Potty Training: Take Two
by lilwetduckie
My son is only 21-months-old. I had tried to potty train him at the age of 18-months-old but I was getting frustrated after a few weeks and was just fed up of him not even noticing he needed to use the potty. Well recently I have been noticing different potty training tips and tricks. I had someone say they potty trained both of their kids in three days. One a boy, the other a girl. I was sitting there thinking, come on over here and get my son to use the potty in just three days. Of course, the lady started with both of them at the age of 28-months-old.All this week I am going to have him without a diaper (even during naptime and at night). I have plenty of blankets and sheets for him if he wets the bed though. =) I am going to see how this works. I know I will not be online much at all this week to keep up with Sean and watching him and the signs of when he needs to use the potty.
Last night I made Sean a sticker chart for when he pees or poops in the potty. I was going to let him help me make it but I forgot about it and the husband decided to go jogging last night and I was hoping he would help us. Ugh, oh well. I made it and bought plenty of stickers for Sean to put on the poster board.
Stars, smileys, Spongebob (his favorite), cars, trucks, and Dora (another favorite).

Wish us luck! How long did it take you to potty train your kids? Have you ever used the method of letting your child go diaper-free in order to help them learn?

My daughter is 3 and we are still potty training. She poops on the potty always. Unless she's sick or something is wrong I don't have to clean a poopy diaper. When we are out she asks to use the potty a lot. Sometimes to pee sometimes to just sit there. I've tried putting underwear on her but I just end up cleaning puddles off the floor and out of her favorite chair. When we were on vacation she used maybe 5 diapers in a week, she just kept using the potty while we were out. I wish she would do that at home but I just can't seem to get her completely off the diapers.
It took me (and my daycare provider) about 2 months to potty train my daughter for during the day and about 4 more months to get her completely potty trained and not wetting the bed at night. We used the diaper free method also. We would put R in a pair of "big girl panties" - it took a couple of times of her wetting herself for her to realize that she had to sit on the potty, but after that, it was like clock work.
My son turned 3 in June. We had tried several times (unsuccessfully) to potty-train before that. But around July I took him completely out of diapers while awake and it only took a few days. He was just ready at that point. I think it's really important to wait until they are ready because kids can be stubborn.....
Right now he is completely daytime trained. He still wears pull-ups to bed because he doesn't always stay dry.
we've had the potty seat for awhile, and she does sit down in it. (19 month old) but she always pees before i take the diaper off.
I bought my daughter a potty when she was 15 months old ( I found a sale I couldnt refuse). She started using it a few days later and soon enough, she was into panties before she was 18 months. It slowed down and she got back into pull-ups at night and in the car. She hasn't been ully trained yet, but I know she's confident and I won't push her. They say the earlier they start, the longer it takes and I know she'll let me know when she's ready again.
I tried using pull ups to train my first but it dragged on and on. Once I finally went diaper free it only took a little while to get him trained. Of course he would poop on the floor as a form of acting out during nap time, but that was it's own set of problems. I'm getting ready to start training my youngest and I'm a little nervous about going diaper free because we have new furniture and carpet instead of hardwood floors. I guess I'm just gonna have to jump in and do it though. Wish me luck.
I don't remember how long it took, but it was definitley no miracle. The first two did it between 2 and 3. Our third just turned 2 and is starting to show some interest. We did the 'naked' thing with both the older boys and I plan to do the same with the third. It worked for us.
Only thing I would say is don't push it or stress over it. Kids are ready at different ages and trying to push them too soon generally only causes frustration - for both parent and child.
Good luck!
"plenty of blankets and sheets"...but I worry the pee will still penatrate into the foam, lol ><
OMGosh!!!! That is an awesome idea!!! My daughter is 14 months today and I think that would be an excellent thing to try. My boys uh they took years my oldest was 3 and middle son was 2. The only reason it got done was because they do everything together, being 11 months apart, so when one got the hang of it so did the other.
sounds like your son is a little young.
I tried no diapers this summer when we where out side a lot but it didn't take and she would get really upset when she peed but never seemed to make it to the potty. We have put it on hold for a few months. Pull ups are a waste b/c they didn't help at all. Good luck they are all ready at a different time and only you know your kid
try this DVD: Potty Power - For Boys & Girls
it really did the trick for me and my son. that and buying big kid underwear with his fave cartoon characters and telling him they'd ger upset with him if he messed on them. =)
Good luck!
I am in the process of potty training my daughter, who will be two next Thursday. As long as she's not wearing pull ups or panties she'll go on the potty, but if she is wearing them more often than not she'll go in her underwear. Slowly but surely she's learning that even with bottoms on she needs to use the potty. I'll be so happy when she's finally out of pull ups and into big girl underwear! Good luck with Sean!
