My Wal*Mart Adventure Story: Shopping with My 5 Kids

A while ago, I was at a McDonalds drive-thru and my kids were begging for a Happy Meal so that they could each receive a toy. Despite the fact that McDonalds had decent looking Hot Wheels cars and Polly Pockets instead of the usual gruesome alien action figures, I stood my ground and told them I'd much rather spend a bit more on a better toy from Wal*mart.

Somehow the kids took the toy comment as a promise for new toys the next time we go to Wal*mart. No matter how hard I tried to explain, I failed to pry that thought from their little minds. So I decided to wait out going to Wal*mart. (It's amazing how long I can stay away from that place if I have too.)

Even more amazing though are my children's solid memory. I mentioned going to Wal*mart one day  for diapers and suddenly they all volunteered to accompany me. The gleam in their eyes gave them away so I set ground rules for receiving a toy -- no fussing, stay with me, etc.

We loaded up and headed north. All too soon that blue and grey building came into sight and I started having second thoughts about bringing the whole crew. Luckily, my shopping list was etched into my mind because once we were inside there was no stopping to look for a piece of paper in the bottom of my purse. Carson asleep in his carseat went into the top part of the cart and Essie in the front. I couldn't see a thing over the carseat but, with Carrie and Corban walking on one side and Grace on the other, they navigated for me.

We found the toiletries and furnace filter with me only losing a few brain cells. Finally, we entered the toy zone. The kids picked out appropriate toys after debating way too long over which one they preferred (that is, until I ordered them to make a decision quickly)! A few more brain cells died a painful death as I started realizing I might not make out of the huge store alive.

Should I just ditch the cart and bolt? No, then I'd have to come back. I better just keep going, I thought to myself.

We then proceeded to the Rubbermaid tub section. I needed the right size so I began reading the labels. Suddenly, Carrie lifted Essie out of the cart without my knowledge. I had moved on to the next aisle thinking the kids were doing fairly well, and that we were thankfully almost finished. I turned to put something in the cart and noticed Essie was missing! As we retraced our steps, I told the girls if they ever let Essie out of the cart again they would really get it. I'll figure out later what it is.

We found poor Essie happily clearing off a shelf of Rubbermaid containers. My heart started back up again and I plopped her into the cart along with the one container she had a death grip on. I then ventured forth, determined not to let 5 children get the best of me. I tried not to look too closely at the price tags on all the packages of diapers I put in the cart, hoping to salvage a few of those precious wisps of patience. Bananas, coffee beans and we were on the home stretch. Check out lane in full sight-- haleluia! After swiping my card, I held my hands over my ears as the checker announced the total, pushed my cart out the door and loaded up again for the treck home.

It's been a few days and I think I have recovered fully yet I'm pretty sure I'll return to nighttime shopping.  I'll gladly give up a little sleep in order to walk around the store all alone.

Do you usually go to the store with your children or venture out alone?

Oh my, I can barely take three kids to lunch, I have no clue how I'd be able to take FIVE into Walmart.

If I had a choice, I'd definitely go shopping alone.  But I usually have to take the kids, and going shopping with two toddlers is generally nightmarish, though last night's grocery trip was fairly serene.

I'd make my husband come with me!

Things are easy now because I have an infant.  I can shop with him by myself, but once we begin adding children to build that "large family" we're dreaming of, I'll definitely need another adult to come along. ;)

I take my 3 boys (all under 5 years old) shopping by myself from time to time but usually we shop as a family on the weekend. I actually like having the kids along, I can talk to them (aka myself) without looking crazy.

shopping with kids is always insane, especially in multiples!

five!! i admire your bravery. :)

I take my younger brother and sister out with me every chance I get....they're great kids to take out in my opinion.

When they're with Dad however, they insist on messing with him.

Once, my little brother told a Blue Shirt "help lady help, my Daddy is kidnapping me!!"  ..... since he said Daddy and was 3, the blue shirt assumed he was safe, but that was enough to do my Dad in....lol.

lol.  I have two boys under two.  I don't leave the house with both of them, usually without help from someone.

