  • I’ve Got Mad Skillz!

I’ve Got Mad Skillz -Mama Skillz!

Yeah, I used a “z” instead of an “s” but it seemed appropriate. I'll flog myself later.

A few minutes ago I held my hand out for my daughter, and she removed her barrette from her mouth to place it in my hand. I set the barrette on the counter to later use during lunch time, and that’s when it hit me: I’ve got mad skillz!

I had only seen her out of the corner of my eye with a fleck of white barely sticking from her mouth. The thought hadn’t even quite registered yet that she has a barrette in her mouth when I held out my hand for the barrette.

I think these skills are learned when a person becomes a parent, especially if the person stays home with the children. There are a few babysitters and other caregivers that have some of these skills, but I believe they’re amplified for parents.

Since becoming a parent, I now have ninja-like reflexes. I can wipe dinner preparations off of my hands, get out of the kitchen, into the living, leap over toys on the floor, and get to my daughter before she falls hard from the chair. Skillz.

I can change a diaper while talking on the phone. I can even do so one handed. Skillz.

I can carry my toddler, 7 stuffed animals and dolls, 3 blankets, a book or two, and a sippy cup at the same time. Skillz.

I can put my daughter's socks on with one hand. I've had to do this but can't remember why. Skillz.

I can understand her toddler-talk. I should consider writing a decoder chart for her dad. I can tell the difference when she’s saying Mommy and when she wants a movie, even though they sound nearly the same. Skillz.

My hearing is amazing! I always had pretty good hearing, but now I can recognize all sorts of sounds. I know when she’s getting into the bathroom cabinets, trying to get the tube attachment thingy off the vacuum, opening her closet, trying to reprogram the computer while I’m washing dishes, attempting to snag some Cheerios, or opening the fridge (one of her newest tricks). Skillz.

I can type one handed while my daughter sits on my lap and while singing with her. Skillz.

Don't even get me started on the stuff I was able to do while nursing! Skillz.

I can carry a sleeping toddler while pushing a cart one handed for 45 minutes while getting groceries. This also means I get some guys looking and admiring my SuperMom powers. Skillz.
That’s all I can think of for now. Must get back to being Ninja-Mom. Skillz. That is so annoying. Why do people do people type it that way? Why did I type it that way?!

    I wonder if I'll have superpowers once I'm a mom :P

Am I the only one that noticed that once pregnancy starts kicking in then you have dog-smelling senses. I could smell everything. I would walk through a door and could smell if someone had something really disgusting for lunch.

The super dog smelling ability stuck with me. So now when I come home I ask my son "Where's the poop? I smell it." Connor goes looking for where our geriatric cat pooped today. She is so old and I refuse to put her down.

It also works to my advantage that when I can hear my son upstairs getting into something he shouldn't......sound travels. He doesn't realize this yet. So when I'm downstairs I can hear him upstairs and I of course advise him "Don't go in that closet." and then I hear "*sigh* how did she know again?" Then I can't help it "IT's because I can hear you allllllllll the wayyyyy down herrrre." Finally he gives up and comes downstairs to watch tv with me on the couch.

What a great kid. I am truly blessed. We are 24 days from the wedding and last night he and I just look at each other and he proceeds to flood me with compliments on how my eyes sparkles and what constellation my hair looks like and how beautiful I am. Then before he falls asleep I hear "Mom, you're my best girl." It doesn't get any better than that.

I am amazed at my ability to catch a falling pacifier, without even looking, before it ever hits the ground.  Before children, I couldn't catch a large ball, thrown directly at me, in slow motion.  :)

I can wipe my toddler's booty and fix my preschooler's hair(with separate hands!) all while nursing my infant. skilz.

@lilbit@xanga - Me too. My sense of smell has heightened as well.
@Luv2BMama@xanga - Me too! It's kinda funny how that happens. We should start our own sports team.
    @smittlefamily@xanga - Yowsa! Mad skillz!

Yes.  All parents have these skills and they are amazing!

I remember one time when we were out to dinner and my daughter knocked over a drink and I caught it mid-air while I was entertaining my son.  My husband just said, "I married Super Woman!"  haha

    Awesome!

I'm pretty good at stopping fights and grabbing hands before the hit connects. (I have 3 boys... it happens.) I also catch flying objects, catch cups the split second before they spill, snatch food from the toddler's hand just before the dog's tongue finds it.

I haven't had my daughter yet, so I will let you know of the newly-acquired skillz when they make an appearance.

    Bullseye!

Such a great post!  I too have developed super duper hearing when it concerns the kids.  I'll say to my husband, "quick the kids just opened the door to the attic!" and he's just like "huh? they did?"

    ...
    SKILLZ. Ahahaha, I love it.
I'm not even close to being a momma yet, but I hope I get some of these skills when I do have some pretty babies!
    I hope they're prettty...

@x_anchorsoflongisland@xanga - You will definitely acquire some of these, I'm sure.

haha, I loved this post. I actually think this to myself quite often!!!!!

took me a while to get around to reading it, but it was definitely worth it.  This was a really great post!

My greatest skill? - I snap my fingers and five little pairs of feet and a stroller are instantly put into suspended animation.  That's our signal to stop, no matter what.  A couple of weeks ago I did it in a parking lot just to show up the duck-waddling daddy of a toddler who was running across it.  The whole way, the dad was going "don't run, don't run, don't run" while scurrying, bent over after his son.  The kid just laughed at him.  I looked around (a bit smugly, I admit) to make sure my mom was watching (she went with us to the museum that day) and snapped.  Immediately, ten feet stopped and ten little eyes looked at me to see what I would tell them to do.  Skillz!!
