My Little Geniuses- Should I Be Worried?
Guest post submitted by eleven_bee

Earlier this week, I flew back to Denver from Oakland on an insanely early flight that required that I get up at 4 in the morning. Charley and the boys picked me up from the bus stop, and brought me back home, where I managed to nap for an hour before having to drive Charley back to the bus stop so that he could catch his flight back to the bay area at noon.
Needless to say, I was tired.
So later that afternoon, I was lying on the sofa with my eyes closed, not really napping, but certainly trying to conserve my energy, while listening to the boys having a conversation.
Colin: "Hey Kai, I've got gum."
Kai: "Ooh. I want gum."
Colin: "I know where there's some Hubba Bubba..."
My ears perked up a bit. I recalled that there was one last piece of gum in the cabinet above the refrigerator. But surely that was high enough and out of the way enough... right?
And then I heard the scooting of a chair.
Still, I reasoned, they're only a little over 3 feet tall, so even with the chair, they couldn't possibly be able to get to the cabinet.
And then I heard, "Hey let's go down to the basement to get..." followed by some mumbling and the sound of two sets of little feet running down the basement stairs, and then back up just a minute or two later.
"This should work," said Kai.
"Yeah," said Colin, "My lasso is longer than yours, so..."
So now they had chairs and lassos. None of this was enough to roust me from my spot on the sofa yet. I listened to them working together, Colin on the chair, Kai on the floor beside him, in charge of hucking the lasso loop up to try to hook the cabinet knob. "Zing it up higher," coached Colin.
"Wait a minute," said Kai after a dozen or so unsuccessful "zings." And then the sound of Kai bringing the step stool over to Colin.
At this point I rallied and shuffled over to the kitchen to investigate the situation. And this is what I saw:
(By the way, that's Kai jumping up and down with excitement in that second picture.)
On the one hand, I was pretty impressed by their ingenuity. On the other hand, I was tired, and it was early in the afternoon -- still a lot of hours left to go before bedtime. And that's not just the Hubba Bubba cabinet - it's the liquor cabinet too. Hmm. Foreshadowing, anyone?

You have some pretty smart boys there. :) Sounds like you are going to have your hands really full, as if they aren't already.
Good thing mom's have eyes in the back of their heads. You are going to need it. (I actually had my son convinced that was true last year...this year he is on to me!)
They are awefully smart but you might wanna watch out. I had a brother and we came up with some interesting ideas like that too but they often ended up with one of us hurt and the both of us in trouble. A couple broken bones later and a few stitches in my lip and we stopped our ingenuity, lol
oh, yea. and they are only little. those brains are going to become sneaky little teenaged brains.
Clever =) I did a lot of stuff like that as a child, too.
Haha, aww. I would not worry too much. I think everyone snuck candy when they were a kid. Just watch out when they become teens. I'm just as sneaky as I was when I was a kid. Makes me wonder if my mom ever overheard me and my brother sneaking candy! lol
I'd be more worried about them getting hurt by lack of supervision. How do you that lasso wasn't going around someone's neck?
Haha your boys are sooo clever! I used to do stuff like this with my brothers all the time. They must have such a good time driving you crazy. =)
They are too cute!
Funny!
I don't think we always realize just how smart kids are...
That's cute! :] Your boys are very smart. My brother and me never did anything like that. Oh yup. Yeah we did. :]]
Oh that's too funny. My one year old hasn't got that clever yet, but I'm assuming that day is coming.... :)
One time doing something like this, we locked my cousin in the shed outside, he was trying to get out by lowering a metal rod tied to a jomp rope out the top window to try to undo the lock, when the jump rope came undone and the metal rod fell on my face and broke my teeth....
I'm sure this won't make you feel any better, but when they're old enough to want something other than the Hubba Bubba, you won't be hearing chair scraping and lasso-ing.
@IamKelleyK@xanga - Maybe because she was listening. Good grief.
Lmao. That is hilarious. Wow. What a great pair of boys you have there. You definitely have some fun times ahead of you, I can only imagine.
im impressed but a little concerned- what tiny sugar addicts!
Aw, that's cute. They're smart, definitely. But super sneaky. :P It kinda makes you wonder what they'll be doing five years from now, lol.
I'm just so glad to hear that someone else's kids do stuff like this!
THAT is hilarious!
Yea me and my brother turned my mothers hair gray very early. Hell'ns comes to mind.
