  • Finally Ready to Talk About My Pregnancy

      Mama Elephant by Mama Elephant

I am pregnant.  I have mentioned it here and there in passing, but I don't think I have devoted an entire entry about it.  Having had two miscarriages not so far back and very close together, I was barely optimistic about this one.  I would say I have been holding my breath for the past 18 weeks.

After today's ultrasound, I am finally confident and excited enough to spill all the beans.

I will be 22 weeks along tomorrow. I keep really good records and I had to take ovulation tests, so the most I can be off by is 48 hours and the 3 ultrasounds I have had confirm my due date.  Somewhere around May 14th, my mom is going to be the happiest granny on the planet.  She is expecting another grand baby just 10 days prior to my own so she is getting a two for deal and couldn't be happier.

So far, all of my tests have shown a healthy baby.  There is a strong heart beat.  I do not have gestational diabetes.  My blood pressure is maintaining (I am borderline high).  I have refused an amniocentesis but my blood work showed a reduced risk of Down Syndrome and today's ultrasound showed a pronounced nasal bone reducing the risk a bit more.

Not that it would matter to me in the least.  I have waited too long to let a little thing like that get in my way of rejoicing and loving.  Junior was 8 years old by the time I had the nerve to try again and it took another five years to get this one.

Besides, my family is nearly full of children with special needs so what is one more?  You would think we are all inbred, especially since we are from the deep south, but I can assure you that our trees have branches.

Finally, for the sweetest news of all.  We are having a girl!  It isn't just me that is having a girl either.  My sister, the other woman contributing to my mom's over the moon joy, is expecting a girl as well.  Her daughter will be born with problems and while we are sad that she will face challenges in life, we are excited to have her.

My mom has already raided three Target stores to scoop up everything pink she can find.  For those expecting  and new moms out there, Target is having an outstanding clearance sale in their baby department right now.

    I am so excited!

    • About Me: Hi! I am Mama Elephant and I am both a full-time college student and SAHM to a mischievous 13 year old who happens to have Autism. It is a practice in time management. Raising a child with special needs presents challenges disguised as impossibilities as well as rewards beyond the imagination and I write about both. We are also expecting a new addition to our family in May and I look forward to reporting on the wonders of raising a little girl.
