  • Back to gDiapers: A Good Mix Between Cloth and Disposable

    Mama Hippoby Mama Hippo

I've started using gDiapers with D again (at least during the day, at night we use disposables for extra absorbency... I'm too lazy to change diapers in the middle of the night). Realistically, cloth diapers aren't something we're quite willing to deal with, but I still have some guilt about using disposables. These seem like a really nice compromise. I'm considering trying to talk a friend of mine to let me add some of the used inserts into her compost pile, but for now I've been flushing them and that seems to be working really well. Most of the time it doesn't even require extra water use as I've been saving each insert to flush the next time I use the bathroom anyway. They involve a little more work than disposables, but it's not bad and I must say I do very much like the idea of being able to just flush away poopy diapers rather than keep them in a trash can till it's time to put them out.

Have you used gDiapers before or heard of them? What do you think of this brand of diapers that combines reusable cloth with disposable inserts?

I have heard of them, and personally I use cloth.  I can't see having a monthly fee on top of the choice to use cloth.  I didn't switch from diaposable for "green" reasons, I know its horrible, but honestly the environment is not on the top of my mind.  I harley ever think about it, again, HORRIBLE I know!  I switched to cloth for the health of my baby #1, and for cost saving reasons #2.

I like that there is no added monthly cost in my budget for diapers, and even as little as the cost is for gdiapers, I just can't see having to budget it in.

I do have a stash of size ones (for my my baby to come) and a  stash of size 5s for my one year old.  We are getting ready to do a road trip from NY to OR when I move back to Oregon, and really, I just don't want the hassle of cloths.  The only other time I use disposables is for my daughter when I'm in the hospital and someone else is watching her for a day or two, and then in the first few weeks for my soon to be newborn.  I don't want to use cloth diapers during the meconium and transitional weeks.  And I saw weeks and not days, because it took my daughter 2 weeks to be done transitioning.

Those are so expensive!  This whole "green" movement is really pricey.  Do they mean 'green' as in money?

I think they are a little expensive personally.  I do think they are a good idea and certainly better than disposables.  I rarely use disposables except when I leave JJ with my mom or sometimes my hubby.  Even though I think they are a bit pricey, I think that I will invest in them.  I would rather leave my son in those than in the disposable diapers.  I will probably use disposables when we take a trip to Ohio just because I don't want to be bothered with cloth diapers in the car or at my MIL house.

I don't use cloth diapers for the environment although it does play a small part in it. I use it because it is better for my son's health.

That's great you're using g-diapers! I've been tempted to try them, but I'm already using cloth and spent a pretty penny to do so. I'm glad you like them though! Maybe with baby #2 I'll try some!

    'sposies are cheaper, I think.

I'm about to go cloth, I'm buying them used from a friend so it will cost me about half what they were new.

I've never heard of those before, but I checked out the website and it seems like an outstanding thing-
high fives on your Green compromise! :)

I came across gDiapers when my boyfriend and I were looking at ways to diaper our baby once it's born...  They seem like a nice compromise between disposable and cloth, but we decided to go with cloth because of the cost savings in the long run (and he's really into the "green" movement).

My opinion is that every little bit helps!  You are doing something for the environment, and that's a whole lot better than nothing!

Great Job going green. It's not hard to get a compost started and that would really make sense for you now that you've got these little g's.
We use Cloth. Yep it's cheaper. (Also disposables sometimes--at night etc.) But if you "can't" do cloth then great choice for not using all those "landfill diapers" as I call them.