I have 3 under the age of 4, and I don't like to go to the store with all of them.  I can and have many times, but I much prefer going to the store after they are in bed and my husband is able to handle stay with them.  One day, I took all 3 of them, I had the baby in her carseat on top of the cart, my 3 year old riding in the basket because he was throwing a fit immediately and wouldn't listen, and my 2 year old walking.  Because of the carseat, I couldn't see Tyler in the front of the cart, and suddenly, I hear the sound of tape being pulled off the roll, I realized, he'd unrolled half a roll of tape that I was going to buy, then a few minutes later, he had opened a package of crayons and was coloring in a coloring book that I was buying for a gift for someone.  I though I was going to have to strangle him.  Luckily, I kept my cool, and got them out of the store as quickly as possible.  Needless to say, the next time I went, I wore the baby in the baby bjorn, so that I could see, and the 2 boys sat in a 2-seater cart, so they couldn't reach the items I was going to buy.  :)  I learn fairly quickly.

Quick trips (20 items or less :)) I don't mind too much taking the kids, although it can still be a pain.  Grocery shopping - I leave the kids home with Daddy.  NO WAY I'm taking them with me for that!

@TornadoChaser - HA!  I totally caught myself talking to....myself....while I was shopping the other day.  :)

My kids are olderr now (18 & 13) but when they were younger and I was married we had 4 together and I would occassionally venture to walmart with all kids. Let's just say my checking acct prefers me to go alone :)

  • BEAUTIFULCINNAMONQUEEN@xanga

Alone.   It's not so much the kids, it the HUSBAND! LOL

  • BEAUTIFULCINNAMONQUEEN@xanga

@LolainAZ@xanga - omg!  i'm stalking you! lol.  I looked up after I posted and look, here you are! lol

  • Amyld@xanga

I go alone, unless my husband comes with me.  There is no way I'm taking three children by myself.

  • filtered_sunlight@xanga

Ditto what WendyDarling said, "five!! i admire your bravery. :)"

Having just one, I don't think I have much to fear...but I've been wrong before...

  • Wildflowersp@xanga

I have four (5,4,2,1), and I rarely have the opportunity to shop without at least two.  Once amidst the hubbub at the checkout, I found a pack of gum in my 3yo's panties.  I had to buy it but I didn't let her have any.  Then we had the lecture about not taking others' things.

  • Joyful84@xanga

I only have 1 at the moment, a very active 10 month old... I ususally strap her on my back in  mei tai other wise she is in the cart reaching to pull every thing off the shelves... And if she's in a sling she is doing acrobatics trying to flip out. :0P

I prefer to go shopping alone, but it's NOTHING compared to what you just did, kudos...My Mom had 5 all in 9 years and looking back I don't know how she kept her sanity... DH wants at least 5, I don't know if I'm brave enough.

  • PropertyOfMark@xanga

hahah a great story, brave woman. =P I wouldn't be able to handle 5 kids at home let alone walmart lol

  • PropertyOfMark@xanga

@Wildflowersp@xanga - hahahahahaha sorry, I know it'll happen to me one day but that cracked me up

  • adoremyguy@xanga

I got it pretty nice, our oldest daughter is almost 15, so she babysits the younger ones when I go shopping. When they were all little, I hardly ever went shopping by myself with the children. Usually my husband went with us, or he would pick up groceries on his way home from work. But now since our 2 daughters aren't so little anymore, once in awhile us three go off shopping for the fun of it. (if my Hubby or oldest son can stay with the little ones.)

  • greygeek@xanga

My bride took all five with her often, but she would make them cringe when she smiled ate and said hello to everyone and kept them cringing as she made fast friends of the folks she met in the aisles.

Yes there were many stories that started with, "You will NOT believe what YOUR children did today at Wally-World"  Then I would get the stories from the kids telling me what Mom did, "And then she took the box of crayons and made the guy smell them..and they talked about how it reminded them of grade school... and you know what else..."

    I loved those stories

  • HollandHappy@xanga

Wow. Kudos to you! I only have one child, and still I go clothes/toy shopping alone whenever I can. He's great at the grocery store, though... He likes to wave at all the other customers from his seat in the cart
