Cleaning Relieves My Stress -What Helps You?
by Mama Pig
I noticed something today and it got me thinking. I always seem to get in this almost obsessive cleaning mode whenever my daughter E seems to be having unresolved health issues.
I think it goes back to when she was first born and spent so much time in the NICU. I left home in the middle of the night three weeks ahead of schedule and I didn't return home until almost two weeks later. My house at that point was not quite "company" ready, if you know what I mean. Obviously, I had much more important things to concern myself with, but it did bother me on some level knowing that I had people coming in and the house wasn't in order.
Since that time I have found myself focusing strongly on the house whenever she seemed to be getting really sick. When she spent a week in the hospital last September, I remember spending many hours during the four days prior to her being admitted running around the house making sure that everything was taken care of. The laundry was caught up, the dishes were always put away immediately, etc.
When it came time for her heart surgery, we had an actual date and I spent the week prior once again cleaning to the point of obsession. I just kept telling myself that I didn't want hubby to have to deal with anything at home except the day to day care of the kids, so I cleaned that place until it shined.
What do you do to cope with a stressful situation? Cleaning seems to be my release...what's yours?

working outtt.
I crochet and knit the stress away. It's relaxing and it's a great distraction since a project could be time consuming.
Cleaning as well, surprisingly.
I'm the same way - whenever I get stressed out or angry, I start cleaning things. My boyfriend knows that if he comes home from work and I'm scrubbing the tub, he should probably leave me alone for a bit
Cleaning is my stress reliever too.
cleaning too!!
cleaning or reading.
Cleaning and baking while listening to my ipod. The music manages to keep my mind busy as I sing along to the songs while cleaning or baking keeps my body occupied. It's been a life saver these last few months while trying to deal with bringing a new baby into my life.
Cleaning, organizing...somehow when I'm mad or upset? It becomes easier for me to pare down on clutter.
Cleaning and organizing for me too.. Sometimes going for a long walk at night.
Cleaning with angry music blaring. That really helps me to destress. I also try to get out and run some too. I find that pounding the pavement also helps to get some relief. And then when I get back I'm too tired to be stressed out anymore.
I have a tendency to clean like mad when I'm particularly worried or stressed out -- providing I've the energy to do it at the time, of course.
I suppose that's partly why I spent most of my time cleaning over the past few years, heh.
Another big stress-reliever for me, is going for a run, working with my hands, and writing.
Writing's right up there with cleaning, for me. But that's not surprising, since I'm a writer.
Baking is my stress relief! Granted, I don't have kids yet, so maybe that will change. At the moment though, I usually end up with cheesecakes, pies, and about four dozen cookies in the aftermath of an exam.
I hope your daughter is well now!
