My son didn't watch any tv until 18 months old.  And even then it was an occasional Elmo DVD or Sesame Street on PBS.  These days he'll watch Sesame Street about 2 or 3 times a week and an Elmo's World dvd once a day.  I think that's plenty for a 21 month old, but at least he's learning something from the few shows he watches.  At 20 months he'd learned how to count to 3; no huge feat, but I'm still proud of my little guy.  He also understands some basic opposites: up, down, open, close; on,off, among others.  Those are things he initially picked up off Elmo or SS and DH and I fostered after.  But for now, we'll stick to those basic learning PBS shows.

My kids were really young, as soon as they were old enough to sit and enjoy it...I think it's more a matter of content and the amount of t.v. you allow them to watch in a day/week.

My older boys weren't interested in watching until they were 18 months - 2 years and even now at 4 and 2 they often leave the room in the middle of a movie to go play. Like what they just did. Haha! My 1 year old will glance at it from time to time but doesn't watch.

I really don't have an opinion on when but it should be limited for under 2 I feel.

I used to put older dd in a bouncer and tune into The Teletubbies.  She had a crush on the sun!

  • Amyld@xanga

Not before the age of 3.

  • kedward6@xanga

I think it could be alright at any age really.  It is just the content and how much of should be allowed is the question.

When I have kids I hope to not let my kids get addictive to it like I was as a child.  I also plan on getting a safe gaurd for the it.  And totally block certain channels.  I want to teach my kids the bad things in life on my own time.

My son started watching tv at 9 months.

Not a whole lot of tv of course. But that is when he discovered elmo. So when he is sick, it is ia lifesaver.

Now that he is older and likes to run around and play. He does not watch it much.

My daughter just turned 1 and has yet to watch TV.  We're not big TV watchers in this house anyway, so it's not that big of deal.  One day, I actually had the TV on, and she was so confused.  She'd never seen the TV on before!  I don't plan on letting her watch any TV shows until she's at least 2.

  • lil_lady_j@xanga

DS loves ELMO and Blues Clues
he only watches them when its nap time or right before bed [he needs noise to sleep...lol]

so he only really watches about 30-35mins a day of it...and not all at once

My son has always watched Baby Einstein videos - he loved them from the time he was teeny tiny.  He still loves TV and will sit and watch a full length movie if I let him.  I rarely do - I limit it to about an hour or so per day.

My daughter is 18 months and isn't/never had been interested in watching anything.

I don't think it matters - There are many really good programs on today that stimulate and educate children.  As long as common sense and moderation are used - I think it's ok.  Never Never use it as a babysitter!  My opinion.

  • LilSweetJew@xanga

I believe it depends on what kind of television programs.

  • filtered_sunlight@xanga

We're not huge fans of the "boob tube" to begin with, so her exposure to it, period, will be very limited. I can say Megan won't be watching it until at least two, even then I'll be genuinely surprised if it's more than 1 or 2 shows per month.

I don't remember when my son started to watch tv... it is more like a background noise for him than anything. Only if Spongebob is on, will he actually WATCH it, hehe. He loves Noggin as well, but he doesn't have cable in his room (just a tv and dvd player for his Spongebob movie) so he only can watch that in the living room. I like Noggin -- my son knows SO much 'cause of that show. I like sitting down and watching it with him as well -- they do some neat stuff. My son is 22-months-old and has been able to count to 10 since he was about 18-months-old. He is learning his ABC's and they are teaching how to count to five in Spanish now. He dances to Yo Gabba Gabba. Normally he only watches tv in the mornings, allowing me to wake myself up. Then after naptime, we play without the tv on.

I don't think it really matters when -- just don't use it as a babysitter, haha.

My daughter is not quite two and she watches about 2 hours of t.v. a day.

Well, yanno, of her shows. She watches it with me occasionally. She's quite fond of that Handy Mandy. =P

My son was never interested in the TV even though we are a TV household.  It is always on more as a distraction than anything else.  At 13 months he just stood up one day and looked at the TV and started dancing to a commercial.  I knew then I had to start allowing him to watch educational programs.  Every morning after we drop the olders at the bus stop we watch sesame street for an hour and he's pretty content with that.

  • mariahatescupcakes@xanga

    I don't think it matters.
What matters is what your child watches.
You should start out only allowing your child to watch programs, such as dvds or video tapes, that have been approved by you first.

As they get older, gradually expand this, until you trust them to watch regular tv freely.

  • blogging_or_therapy@xanga

My kids became interested in it when they were about a year old or so. They watched public television, the educational programs, Sesame Street especially, and Barney as much as he drove me crazy was a favorite.

  • MaganLe@xanga

All the children I know in my extended families have watched TV ever since they could pretty much sit! That's pretty bad, I suppose. I for one don't want a TV in my future home. I would just want my kids to play outside and stuff! Haha, what happened to those days? These kids are glued to the TV and playing console/PC games all the time, now. :/

  • JJPrint3rd@xanga

We are gradually working the tv out of our home.

I play VeggieTales videos on the computer,, but all our 13 month old is interested in is the music. We banned the tv from the living room.. its been demoted to the basement.. next step is out the front door.I don't think kids need to watch tv at all. Its a waste of time and there is toooooooo much trash on there. I think parents need to step up and parent, not let the tv do the work for them. Sit and read them a book, go for a walk, do crafts, do SOMETHING.. just leave the tv off.

My daughter is 20 months old. We don't have a TV (by choice) because we don't watch too much and full episodes are available online anyhow. My in-laws liked to show her videos before we told them to stop it. This was when she was a few months old. They are so lost as to what to do with her...even now. She didn't really watch anything until recent months. They are mostly videos of herself or other family videos. Otherwise, she'll catch a snippet of The Wiggles or "The New Mickey Mouse Club 1977" on YouTube when I need to use the bathroom and she needs some distraction. But she'll be content playing on her own as well.

  • tortallcit@xanga

I think when I raise a kid I don't plan on having them really even be conscientiously aware of TV until they're at least 3 1/2 or 4... I almost never watch it and I'd rather just keep mass media on one laptop than everywhere in an apartment.

  • my_final_username@xanga

I dont know what age I was first introduced to watching television.

    From 3 years old.
