  • Funny Moments Disciplining My Kids

    Guest post from BarryDadof3

    Funny Moments

A lot of times it feels like dads get the short end of the stick. As a dad our primary responsibility especially for little children is discipline.

Discipline is actually one of my least favorite but necessary parts of being a father. I feel like 90 percent of the time I'm in correction mode while the other 10 percent of the time I actually get to have fun with the children.

Don't get me wrong I know God gave me a purpose to raise my kids in His ways but there are times when I just wish I could  have less of it to do.

I've come to realize that I have had a lot of joy through discipline, well not the actual discipline part but the interrogation phase of it. I'll give a few examples maybe you will see what I mean....

Example 1: I walk into the children's bedroom because they were quiet and that's not right because they are supposed to be cleaning their room. As I walk in I notice that the amount of toys in their room are unusually small.

    Me: "Where are your toys?"
    S: (Looks at W)
    W: "Cleaned up" (giggle escapes)
Me: "S where are your toys?"
    S: (Looks at W) "Ask W."
Me: "W where are your toys?"
    W: "I clean up."
(W then proceeds to pick up a toy then opens the window and throws the toy out the window)

As I walk to the window I see half of my kids toys lying on the lawn outside the window.

W then looks at me and says “See I clean up.”

Example 2: I walk into the room because C has started crying.

    Me: "Whats going on?"
S:  "C is crying?" (I had already determined that)
Me: "Why are you crying C?"
C:  (Looks at me face in full pout mode)
Me: "S why is C crying?"
    S:  (shrugs)
Me: "W why is C crying?"
    W:  (Shrugs)
Me: "C why are you crying?"
    C:  (Continues to pout)
Me: "Did S or W hit you?"
    C:  (shakes head no)
Me: "Did S or W do something to you?"
    C:  (Points at W)
Me: (For time I thought I'd go to the source) "W what did you do?"
W:  (Stares at me in silence)
    Me: "What did you do?"
    W:  (Keeps Staring)
Me: "C what did W do?"
    C:  "Hug"
    Me: "W hugged you?"
    C:  "I don't want W to hug me."

I didn't know what to do, so this actually ends in a tickle fest for all.

Now here is a moment of fun from the mind of C (this is the last one I promise).

Example 3: C and I play a game we've played it ever since he could say the words.  It's kind of funny so here it goes...

    Me: (starts to tickle C)
C:  (Holds up one hand) "Stop sign."
Me: (I stop and then go in for more tickling with the other hand)
C:  (Holds up both hands) "Double stop sign."
(We both Giggle and then it starts all over)

Kids are so fun even in discipline. Do you have any funny stories of your kids or yourself as a kid being disciplined?

Oh man. Haha. My son is only two, so we are just getting started with discipline and everything. He is horrible with listening. I feel like an out-of-control mom when I walk into a bank or a store with my son and if his little hand escapes he is off. I try to call him and he turns around and smiles at me and seems to think of it as a game. I have to get a serious tone, which doesn't work half the time either. When I am at home with him, I feel like I am trying to be serious all the time with him and he never wants to listen. My husband told me the other day that I don't have to be so mean-sounding towards him, but if he only knew.

I am the one that does the disciplining around here, the husband does most of the playing -- which I don't mind.

I do. There was this one time my oldest D was about 2.  My mom inlaw, husband and I were visiting, and he did something really bad (don't remember what) Greg got up to swat his bottom, and a chase followed around the sectional.  SOOOO funny. Then Greg dropped to his knees behind the couch and D stopped and looked around, then got that shocked happy face like"wow it actually worked!!!"  Greg jumped up and D about freaked.  Then he got his spanking. My mil and I were laughing (quietly of course) so hard we were crying. Even my husband had to hide his face to laugh.  After, D looked at us and said "I know, it was really sad huh".

Ok, so one day, I put my 3 year old in time out.  I forget now, what for, but I was cooking supper, and I made him sit on the rug by the back door in the kitchen, so that I could see him.  Well, I turned on a burner on the stove, and there must have been something spilled on it, so it was a bit stinky.  My son then starts saying, "Ewww, the molecules are going in my nose, the molecules are going in my nose!!!"  I wanted to laugh so badly, but I had to wait until his time out was up to let him know I thought that was really funny.

My 5 y.o. is rarely oppositional and surprised my husband the other day with a bit of "attitude". I stepped in and told her not to talk to her daddy like that.  I told her she's not the one in charge here.  Dad said "That's right. Whose the boss around here?".  She paused for a second and questioningly said "Obama?"  I about peed my pants.

@Luv2BMama@xanga - Did he learn that from "Sid the Science Kid"?  We just watched an episode about smells and molecules the other day.

  • Luv2BMama@xanga

@PansyFaye@xanga - Yes, that's exactly where he learned about the molecules going in his nose.  :)  He absolutely LOVES that show.  And he gathers a lot of info from it.  Just the other morning, I woke up to him and his 2 year old brother talking.  And he told me, "I'm just teaching Logan was data is."  So, I asked him, "What is data?"  And he said, "You know, the stickers and pictures of food and stuff you put on charts."  I was flabbergasted, he's only 3 1/2!!

Those are some funny stories! Sorry, nothing to really share at the moment as my kids are only 1.5 and 2.5. Maybe in another year or so! LOL!

My mom and I were in our worst argument EVER once, and all of a sudden she started saying "What's the matter with you?!" in a perfect Italian accent.  I just cracked up laughing.

    Funny stories!

I think in our household, it's the opposite: daddy does a lot of fun things with our son (tickle fest being one of them), while mommy is the guardian of bed time and "eat your veggies..." Don't get me wrong, I do like to have fun with our son - we like to sing songs together, build block towers and topple them, and read books - but sometimes my husband is a naughty boy himself, it seems... So I end up being the one to control the messes.

Our son is starting to talk now (in two languages- my husband is German, and I am Dutch). Yesterday in the car, he cracked us up by producing his first grammatical sentence ever: "Mamma is gek!" (Mommy is silly!) I had to wipe tears of laughter from eyes so I could continue driving...

@PansyFaye@xanga - Obama... heeeeh! That was hilarious! And so true, too - what a smart kid

Too cute!  I have the hardest time disciplining when I am baby-sitting.  Kids are just too adorable and make me want to laugh.

I remember getting into my mother's makeup. She, of course, asked me to see if I'd own up to it.
    "I no touch it."
Then she informed me that God was sad if I lied. I walked to the end of the hallway and sort of whispered "sorry, God."

My father also had a video of me, after I colored all over myself with a black marker. I was about 15 months, I think.
"Oh no, what's mommy going to think when she sees her baby like this?"
    I grinned cheekily.
    "Won't mommy be mad?"
And I got the cutest pout on my face. A literal 'D:' face, you know? "Oh nooo. :("
