  • Dora The Explorer Is All Grown Up

    Mama Ladybug by Mama Ladybug

It seems that the little "Dora" we once knew is forming into a "tweenaged" NYC native with a whole new wardrobe.

Yes, Dora is trading in her backpack and map for skirts, jewelry and make-up.

Although Mattel and Nickelodeon haven't released the new "makeover", they did send this silhouette :

    What do you think?

Ughhhh I hate it. They need to try to gain a new set of viewers not
grow up with the toddlers who first loved it. I think what they're
doing is ridiculous. What is there gonna be a high school Dora a few
years from now?! I think shows like that should stick with one age
    group.

  • MomWithoutaMinivan@xanga

I have read other blogs, ranting and raving about how Nick is sexed up Dora. This little silhouette has cause a bit of outcry, and I think it's stupid to rely on a cartoon character to be a role model for your girls.  Looks to me like a middle schooler with long hair and a cute outfit. Theres supposed to be some cool online interaction with her, like mysteries and things. For pete's sake, let's please take the focus off Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers and let them play with a toy that's going to make them think.

  • neverdie373@xanga

They did release a picture now, you can see it here.

It's too bad they couldn't leave well enough alone.  I thought Dora was cute the way she was, now it looks like they're trying to make her into one of those stupid Bratz dolls.  Way to go Mattel...

@neverdie373@xanga - Thanks for the link! It's not as bad as the silhouette seemed.

@vvaanneessuuhh@xanga - They're actually (smartly) whoring both markets. (See the link "neverdie" posted above; "Mattel and Nickelodeon both say there are two major misconceptions about the new Dora, which is not replacing the "Dora the Explorer" cartoon, but will be a new interactive doll aimed at the 5- to 8-year-old, or tween market.")

The new Dora looks like your average semi-fashion-consious 8-10 year old, IMO. A little "Bratz"-ish with eyes and the hair, but not slutty. They're a company in business to make money...and this is a great way to get more money from kids who have deemed "Dora the Explorer" as "too baby-ish" for their new "tween" identities, as a normal part of growing up.

@MomWithoutaMinivan@xanga - *chokes back the bile that rises into my throat everytime "Hannah Montana" is mentioned* Thankfully, "Hannah" is a real girl and ages in [semi-] real time. There has to be an end to it, right?? Hopefully before my 4 month old is of TV watching age. *crosses fingers*

  • irish_emerald21@xanga

From the picture that I did see via the link by neverdie373, they at least made her tasteful.  She is covered up and dressed nicely.  My only question is what happens now to the show that my 2 1/2 year old God Daughter watches?

  • MomWithoutaMinivan@xanga

@irish_emerald21@xanga - From the articles I have read, they aren't putting the axe on our beloved Dora the Explorer, they are just expanding the audience to kids who used to watch Dora but have now outgrown it.

  • MomWithoutaMinivan@xanga

@filtered_sunlight -  Don't get me started. I have a 7 year old girl who is obsessed with Hannah Montana. The thing with Hannah Montana is that one day she will be too old for Disney anymore and she'll be another Britney. I already see it happening with some of the questionable pics that I see of her on the web. Anyway, Miley poses a larger threat than a tasteful tween in terms of role models for our girls. Which...by the way...the picture or Dora? My 7 year old dresses like that, and theres nothing wrong with that.

  • filtered_sunlight

@MomWithoutaMinivan@xanga - Exactly...I highly doubt that Dora will have a MySpace with pictures of herself in her underwear on it.  ... The girls in the 7-10-ish age range in our neighborhood dress a lot like the new Dora and I don't see anything wrong with it, either.

OMG, we need to stop imposing our over-sexedness onto our kids. I can't believe how people assumed Dora had turned into a sex symbol because of that sillouette. We do have dirty minds!

The older Dora is cute and age appropriate. I'm glad Nick and Mattel decided not to drop older kids off in outerspace and allowed the kids to grow up with Dora still in their lives. Now where is Diego?

  • jessbeth1982@xanga

I think the new little girl is kinda cute.  The black image diesn't do justice but the color one I saw a couple days ago and on a link here is not something that a tween child wouldn't wear... and a lot of girl children are going to love that she's "growing" with them.

  • anonymous

Even more annoying than the original...

I just thought of this...  Why can't we have a tomboy type of rolemodel?  A girl who likes sports and the outdoors and isn't all about fashion, make-up and getting the attention of boys.  I'm sure however people will complain she's modeled after a lesbian or something though...  You just can't please everybody all the time.

  • WhenHateIsTheOnlyOption@xanga

The skirt is a little short and let's hope her face gets prettier considering she's an ugly doll.

  • macknbubsmomma@xanga

@neverdie373@xanga - I'd rather have my daughter play with a doll that looks like this dora rather then those skanky brats dolls

  • Luv2BMama@xanga

@sweetsorrows314@xanga - I agree!  After seeing the picture of the older Dora, she's a very tasteful cartoon character/doll.  Nothing like the Bratz dolls, which I swear, my daughter(s) will never play with.  Those dolls have way too much makeup and are dressed very slutty.

  • JJPrint3rd@xanga

all this crap is why my 18 month old does not watch tv. He watches Veggie Tales, and very select children's movies, and I plan on keeping it this way with all of our children.
I want my children to know what its like to play outside in all seasons, get muddy and sun tanned and covered in snow... I don't want my children to sit in front on the tv all day every day filling their brains with fake adventures when we can go outside and have real adventures of our own. I love how my son plays on his own, and has way too much energy to sit and watch even an half hour video.

  • jbomb86@xanga

NOOO!! dora needs to stay little ;(

my child will be so dissappointed.

  • fadingfllowers

I saw the actual picture of how teenage dora looks like.  She's pretty and innocent.  No harm at all and don't know what this whole big new about mothers being upset about it.  It's only a cartoon character and it's nice to see changes.

  • Erika_Steele@xanga

the cartoon is not going anywhere so why are people so freaked?  it's a new doll, and I think its cute.

  • anonymous

She's not wearing a skirt, she's not wearing make up, and the only new jewelry she's wearing is earrings. Her necklace and bracelet are the same as they've always been. And they're not changing the cartoon. They're just coming out with a doll of a 10 year old Dora.

  • xgreenxwingedxfaex@xanga

The new doll is kinda cute but tastefull since like it or not, 10-year-old girls do dress like that IRl nowadays. if their folks let them, that is.

I don't really like the fact that Dora is 'growning up' but if she has to then she has to I guess.

  • MomWithoutaMinivan@xanga

@JJPrint3rd@xanga - Who said every one of us was plopping our kids in front of the TV all day?

  • ordinary_gir1@xanga

    are.

    you

    serious?

thats the first thought that came into my mind

  • JJPrint3rd@xanga

@MomWithoutaMinivan@xanga - i'd like for you to point out where I said you did please.

  • a_single_raindrop@xanga

LOL seriously ... what's wrong with leaving Dora the way she is? There are always going to be new chidren who like the show.
