Seeing as I started the unplugged movement 'round here...

I can and have done it, once a week usually, and pretty soon will be enforcing another day every week.

I think we could do it.  We very rarely watch TV anyway.  The computer might be a little difficult, though.....

my psychology teacher wants to do something like this at my school but i don't think a lot of people would want to participate

we don't have cell  phones and our tv is in the basement .. But every Sunday is our "computer free day". Saturday night it gets shut off until Monday morning.. And i love it. We have done a week without computer and tv, and I did not miss them at all.

@mamafox - LOL, you know you are my inspiration.

that is awesome! I wish I could do that with my cousins and nieces and nephews. They turn into the biggest brats if they don't get their TV or computer.
I can love without a T or computer for a while. But I'm a huge texter. But I could take a day off if anything.

My last six months of college were like this: No phone access, no internet at my apartment, no TV (couldn't pick up any stations).

Now I'm having trouble turning the TV off.

Hahahah, we actually don't have television, video games or even the internet.  Cell phone is taking it too far since we don't have a land line.  Otherwise we're excellent without it

  • aliyagator@xanga

I think we could do this fairly easily.  We already don't use the TV or Computer on Sabbath.  Not using our phones would be easily enough since we don't talk much to start with - and mostly just to eachother when we do.

  • Begierde@xanga

OH, I couldn't !! I always have my cellular phone, my mum send me a lot of messages since I left home to study. About TV, no problems, I have no TV post ^^

We used to try those tv free weeklong challenges whenever they were proposed by our schools. In all seriousness, as long as there is enough to keep me occupied and my friends and family are close by, I don't need electronics at all. I used to work as a summer camp counselor and the first two summers working there our staff computer's internet was painfully slow to the point where people only used it in emergency situations or when trying to figure out college classes or something. I had recently lost my cell phone before one of these summers and didn't bother buying a new one. And television was out of the question and not missed at all, save the occasional weekend movie. My fifth and last summer, every staff member had a lap top to use during hours off it seemed, everybody had a cell phone, and the internet was up and running. Strangely, my first two summers were my favorite. We played a lot of board games, went swimming a lot, and of course spent a lot of time running around with children. Right now I have cable tv thanks to a roommate who demands it but I can't wait until we move and don't have cable and move the tv so it isn't the center of the living room again

I made it through when technology was still evolving in the late 90's when I was probably a kindergartner, but I tried it a few months ago and it did not work.  It sucks that I almost got through it, but gave up when it got too boring.

  • zosma@xanga

Well, my kids don't have video games and they only watch movies on Friday nights(or they can choose computer time but not both)....so that part's easy.  We don't have a land line so the cell phone gets a fair amount of use....I pop in and out all day on the PC.  It's a terrible habit for me and I can't break it.

  • happygirl7798@xanga

I could do it but I don't want too.  I like being plugged in.  I was forced to last summer when we moved.  We weren't able to have the cable set up to watch TV for 2 weeks and the internet didn't work for a week.  I didn't care for it too much but I missed the internet more than the TV.

    Congrats on surviving unplugged! :)

For me I am not sure going unplugged is an option right now.  I am in college and my teachers give us computer homework.  A good deal of my homework is posted on the internet now, and all my papers and such I have to type on the computer.  Considering I have some typed work due everyday, I don't think I will be unplugging my computer anytime soon.

But I have to say, no matter how much I love my computer, if I could, I don't think I would have any problem going "unplugged" for a day.  After spending all day staring at the computer screen, I am about ready to get away from the glare of screens.

Maybe I will take a break from working on my essay, and go "unplugged" for an hour with a book!

    • About Me: Hello everyone. I am Mama Pig. I am a very busy mom of eight children. Five by birth and three my marriage. While it is a busy life, it is one I wouldn't change for the world. Our oldest is 18 and will be graduating in May. We are even in the boys/girls department with four each. Two just turned 14, two just turned 12, one will be 10 this year, and the babies are 4 and 2. There are no twins in the mix, just step siblings that happen to be close in age. You will read alot about Down syndrome when you read my blog. Our youngest daughter was born with Down syndrome as well as a congenital heart defect. These are two issues I am extremely passionate about. I just resumed classes at the local community college. My goal is to someday reach law school with the hopes of focusing on family law.
