  • Last Day of Day Care: The 45-Minute Commute Is Too Much!

On December 23rd, Baby Whale celebrated Christmas with her classmates and teachers. We all had a sugar party -- there were cupcakes, cookies, and cake. Baby Whale enjoyed herself that day and was having a great time with her classmates whom she will greatly miss.

I'm kind of sad to take her out of school because she really bonded with her teachers and classmates really well. It has been a struggle for me to take her out every morning in the brutal cold weather to the city. Our commute is 45 minutes. I have searched around my area to see if there's a nearby day care center, but unfortunately, the train route is not close to the school. The only alternative is to drive her and drop her off, but as of right now, I'm still learning how to drive. Hopefully I'll get my driver's license soon so things will work out well for the both of us.

Anyway, I wish everyone a good New Year. May it bring you lots of joy, good health and prosperity.

Any suggestions? How far away is your child's day care from your house? Do you ever struggle with the commute to your child's school, or even with your schedule and their activities?

My son's daycare is about a 5 minute drive from my work - if that.  It's super close and really convenient.

But my daughter's school is a good 30 minute drive on the freeway.  Sometimes it's a pain, but it's school - she has to go to one. HAHA. :)  It's more the activities that makes it harder.  Fortunately, this year her gymnastics class is on the weekends and Girl Scout meetings are right after school.  We'd love to sign her up for more classes, like art or theater, but the time of day is too rough.  Late afternoon = bad traffic.  No thanks.  I already deal with that in the morning!

We're also lucky if we needed daycare/preschool, one is located just 5 miles from us. My sister is considering enrolling my niece there in their Pre-K program because she'll miss the kindergarden cutoff . Its a great Pre-K program, I was a teacher aide there till I was let go because of staff downsizing.

I forget how old Baby Whale is,but my honest suggestion is to see what activities you can do with her to give her the head start.  I was lucky in that we had a good mother's day out program close to home when P was younger but I still did things with him.  There are a number of great home pre-school programs out there, both paid for and free.

I would say to begin some fun learning activities at home, maybe inviting other mommies so you get the socialization factor going, until you get your license.  Then you can give the private school option another chance.

I work at home and can't afford daycare, so fortunately I only have my parents watch him. :)
