don't really know what all goes on in the non-religious part of most holiday traditions.
Does the Easter bunny leave the baskets? Does he do it at night when they're sleeping, like santa? Does he lay the eggs? Is the basket hidden too? Or is there actually no fun story behind it, and it's a meaningless way to give kids presents?
well maybe how I grew up was very differnt than most my age but we never had expensive things like $700 for Easter! Well we have 5 kids, this year wach got a color coordinated basket with each child getting the same items just different colors. Except the baby she got a pair of fun ears! well each basket cost litteraly 8 dollars and the ear were 1. they will love them and the way I see it (we are Catholic) is it is not really a time for bunnies but somehting else.
@plantingthings@xanga - In our house the Easter bunny brought baskets and hid them VERY WELL, we never found htem untill after church. supposedly he came when we wer esleeping and hid them and also hid plastic eggs with candy in them and the better we were the more eggs he hid
i used to celebrate easter at school when i was in the primary grades! it was so fun :) we'll have a teacher dress up as the easter bunny with a really big basket of large chocolates so we would go scavenger hunting to find strips of colourful paper and trade them in ^___^
It is better to get them something educational rather than give candy that they don't like anyway. So, feed their mind and not their bellies.
my mom just got us a candy bunny we could have after church and dinner. I don't get much for my kids since their birthdays are just the week before. Also I think the best part of the day is that we are together and dad doesn't have to got to work. I like to focus on the intangable things.
