  • Why is Breastfeeding So Shocking?

    Mama Hippo by Mama Hippo

I just read an article in a gossip magazine talking about Angelina Jolie's cover for W magazine, where she's shown breastfeeding one of her twins.  Actually, no, the picture doesn't SHOW anything, but it insinuates that she's breastfeeding.  This cover has been called "Shocking! Revealing!" and is clearly quite controversial.

I can't for the life of me figure out why.

First of all, this is Angelina Jolie.  If there's anything shocking about this photo, it should be how shockingly normal it is.

Second, it's not very revealing.  Any cover of Glamour or Cosmo magazine has more cleavage than what Angie's showing.  Heck, I have a science magazine that shows a baby breastfeeding and is more revealing than the W cover photo.

I guess we as a culture are still trying to fight this idea that breastfeeding is "icky" and shouldn't be seen by anyone other than the baby and mother.

What do you think of Angelina's cover shot?

I think its completely normal and natural and I think people who think "breastfeeding" is icky need to get over themselves. we are the only "species" who doesnt feed our babies from our own milk as a majority....

I just flattened my nose against the screen and have to say that I would have had no clue that she was BF'ing if you hadn't mentioned it. Sad. It wasn't so long ago that people had their panties wadded over the cover of a parenting magazine which did all-out show a baby breastfeeding...latched on; no nipple showing...not an offense picture by my standards... I didn't get what the big deal was then and I don't get it now.

the media is trying to keep the masses from being mature . they have much more control over immaturity .

  • MadamDragonfly@xanga

i nursed my son and i would get disgusted looks from people because i would have to feed him so often i could leave the house without having to nurse him at least once while out and about. i got little support from my community. one woman i remember congratulated me on doing such an amazing thing for my child and told me to not let what others say or think deture me. to her what i was doeing was beautiful and a loving sacrifice as my sagging breats will attest. i don't understand peoples discust with nursing, that is bizzar to me!!

  • Femme003@xanga

There are some really conservative people out there... Breastfeeding is natural.  And better for the baby!

  • magicalmusicgirl@xanga

I think it's tasteful, a lot more so than many magazine covers.

I love it. I think it's very tasteful. What I hate now about our nutty society is that when playboy comes out, everyone rushes for it, but they think this is disgusting? What do you think they did in the days before formula & before a baby was old enough for cow's milk? Alot of people need to grow up.

There's shawls & other coverups so good, you wont know a mother was breastfeeding so really there's no issue now. The only thing I dont like is when a mother whips off her top showing everything & says she has to feed her baby & leaves it out for the world to see. That's a bit much. Other than that, there's no problem with breast feeding to me.

@Femme003@xanga - They are conservative they are ignorant and uninformed.  There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding in public as long as the mother is discreet.  There is nothing wrong with this picture.  The only thing surprising is Jolie looks like she still has her own breasts!  There is so much plastic in Hollywood, that to me is the shocking part!

  • TornadoChaser

I love the picture. Although I actually doubt her baby was latched on it at that moment, it was still implied and was a very sweet picture.

I've breastfeed on many occassions in public. I even had people come up to me and try to look at my baby while he was eating! They just didn't realize I was nursing him instead of just holding him. Breastfeeding isn't about boobs flopping out, completely bare chests, lots of flashing that people make it out to be. I'm sure most moms would rather be discreet about it, whether or not they decide to cover up. Most of the time it's people throwing a fit about it that brings more attention to nursing in public.

  • Random_Goldfish@xanga

I think Angie's cover looks very real, she isn't posing for anything. She's not playing a character or potraying a persona other than herself in her own enviornment. I think it's lovely.

Now the whole deal with breast feeding thing is ridiculous. Once upon a time, before the days of carnation goodstart...how did you feed your baby? With your breast! And it's natural, there is no worry on what your feeding your baby if it comes from you.

  • EndlessCycleof_Me@xanga

It looks pretty normal and G rated to me. At least she is not shown holding her baby up to the stirring wheel while driving! [Britney] I like the idea of public breast feeding. If only people weren't so closed-minded!

  • MommasBbyKnJke@xanga

I think its absolutely beautiful how normal she looks.  I think the magazine they did was so great, she looked like any one of us.  I makes me wish I knew her, so I could know what kind of person she was.

I breast fed my daughter for the first five months of her life, and I would, time to time, have to breast feed her in public.  I think its fine as long as you are discreet and all.  I always made sure I had a blanket to wrap the baby in and a shirt that covered everything up for the most part.

