  • The VP Debate: Already a Blockbuster

Tonight, the much anticipated Vice Presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin will be broadcast from my city, St. Louis, Missouri. The experienced politician with well-known gaffes facing off the sassy good looking, but ignorant young governor from Alaska is the much talked about event all this week on the radio, on TV and all over town.

For a political junkie like me, this should be the juiciest moment that I have been waiting for. It should be the night where I plop down in front of the TV with popcorn and soda in hand, ready to be thoroughly entertained.  There will be nail-biting moments, I am sure, where Biden will inevitably say something off-the-chart. There will be rolling-on-the-floor-laughing-my-ass-off moments when Palin inevitably mentions Russia and how she can see it from her house, or maybe another one of those endearing cute jokes of hers (perhaps she'll have a mascara joke this time).

There might also be tear-jerking moments if she mentions her Down's baby or goosebump-producing moments when both of them mention sons in Iraq. Maybe I can count how many times "change," "mavericks" and "reforms" will be mentioned. It will be educational for my kids to relearn counting.

Now, this is a guaranteed pure entertainment with educational aspect that you can't get anywhere else. And all for the price of almost none (excluding the electricity cost, of course) Beat that, Netflix! This is more exciting than re-arranging my Netflix queue in the hope of scoring a winning movie for the weekend.

All week, I've been seeing the footage of Palin being prepped at the boot camp in Arizona with her cute little face totally concentrating at her coaches. Yup, cramming at the last minute sucks, whether you are cramming for an exam or for the debate, especially if you have not been studying or paying attention from the start. I've read about Biden being told how to walk a fine line between appearing to be knowledgeable, but not to shoot off his mouth in his usual reckless manner.

My advice to Joe: bite down your lips and think before you spray off the words. It works for Bill Clinton, so it might work for you as well. The pundits, looking like the starving hyenas on the dying prairie, are already salivating over the details they will get to pour over and dissect in detail. Even Gwen, the moderator, who has been in the business and known for  her professionalism is getting her share of scrutiny from the media, especially the Fox News. If Palin fails or blunders, Gwen will take the blame -- Fox has already decided. A good plot with a built-in scape goat. Perfect scripting! The stage is being set for the actors, the audience, the directors, the writers, the stone-throwers, the voyeurs, and the by-standers, except that I get to miss it all tonight.

Unfortunately or fortunately, I will not be watching or even listening to the debate tonight because I will be in the woods with my daughter's sleep-over camp, away from the internet, the TV, and the media. At first I was bummed about not having to see the broadcast live, but then I thought maybe it is not a bad thing after all. Debates are great to watch but rarely do they sway the voters. Most of us are already in one camp or another by this time. And frankly, I don't understand a bit about being the "undecided." Who the hell are you and why are you undecided? Where have you been the last eight years? I want to ask these undeciders. Did you vote for Bush the second time and still think the mess this country is in has nothing to do with Bush's policies? If so, you are a lost cause at this point. No swaying there.

When I emerge from the woods on Friday, both sides will have declared the winner and the noises of the talking heads will be hopefully quieter by then. I can just catch the important highlights from the Daily Show and watch the real debate on the Saturday Night Live. I'm saving the popcorn until then.

Who do you support in the VP Debate?
