  • Kids and Politics, They Can Mix

    Photographer Jess by Photographer Jess

On this beautiful, Midwestern Fall morning it's ideal conditions for Election Day 2008!! The weather was in the 60's with not a cloud in the sky! We've talked a lot around our house over the past few months about the elections and how it all works. The kids are excited to get to watch some of the returns tonight and cheer for our candidates.

I took my oldest along with me to vote. We waited in a long line for our turn at the ballot box, but it was exciting and he seemed fascinated by the proceedings.

I let him slide our ballot into the box.

We both proudly sported our "I Voted" stickers.

What a great day to be an American!!

Do you talk to your kids about the voting process, or incorporate them in any way? How do you feel about the results of this year's election?

Very cool you took your son!

My husband and I were talking last night about how our boys will be old enough to understand the next election and how we are going to incorporate it into our homeschooling that year. We are both excited about teaching our boys about the history of our  country and how common people effect it. Our oldest is 4 now and just wasn't grasping it this year.

My kids are 3 and 1 so they obviously weren't all that interested in the election but I took them with me to vote (there wasn't a line, otherwise I would have waited until my husband got home from work :)).  My son (3) was asking about what I was doing and why so I explained simply that I was picking the people that I thought should be in charge of our country.  Nothing too indepth, but enough to satisfy him.

I am not thrilled with the results - I did not vote for Obama.  But he is now the president-elect and I will move on with my life.  :)

we took our 22 month old and our 9 month old along with us to vote. it was neat!

My 7 year old daughter cried this morning. Why you may ask....because Obama won the election.

We don't talk a lot about politics in our home but they were talking a lot about it in school. They even had a "school election" and McCain won.

My daughter wanted McCain to win sooo bad.

She was so upset. We reminded her that God is in control. We also let her know that Obama is who we will have to follow and pray for if we wanted him to win or not. UNLESS he tells us to go against something God says.

My daughter is 3, so I've tried to keep it as age appropriate as I could. I did, however, take her to the poll with me, and told her step-by-step what I was doing. I know she doesn't understand half of it, but I wanted her to be able to say she was there when this historical election took place.

She also stayed up with me last night as we waited for the results. She doesn't quite grasp why I cried, or why I was so happy, but one day... one day she will.

My kids (8, 6, 5, 4) went with my wife and I to vote, and they were interested.  I'd explained to them which Presidential candidate I supported, and Ivy had reminded them that whether the candidate won or lost, it would be ok.
The kids enjoyed going with us, especially watching the ballots go into the counting machine. (Especially when I told them they'd be back in April to watch Ivy and I vote in the city elections)

@Kristenmomof3@xanga - School elections? What a great way to help children learn about the process!! And yeah, my kids had a similar response this morning. But we were excited to watch history in the making and they enjoyed seeing the highlights from the speeches this morning.

God is in control. Even though my candidate didn't win I'm still so proud to be an American and to see this historic moment. I only wish his politics could have been different...

Since my son was 4 I have been taking him with me to vote every election.  I vote every time there is one so he has had a lot of exposure.  I didn't take him this year because I voted early and he was in school but I will take him again the next time I vote.  His school held a mock election and he was very excited to get to vote in that.

My husband took our 6 year old with him.  He let him touch the screen to register the votes.  He came home and was so proud of himself because as he said "I voted!".  He was disappointed this morning, but as the other parent above, we reminded him God is in control, and moved on to other things.

I don't have kids yet but I think it would be cool to take them with me when I vote. When I was in sixth grade, we had a mock election at my school and even though I knew it was fake, I was so happy I voted and talked about it for weeks! LOL

I don't have kids, but my dad used to take me with him when he went to vote.  I think it's one of the reasons why I was so excited about being able to vote when I turned 18.  This was the first Presidential election I was able to vote in.

My kids are only 3 and 1, but my 3 year old was very excited about the election. It's crazy; I assumed it would be way over her head, but back in August, she was watching PBS, and there was some political coverage, and she pointed at the tv and said, "Do you know who that man is, mom? He's Barack Obama, and he is going to be the President." I was just stunned! Good thing she only watches wholesome tv, because she is a little sponge, absorbing everything!

We are big Obama supporters in our family, so we were very happy with the results. When my daughter got a call from her grandma yesterday, the first thing she said was "Guess what, Grandma-Obama won!"

I think she may have a future in politics!