  • babydreams@xanga

I love this picture of Angie! I think it's so natural and loving and depicts her as a loving and sweet mom. =)

I think people want to pervert the wonderful image of a mom feeding her baby, that's why the media is making such a big deal out of the cover.

Not being a mom yet, I'm always in awe when I see a woman breastfeeding. There's something so amazing about a woman being able to feed her baby with milk produced within her body!

  • JDNCL@xanga

Personally, I think this is a beautiful picture.

I don't understand why some people feel the way they do about BF'ing.. but I do have first hand experience with people not feeling comfortable around it.

I BF my almost 4 month old son.  Since day one, my whole family has been very supportive.. my mom BF'd all 3 of her daughters and I was soo thankful and very excited to give this wonderful gift to my son.  However, my husband's side didn't think so much of it.  In fact, my SIL was going to BF'd her baby (she's 7 months preggnant now) until she witnessed me do it, and decided that formula is "easier".

I loooove the moments with my son that I can feed him..I have absolutely no trouble getting him to latch on, and compared to many women, the expeience has been 'perfect' you might say. I enjoy every  minute of it and if ANYTHING, it's muuch much easier than having to get up and make a bottle of formula or carry around powder in your diaper bag.   Not to mention how much cheaper and soo much healthier it is for your babies.

I got a little off the subject, but you can see how I understand the situation.  What else did God intend for them to do if not for our babies to have the nurishment our breasts produce?

  • SimplyPynki@xanga

@sugartomyhoney@xanga - The problem with "discreet" breastfeeding is with the qualifier "discreet".  It's subjective.  And too many people are prigs where the mere SUGGESTION of a a boob being in a kids mouth for nourishment is WRONG!  and DISGUSTING!  And VILE, and if your kids is older than say... a year, or for some people 6 weeks... CHILD ABUSE!!

  • glorious_and_free@xanga

I think this photo is beautiful!  I am not a big fan of Hollywood and don't keep myself up to date with it at all.  But I think it is great that a photo like this made the front page of something.  It looks natural and, um, 'real', and is truly a tasteful and discreet photo.

I nurse in public all the time.  I do so as discreetly as possible, but I'm sure it still makes some people uncomfortable.  I've gotten over it.  No one has ever said anything to me about it, and if they did they'd get an earful.  I think some people just need to grow up.

  • DrmChazed@xanga

the cover is very tasteful ... & yes ... natural! it's a classy pic for something as simple as being a mom.

  • MommyGEM_RN@xanga

Wow, I think that is a beautiful picture! I think it's the most beautiful picture of her i've ever seen! I can't stand how our culture still looks down upon breastfeeding. It's the most natural and normal thing. There are way more revealing photos on other magazines...I can't understand why this is so controversial. And kudos to Angie for breastfeeding twins!!!

  • LisiliLostRedemption@xanga

there's only one thing i can say about this:
i'm so glad i live in germany...

  • hatcherbee@xanga

I think that is probably one of the most flattering photos of her that I've ever seen. Weather she's actually breastfeeding or not.

I breastfed/feed all my children for as long as they want it until about 2... and I could write you a book just on the ignorance to breastfeeding in this country, based soley on comments from my own family members over the years.

I never have and never will understand how something like breastfeeding could be anything less than the norm..

  • LuvedByTheSun@xanga

there's nothing wrong with breastfeeding goddammit.  F*ck conservative people.

  • elr6355@xanga

I say there is nothing wrong with breastfeeding in public.

  • EccentricSiren@xanga

I had to look pretty closely to figure out she was breast feeding. I think it's very tastefully done. I think breastfeeding should be treated like something normal, not something weird. The baby has to eat somehow, and breastfeeding is supposed to be the healthiest way to do it.

  • OhItWontBeForever@xanga

i can't believe this :| this is ridiculous; the photos they put up these days, i'd call this picture surprisingly respectful and she's well covered up !!! i can't understand how there's anything wrong with it? :S

people need to get rid of this mentality (right, easier said than done), especially when they seem to be so accepting of the disgusting, PLENTY more evealing photos that are everywhere you look nowadays!

also, i've seen some coool mother-and-baby t-shirts about breastfeeding, they're cute, here are some i can remember:

baby's: "if my mommy feeding me offends you, DON'T LOOK!"  and mother's: "when you feed your kids in the public restroom, then i'll feed my baby there!"

more mother's: "as long as you can feed your child in public, so will i!"

    ahhh, i can't remember any more :(

but they were cute and made me smile :D
