If a boy: Cedric Arthur GaryPapa Turtle kept turning up his nose at Cedric but I just kept coming back to it. I liked it the best and it seemed to go well with Arthur for a middle name, which was decided on a while ago. We also figured, if we'd be honoring my uncle because he's passed on, then why not honor his father too - hence, Gary.
If a girl: Maeve Gwennan Gwennan was a funny one. I felt it went the best with Maeve right away. After doing some digging around, I learned that with two Ns it is Welsh for "blessed," but if you take away an N, it becomes Irish for "blister on the skin." Yeah, we'll stick with two Ns then, hehe.
Also importantly, they both flow well, combined with our last name. They all follow my rules of no rhyming, no onomatopoeia (that's extreme anyways), on the side of not common (yes I am aware of the Harry Potter syndrome, but wasn't thinking of Harry Potter when Cedric up and struck me, honestly), and all originate from some language branch in the current UK.
Shew, glad that's over with! That was the most arduous time we have given ourselves in naming a new arrival. As I'm now 40 wk 1 day DPO, that's a relief.
How long did it take you to pick out a name for your child? Did you name him/her after someone in your family or based on your heritage?

I like Cedric... it reminds me of Harry Potter haha =]
Ha. I was quick about it. I had it picked out 8+ years in advanced! LOL. I've always liked the way "Megan Elizabeth" sounded and Tim was good with it. For a boy, I liked "Langston" and Tim liked "Alistair"; a favorite author on Tim's part...me? I just like what I like. :o)
I LOVE those names!
It took us almost 4 months to pick a name for our youngest. With the older two we already had names we wanted before I got pregnant but our 3rd was a tough one.
I had some fun playing the waiting game with my husband. When I wanted to talk about it, he wasn't ready yet...hence the waiting period. After that, we talked about it on and off again for about a month or so before we came to any conclusions. What's nice is that we now have two other names (one boy and one girl) that we like and will more than likely be using for future children. The only one that has any family significance to it is the boys name yet to be used. The first name was my uncle's...he passed away when I was in 3rd grade. He meant a lot to me, and although he has been dead 17 years, his personality still sticks with me...as well as his big heart.
We have a VERY common last name in our area and I refuse to use a first name that I know someone else with the same last name has... it's hard!
You'll have to check back on my site for the reveal... I'm not sure if I want to tell the world before the baby's born or not! If you beg hard enough, I might. I want to hear all of your opinions on them!
Maeve is one of my absolute favorite names!
my lil girls name has nothing to do with family or heritage. i just always liked the name Mckenzie, but i spell it Makynzi. and Danielle fits perfectly. i had it picked out years before i had gotten pregnant, infact i even knew i was gonna name my first little girl that b4 i met her father. he liked it though so we had no arguements. (thank God cuz i wasnt giving him a chance to argue about it!)
When I hear Cedric I think of Cedric the Entertainer. He's the only Cedric I know.
How do you pronounce "Maeve"?
My daughter has a unique name ("Shiphrah", it's Biblical). I love names that aren't all that common, as well as family names. If Baby #2 is a boy he'll be Kirk Walter (after my father and grandfather) and if it's a girl she'll be Chloe Nicole or Chloe Evelyn (Evelyn was my grandmother's name and I definitely want to use it, but we might save it for a first name).
