QOTD: Is It Possible to Get Rid of Stretch Marks?
Guest post submitted by a Momaroo reader
I have stretch marks on my body from years of losing and gaining weight (on my hips, breasts and belly). I was told by a mom that it's possible to rid of them by rubbing cocoa butter or other stretch mark creams. But another mom said those creams don't do anything, they're just a waste of money.
Do you think stretch marks can be removed by creams? If so do you have one you recommend?

I've heard the strivectin creams are pretty effective, also lotions that are loaded with Vitamin E.
I have almost no stretch marks that are visible after having two children and I used vitamin e oils and lotions.
they can go away but it takes good skin and time. good skin comes from good lotions with e aloe and cocoa butter.
mine never went away I think they tend to fade alot but once your skin is strected I dont think it goes back into place..I have had two children
I strongly believe in lotion and exercising. The creams won't work on their own, you have to be willing to help form your body back into shape!
It's all about genetics. If you mom has stretch marks you will too. I don't believe any gimmicks about getting rid of them. As your skin stretches, the elastic in it breaks down, it doesn't go back. After 3 children I have them but they have faded a lot, to the point of not being very noticeable. That's the most I can ask for.
I agree with Ohioladie@xanga. They fade as we get older but they never go away no matter what you use. When I was pregnant (all three times) I used belly creams, cocoa butter, whatever I could slather on there because the stretching made my belly itchy and uncomfortable. It didn't help prevent them and nothing I have used since takes them away.
A nurse I asked about this told me she and her colleagues refer to them as 'badges of honor'.
I've not had any sucess in getting rid of my stretch marks.
@ILoveOdie@xanga - "badges of honor" I love it! :) Be proud. those marks mean you're a mom! :D
I'm thinking it depends on how noticable they are. The darker they are, the harder it will be to go away quickly. I had stretch marks and they went away on their own.(They weren't bad, and they were on the side slightly to the back of my hips) I'd say give the butter/cream a try and hope for the best.
I have friend that used these products and worked... I'll try to get the names for it. She had only one child and she's a pretty tiny woman.
I didn't gain any new ones with pregnancy and I didn't do anything special...I've had some on my lower back/hips from my major 'life style' change (from working 60+ hours per week at jobs that I never sat down at to a desk job) for a while now...they've faded a little, but don't go away. I agree with Tammi; genetics are either your friend or foe.
They will fade eventually, but they will never completely go away. I had some awful red stretch marks on my breasts for most of my senior year in high school, but now a few years have passed and they are smaller and very light.
I agree with tornado chaser. I am lucky that I don't have them. They can be faded over time. Fade creams work as well as creams like strivectin. Other things that fade scars work as well.
Mine from my first pregnancy faded, but now I've kind of given up on getting rid of them. I have heard that cocoa butter works!
I'm pretty tiny. I still have stretch marks on my hips and in a few other places. They aren't terrible, and they have faded with time, but I don't hold out hope that they'll ever go away entirely.
I have heard that you can prevent them (for the most part) while faithfully using the oils and lotions during pregnancy but you can't completely get rid of them once they're there. I have had two kids and wasn't even kinda faithful about using the lotions, so I have stretch marks....but they are very faded.
Eh, what do I care? I don't plan to be wearing a bikini any time soon (as in, ever again) and my hubby doesn't even notice the stretch marks. :)
Stretch marks effin suck! I got them really bad on my hips after having my son back in 2005. But yehh I used cocoa butter religiously & it's really made the ones on my tummy disapear almost completely!
Have you heard of a derma roller? Try it!
i think neutrogena has a new strech mark/cellulite system on the market
i think once they are there you just have to wait for them to fade, use lotions and exercise. i have some i've had for a long time but they have faded a lot. i got mine in that pre-puberty chubby stage so many of us have.
also, Avon has a lotion that has shown to reduce their appearance in clinical studies. my grandma is an Avon lady...I just remembered about that product.
Nioxin has a product called "follicle booster" that is supposed to help with them. Â It rebuilds the cells. Â I've used it, and it seems to help.
it really just depends a LOT on your skin. Everybody is different! I cant see how my concave stretchmarks are magically going to grow back together with a cream, but i did get quite large with having twins, so maybe yours aren't that bad.
I've read articles about this. From what I've read, you can't remove stretchmarks with any cream because stretch marks are deep rooted scars. So it's laser. I have stretch marks too that I wanna get rid off. -sigh- Laser laser laser.
i have a cream that faded them but their not completely gone. that makes me a little bit happy about them.
it me agesssssssss to get rid of mine! i used coco butter, and now they have become silvery lines! i'm testing bio oil for a month (have new ones) i would let you know if its good!
Bio-oil is apparently pretty good for stretchmarks. I haven't tried them on stretchmarks but it worked very well on scars making them almost invisible.
