I Discovered My Secret Weapon -Insomnia
by Mama Giraffe
So in addition to having a house set up where all 3 kids sleep near each other, I have insomnia. In other words, I don't get much sleep. If I'm not awake on my own, then one of the kids is bound to be waking me up for one reason or another. This morning, the baby woke up at 2a.m. and after nursing him I could NOT fall back asleep. I lay there doing Sudoku for two hours (I'm in need of a good book - any suggestions?). Finally, at 4a.m. I just gave up and came downstairs. That's when I realized that insomnia is a mother of three's secret weapon!
Here's what I accomplished before 7a.m. today:
- emptied dishwasher
- folded a basket of laundry
- washed 2 more loads of laundry
- ate breakfast
- drank 2 cups of coffee and actually read the paper!
- tidied up the living room
- matched a bunch of random socks that have been strewn all over the house for some reason
- packed away the last remnants of Christmas decorations
- paid bills
This is truly amazing! I accomplished more today by 7:00 am than I usually do in a week! Thank you insomnia!
Does anyone else ever do this? Do you ever get insomnia?

Wow, that's an awesome 3 hours worth of stuff! Glad some of it was relaxing. TallGrass is a good book!Â
lol, yes i have had insomnia plenty of times before, and, like you, I cleaned my entire room, organized my closet, donated three full garbage bags of clothes, learned to play the guitar, painted a few pictures, cleaned the fish tank and parakeet cage... and, OH, the best part, when dawn breaks before the sunrise, it gets unusually silent the moment before night is officially over. It's indescribable, and probably something you experience for just yourself. enjoy!
Yes, I have chronic insomnia and have found that that's the only time that there's silence in this house...so I just lie there, meditate on scripture, pray and think through some problems that may need solving. I catch up on sleep over the weekend, but my kids are much older, so I'm lucky now that I can do that.
My one son had a cleft palate and is one of a twin. It took more than 2 hours to feed him when he was a baby. Just when he'd finished, his brother woke up! I hardly had any sleep for months! When I look back at those times, I can't understand how I got through it all. If I had to do that now, I'd probably keel over dead.
Grab 40 winks when you get a chance...
yes! this has SO happened to me numerous times, and you feel like you have accomplished sooo much until noon hits and you feel like it should be 4pm already ...
good books: The Twilight saga. There's 4 books. Its light fiction, you don't have to invest much energy to read it, but its entertaining and well-written. I like the books so far for late-night, can't-slep read. If I read things too intense, then my mind gets going and I'll never sleep!
great post!
Oddly enough, I get the most accomplished around my house when I am the most sleep deprived. Its like I am so tired that I don't even feel tired anymore. Kind of like being so cold that you don't feel cold any more. Like a numbness. So I just keep going and going. I do eventually crash though, after a few days. And that is some wonderful sleep- if the kids let me!
Haha, that's awesome! I do what you do... I do dishes, make breakfast/coffee, pay bills, fold laundry, put our son's toys away and tidy up the house. Sometimes insomnia is a good thing. LOL
LOL. YES! Usually I end up reading for a bit and if that doesn't do, well, there's always 100 things around the house that need to be done...
The Twilight series...I highly recommend it.
A bit more on Twilight. As far as great works of literature... no. A great story though? Absolutely. If you were an English major or enjoy classic literature just don't go into it expecting Stephenie Meyer (sp?) to be a good author, per se. But she's a fantastic storyteller. So I do recommend them as well.
And about the sleep, I keep reading in a bunch of different places that a sleep cycle takes 90 mins so you'll feel more rested if you sleep in increments of 1 1/2 hours. Sometimes I only get 3 hours of sleep at night and feel better than if I'd had 8. I think there's definitely something to it... so if your insomnia starts to wear on you, there's an idea, for when you can sleep. Also, I've found 1 1/2 hour naps are much more restful than 1 hour, 2 hours, etc. Waking up at that increment seems to get rid of the just-waking-up-feeling-like-you-got-hit-by-a-truck thing.
I get insomnia, but usually I just read and doze off (love the Godfather). You can go to the doctor to see if you have something that cause insomnia. You can also get Melatonin or Rozerem. Melatonin (over the counter drug) is the chemical your brain emits when you fall asleep, and Rozerem is a more concentrated, prescription form. Obviously though, you'd want to ask your doctor about it to make sure it doesn't collide with current prescriptions. I take Rozerem and it works amazingly =).
I hope that helped some? And if it didn't, maybe it was boring enough to help you fall asleep ;)