I too, like Cedric. It reminds me of Harry Potter. :)
Our girl name came quick to us. If our son would have been a girl, Natalie Annesleah. Natalie had something to do with Christmas time, and since he was due 12/27, figured it fit. And Annesleah is where my maiden name originates from, and since I didn't keep my maiden name I wanted to carry it on somehow through a daughter. But of course, the second we found out it was a boy -- I was stumped. Every name I liked and brought up to the husband, he just threw it away. He didn't like any of them. I liked Hayden, Desmond, and not-so-common names and he was saying Daniel, Alexander, and other very common names. Well I had come up with Kaleb London, 'cause I liked the name London for a middle name and KNEW I wanted that as a middle name, we just had to find a first name... I looked up the meaning for Kaleb and didn't like it -- I think I looked it up wrong or something 'cause I swear I remember it saying it was the meaning of a dog or something, haha. Well the husband texted me one day asking if I liked Sean and Sean London flowed perfectly for me and that was probably about a month or two before he was born. So today we have Sean London. =)
My sons name was easy for me cause he was named after his fathers heritage as well as after someone, Malakai Dakota Jeffrey. And my daughter isnt named after anyone, Khloe-Gracelynn Brielle, her middle name Brielle is Irish though which is part of my heritage.
It didn't take us long, but we went with something totally different than what we thought at first.
We found our name in a baby book, it was the only name we both liked out of about 100K+ names. Added bonus, it's Greek, like both of our names, and it has the same ending as my name. Her middle name is Japanese, because mine is also, and it translates to a tree that we both love.
cedricccc what a heartthrob
in hp, that ishaha your son might be one as welland maybe if your daughter doesn't like maeve (which i like but could be a little too weird for her tastes?) she can always go with gwen
Wow, two of may favorite names!
We picked out our favorites while we were still dating: Alexander and Margaret. Both are family names, but we plan to use an unconventional nickname (Zander, because my Hungarian ancestors went by Shandor).
@Mom2Be - I hear you, our last name is common (probably second only to "Smith" lol) and on top of that Papa Turtle has a common first name, which caused a lot of hassle during his school years! So that's one reason we always leaned toward not so common names.
@MlleBaroque@xanga - I think of Cedric the Entertainer too lol. Maeve is pronounced "May-v" (silent V)
@OoOoOoMeLiSsAoOoOoO@xanga - That's how I was with my first girl, her name was picked out long before I even fathomed we'd actually have a girl (after three boys, we were expecting another boy!) - it suits her perfectly too.
@incoherent__ramblings@xanga -
I don't mind the HP connection (we're huge fans to begin with!), Papa Turtle was all "that's what everyone else is doing!" (naming their kids after the characters). I have a deep love of linguistics and where names and words come from and it's apparent that JKR does as well. Cedric is literary in origin but was culled from the Welsh language. So, all in all I feel it's fitting.
i just came across your site and i LOVE it. : )
my daughter got my middle name and her dad's middle name: Taylor Starr
My son - his name was kind of made up. I always liked Tyler but my husband didn't. One day he came up with Kyler. We had never heard it before but liked it so Kyler Braden became our son's name. (Interesting note - Kyler is becoming a very popular name and all the people I've met who have named their child that think they made it up! And all around the same time, too - weird, huh?)
Our daughter's name, Melissa Dawn, has been picked out for as long as I can remember - thankfully I married a man who liked the name cause I wasn't going to compromise on that one!
I don't have my own children yet...but if you promise not to steal the names I have picked out already...I will tell you
girl = Kale Dakota and Jessa Diane
boy = Taylor Benjamin and Jordan Emanuel
Boy:
Marquis Vlad Tecumseh
Paying tribute to Marquis de Sade, Vlad Tepes and Tecumseh is just a cool ass white person name.
Girl:
Sarah Elizabeth Bathory
My fiance wants Sarah, she's always loved the name, and I wanted to pay tribute to the most proficient female killer, Elizabeth Bathory, the Blood Queen.
Names are tricky to come up with since you'll be stuck with it probably at least for a while...
We've already got the first name decided for our first boy, should we have one. Anexander is a name my fiance' mentioned to me some time ago. I looked at him weird when he first said it, but it has since grown on me, and I really like the name... enough so that I have used it for the son of one of my current roleplay characters just to play with it... something I've done with both the female names I like should we have a girl.
Speaking of those female names, one is Marya (pronounced like Maria), a name I have always loved. The other is Aezrah.
No idea on middle names, though.
