  • Video About Autism From a Parent's Point of View

    For those that don't know, we are the proud parents of Short Stack... who is on the "Autistic Spectrum Disorder".

    What is the spectrum?  To be more specific, what is Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

    I'll let you search what Autism is... and all the variations of what the "spectrum" entails. What this quick post is about is sharing a video, which I think, shares most of what a parent struggles with:

    • the emotions of dealing with the public, the doctors, the schools....
    • the emotions at times dealing with family also.

    As sometimes when someone shares about how well their kid does in baseball - your kid with ASD is in speech therapy.

    Play it often, rec'd it...share it (embed it) and let people know that it's the parents fighting for their children, by working with Schools/Government, family... to make their child's developement a normal one so their children will have a chance to live a productive life in society.

    There is hope, as awareness is on the rise and in some areas there's some major support.

    My heart goes out to all those parents with children that have special needs.

    Be blessed.

    Do you have a child with special needs or knows of someone that does?

    This video brought tears to my eyes as I recognized my son's early years and how no one would believe me when I said something wasn't right.  My husband refused to acknowledge there was anything wrong, but he wasn't with him every minute like I was.  He was gone a lot in the military.  Even the doctors wouldn't believe me.  As a result my son and I have had to deal with this ourselves and I can't tell you the frustration and anger I feel sometimes at not being able to get him the help he needs because ignorant people who think they know everything can't see the problem.  He is now thirteen and after finally having someone at school notice, and after having several discussions with them, my husband finally admits that maybe there is something not quite right.  We had him tested, but was very dissatisfied with the people and agency we worked with.  They didn't test him well in my opinion, they kept screwing up the information on the reports and couldn't seem to keep their information straight.  Now we're stuck in a place where it's hard to find any good help, and even if we did, he is now almost too old to start; it SHOULD have been done from the very beginning if only people would have believed me.  Now he shows almost every single sign and symptom of Asperger's Syndrome, and people STILL insist on treating him like everyone else.  He gets in trouble at school for things he didn't do or for things he doesn't know is wrong, he gets picked on, etc.. If anyone lives near Chattanooga, TN (I live about 28 miles from there) and knows of anyone who specializes in and works with Asperger kids; I would appreciate it so much if you could refer me to someone!!  The longer time goes by the more desperate I feel for both my son and myself!  Please help us find someone we can trust!!

    @homemadehappiness@xanga - check out autism.com, there's a listing of DAN doctors available by state through that site.

    There's also local chapters of TACA, they might be able to point you at other resources.

    Hope your search goes well...be blessed.

    Thanks also for ready my post.

    @mpwife2715@xanga - thank you.

    @edlives@xanga - Thanks, I'll check them out.  We've been homeschooling most of the time because of this, but next year he'll be going to the public school where my husband teaches and I want things to work this time.

    @homemadehappiness@xanga - Our DAN doctor has been a big help to us with short stacks care.  There are challenges, but it'll get better, hang in there.
