  • Baby Names: We Chose Ours Days After Birth

    Guest blog submitted by Bricker59

We had worked all day in my family's store and we were tired when we got home.

We were watching Saturday Night Live when she told me her water broke. I called the doctor, put her in the back seat and drove like a mad man all the way downtown to Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The nurses got her ready and I called my folks to tell them they were about to be grandparents again. My dad answered and I told him we were going into the delivery room right now. My dad is the type where if you ask him the score in a ball game he gives you a ten minute description of every scoring play, and if you ask him the time, he'll tell you why and how the Swiss make good watches.

"Well son," he said, "the human body is an amazing thing, the miracle of birth..."

"I don't have time, dad," I shouted, "We're having it RIGHT NOW!!!"

We went into the delivery room at 4:11am and I was holding my daughter in my hands by 4:23am. Hands down that Sea Hag pulverized while she worked at pushing the baby out. She did it with no epidural, no drugs, no rips, no snips... just courage and determination. I have to admit I was very proud of Sea Hag that day because she is a petite little thing, but she performed like she was born to give birth.

When mother and baby were sleeping peacefully, I left the hospital and drove to my folk's place. My dad was up and had made a pot of coffee. He hugged me and gave me a mug of black coffee as we sat down.

"Well son," he said kindly, "You'll never draw a worry free breath again".

And he was right. I worry about her friends, I worry about her falling, I worry about her future, I worry about her fitting in, I worry about her not fitting in, I worry about her schoolwork, her activities, her hair, her leg shaving. I worry about her laughing, her smile, her baby fat, her growing breasts, her not growing breasts, I worry about pierced ears.

I worry about everything regarding her. And it is the greatest feeling in the world. I love every minute of it.

When it came time to name her we had come to no conclusions. I was told that the name I liked (and which Sea Hag had agreed to) was no good. We left the hospital with our child unnamed. She stayed that way for three days as we went over every name again and again, but nothing seemed to click.

Then I said it aloud as I thumbed through the book of baby names and the baby turned her head and looked right at me. I looked up the meaning of the name and it was 'one who listens'. It clicked and it fit, and it still does. I said to Sea Hag, "Did you see that?" She nodded and said, "We have her name".

Her name wasn't so popular then but it has become more popular now.

Legshaver's name is Samantha -- everyone calls her Sam.

What do you plan to name your firstborn child? Why?

I've named mine already, and I don't even have a girlfriend, much less a wife, much less any kids ... :)

I hope the eventual Mrs. Right agrees! :)

    1st child: if it's a girl - Holly Isabella. If it's a boy ... haven't decided.

haha wow imagine telling her "the first three days of your life, you were nameless" =P

firstborns: avery, for a girl. evan, for a boy. =]

My brother's name was Gene for three days after he was born; then my parents decided that that name was kinda weird. They renamed him James. Such a better name. He's 18 now - and Gene is just too old manish.

I'll have to get back to you on that one... after Baby Dear gets here and we know the gender.

  • smgcrossfire@xanga

My first girl will be Sara, after my mom, to show her how much i appreciate her.
My first boy will be John, after my brother, because he, (not my dad) raised me.
I also sort of like the name Jedediah.
My husband and i both get a say in all names.

Well my boyfriend wants a namesake if we have a boy when we eventually have children.  Though I'm not sure if I want to make my child one of 5 million other Jon Smith's, lol.  As for a girl I have ideas but I don't talk to anyone about them because the first name I loved growing up, a girl who used to be a close friend of mine took.

My firstborn is a boy, Kyler Braden.  Our second is a girl, Melissa Dawn

Not trying to be rude, i'm just confused but is Sea Hag your wife's name?

oh and you picked a really pretty name by the way(:
  • Purple_Harlequin@xanga

I was thinking Ophelia for a girl. It's a pretty name, but the meaning is a bit dark... Heathcliff for a boy?
Then again, I do change my favourite names on an annual basis, because I'm always hearing or coming up with something nicer.

My first born is named Dominic Wyatt.  Dominic is a family name on my hubby's side and Wyatt was a name we liked.

Our second born is named Hunter Drake.  We just liked that name and agreed on it.

If we have a third and it's a girl her name will be Alyssa Renee.  The middle name is my MIL's middle name.

  • Linaldawen@xanga

I want to name my first son after his father...whoever that turns out to be. =) For girls, I love the names Eliza and Clara.

  • AWaters@xanga

If I have a boy I want to name him mark Robert after my father who passed away when I was four, and his closest brother, also my godfather who did the best he could to fill in the gap.

If I have a girl I want to name her Emaline after the most beautiful song in the world.

I love hearing names, esp for babies, not sure why they sound neater when the person who owns them is tiny. We do have names picked out, but no children yet.

girl: Sarah Grace (but Sarah will be spelled differently and secretly, for now)boy: Micah Joseph or Thomas or something else as yet undecided
  • MommyOf2_0507@xanga

My first born boy is Malakai

    And my daughter is Khloe-Gracelynn

  • freedomcome@xanga

i love maisie and anna for a girl and grayson and nolan for a boy

  • happygirl7798@xanga

I named my first child Lucas Ray.  I like that Lucas meant bearer of light and Ray was for my grandfather.  My second child is named Jack Otto.  Jack for my other grandfather who has passed on and Otto for my husbands grandfather who has also passed on.

  • heatherkirk@xanga

Our son is called Harrison Samuel - Harrison because we loved it and it means strong leader and Samuel is a family name on my husbands side - it means God hears! For our next baby due in March if it's a girl Scarlett or Juliette with May or Alexandra as a middle name but we have no idea for a boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sugartomyhoney@xanga

My first daughter was named April Christina.  We decided on the name by going through a book and writing down all the names we liked.  Then crossing them off one by one because one of us didn't like it, or for some other reason.  When we were down to two names we had April and Christina.  And we loved it.  No she was not born in April which is a question she gets all the time.  Ashley Lynn is the second, Justine Noel is the third, Joshua Nathan is the fourth, and Jonah Tobias is the fifth.  I think they are all the most beautiful names in the world and all picked with great care!

  • SWEETxN0VEMBER@xanga

i love the name Priya for a girl and for a boy i have no idea yet!

  • kimmiek89@xanga

For a girl, I've always loved the name Quenivere, as I got older I thought that might be too weird.
Now I'm attached to the name Riley, for a girl.
And for a boy, I've been attached to the name Landon Charles.

Let's just hope I'll find a guy one day who'll want the same hah.
But there's plenty of time for that still.

  • raved@xanga

    @Bricker59@xanga - lol, Sea Hag?

If my firstborn is a girl I will name her Leah, and if it is a boy I will name him Dylan. There aren't any deep meanings behind them though. I just like the names.

  • Jeuno@xanga

I've already come up with names that I would want but I can't choose the top one.
Naomi, Calista (and I have millions more that I'm just not listing because those are the top two I think) for a girl
and (it depends on what the husband's name is because I wouldn't want a juniors):
Daniel, Jared, Dylan, Ashton, Benjamin, James, Cody, Julian, Pax, Peter, Johnathan for a boy

  • thegloriousangel@xanga

our son's name is Giuseppe.  it's after my husbands great grandfather who came over on a boat from italy when he was nine.  i think it's very cool that we can pass on the legacy.  his middle name is Edgar, after my great grandfather.

  • jadore_les_etoiles@xanga

i was named samantha for a week and a half.
and then my mum decided she hated it, and renamed me kaytlin.
