Best Books of 2008 - Part 3: Non-Fiction
by Mama Fox Cont'd from Best Books of 2008 - Part 1: Fiction and Part 2: Children's Books
Thought I was only doing fiction? Here are some good non-fiction books:
Seven Principals for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman - This is the best relationship book I have come across so far. It's not that you fight or why, but how you do it. This guy, with all his research, can seriously predict if a marriage will end in divorce after listening to a couple fight for 15 minutes. Seriously insightful and had me analyzing mine and Papa Fox's disagreements to see if we were guilty of the "Four Horsemen" as he calls it. I got it right before one of our road trips here to Austin and it gave us lots of conversation topics during downtime in the hotel. Single, dating or married: Get this book.
Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort - ( I can't remember if I got this late 2007 or early 2008 so we'll just say 2008) This book is a bit difficult to get through but so worth it. With her SALVE technique you learn to Separate your thinking from your child's behavior, turn Attention to your child, Listen, Validate and Empower. It's about how to realize how you were raised and how you perceive certain behaviors so you can separate that thinking when raising your children. Really a great parenting book.Oh there ya have it. My picks, the books that really stand out in my year of reading.
What are some of your non-fiction picks?

Oh and I also wanted to throw The No Cry Sleep Solution by Pantley in there. Amazing book to help your baby to sleep without resorting to cry it out.
I like the Baby Whisperer books. And for marriage books, The Five Love Languages is really good.
A New Earth by Eckhard Tolle is a must-read! For anyone - parent or not, rich or poor, sick or healthy. It really changed the way I look at the world, and has made me much happier and more content.
