as a kid growing up, the rule was no more than 1 hour a day. so usually it was my favorite show "Full House" which was 30 minutes and then law and order {i was a strange child..lol] which was an hour, but it only came on once a week so one day outta the week i missed full house...lol
now with S he's still young to really care what's on tv...he usually watches about 30 minutes but normally its right before nap time so he never makes it the full 30 minutes
as the kiddos get older i'll do the same rule
of no more than 1 hour a day. i want my kids to be outdoors as much as possible and enjoy gorgeous days.
its just tv......
My son watches tv whenever he wants, its the video games that I limit. I cant stop him from watching tv when its snowing. During the summer we are outside constantly so hes not interested in tv then.
I watched tv when I was younger. I never had a timed amount, it was just when my parents felt like I had enough. I had a tv in my room when I was 12 or 13 and the following year they got me a vcr with a few movies. I never sat in front of the tv, ALL THE TIME though. My son watches tv in the morning (I am NOT a morning person), until I get in a better mood, haha. Right now the tv is on Animal Planet and he is coloring more so than tv. He has a tv in his room, but that is to watch movies (he doesn't have cable in his room).
He is an awesome child though. I don't think tv is a horrible thing. He has learned how to count, say bless you, be polite, and so on and so forth. I normally have it on Noggin for him. It is an awesome channel for a two-year-old.
I watched plenty of TV as a kid. I had cable in my room by the time I was 7, but it didn't affect me negatively at all. I was a good student and they rewarded me. I feel that as long the child gets their schoolwork done, and has good grades, they should be able to watch TV whenever they want to. That's the way my parents did it, and I turned out fine.
well. Theres a problem kinda. I know its a bad habit but the TV is constantly on in my house. We have TV in our own rooms but we generally like to watch it in the livingroom.
I have a baby brother. When we're watching TV, it might be on but he isnt watching at all. He just crawls around the living room. But sometimes (and this really only is like 10% of the time) we might put on baby Einstein if he's being cranky and wont go down for his nap easily. But usually he can fall asleep on his own. Besides that, we might have him watch 20-30 minutes of that mickey mouse show to calm him down or to keep him occupied.
We don't have a TV ;) Well, we have a TV, but reception is nil and we only use it to watch movies. We usually watch 2-3 movies a week, at the most, but our children will watch less than that.
The TV is on pretty much all the time in our home. However, it is more for background noise than anything. It is on right now, but C is playing Batman with his rope and car and E is playing with the phone.
They do watch Noggin at times, but if I had to say exactly how much they are actually watching the television, it would be very little.
I watched a lot of television when I was a kid, weekend we were spolit 5 hours of kids programmes on Saturday mornings on one channel.
As for my kids (I dont have anyone) since I am not in a relationship, if I was me and my girlfriend/partner would sit down and discuss how many hours would be suitable.
we'd watch saturday morning cartoons (mostly my brother), and maybe an hour after school? this was elementary school.
we don't own a TV, so my daughter may watch a short clip on youtube if i need to use the bathroom, or really need to get something done without her distracting me, which is rare.
My family has the TV on ALL the time when I go over there. I think it was on ALL the time when I was growing up, too. It makes me crazy because when I'm visiting over there my sister (15) will walk in and turn the TV on and then go in her room and close the door. WHY does it need to be on if noone is watching it???????
But that's just me - I like it to be quiet if there's not a reason for noise. :) My son (3) will watch an hour or so of TV per day - a video or something on PBS. My daughter (18 months) doesn't watch the TV even when it's on. She just isn't interested (yet :)).
I didn't watch a whole lot of tv as a kid. I loved playing outside with my friends way more.
I watched TV as a kid... cartoons in the morning mostly. I didn't watch a great deal though.
My daughter is 14 months and doesn't watch any TV. We don't even turn on the TV until after she goes to bed. I have to say, I get alot more done! I used to have the TV on all the time.... always saying 'I liked the background noise'. Truth be told, I would find myself getting sucked into something and then sitting there for an hour or more. Also, I would 'have' to catch particular shows and then not do anything else during the day.
Now, TV is what it should be... it's a source of entertainment that we use at the end of the day. During the day I get more done around the house, play with my daughter and don't loose hours in front of the TV.
As my daughter gets older I'm sure I will let her watch some amount of TV...but it won't be her primary source of entertainment. I prefer to encourage creative outlets and play. That is what works for us.
hmmmmm, i would say "3 a day" but how true is that?
I remember watching like 15-30 min before leaving for school. Watching about an hr - 1 1/2 for after school cartoons.
I know i got to watch tv with my mom after dinner time - primetime.
As i got older, i know it shifted towards video game and probably increased to about 4-5 hrs a day.
For punishment (grounding), 0 hrs of tv for a month. sooooooooo yeah.
TV was and is a huge influence on the way i lived and is now living - since i'm majoring in advertising (art direction) i would say that don't inhibit a good thing? but never let it go overboard. School does come before TV. As long as they finish what they need to do, then they can watch as much as they want (my parent's philosophy).
i use to watch a lot of tv when i was growing up, my son in the other hand he has time limits of watching tv, and also what he can watch compared to me when i could watch anything that was pg-13 when i was 6 or 7 my son is only allowed to watch pbs or preschool shows
When children are watching tv, parents should know what is on. When parents sit with their children and talk about what they are watching, it is more beneficial to children. The tv shouldn't be the baby sitter. Too much tv is non-productive. There should be more activity and fun things to do, hopefully educational as well. A 10 min. activity is a good break and seems special. Tap into their creativity.
