  • Christmas Shopping in September?

    by Mama Koala

I got an email from ToysRus about a Buy 2 Get 1 Free promotion they're having this week. I love "Get 1 Free" deals, and so of course, I had to look. As I browsed the deals online, I started making a list of children I wanted to get gifts for this year to see if they'd like any of the toys on sale. Papa Koala is the youngest of five, so we have a bunch of nephews and nieces on his side of the family. Even though we might not even see them for Christmas, we're planning to go visit in mid-December and I'd love to have something to give them, especially since we don't see them often.

Mega Bloks and Melissa & Doug puzzles would be great hits with my nieces, but then it occurred to me that it's not even October...where oh where would I store boxes and bags of bulky toys in our 2BR apartment? I've always been one to shop super early for Christmas (if there's a good deal) because I absolutely hate the crowds and lines in stores during the holiday rush, especially with a baby in tow. Plus, the "Type A" in me just loves to check check check off the names on my list way in advance. But now that we share our home with a curious toddler, I doubt boxes and bags of fun stuff would be left alone unless stored in a closet...so perhaps this is the first year I'll have to wait until December to shop for Christmas . Amazon.com usually has some amazing deals after Thanksgiving, so that's where I'll probably do my toy shopping if I don't go to ToysRus this time around.

When do you start shopping for holiday gifts? Do you enjoy store shopping during the festive holiday season, or would you rather skip the crowds and order gifts online?

I have already began my Christmas shopping and plan to be finished by Thanksgiving. No standing in long lines of mad shoppers for me a week before Christmas!! Having two small children this year (2 year old and 4 month old) I will be glad for any shopping I can do online as well!!

Anytime is Christmas shopping time for me! I have two friends who were born on Boxing Day, so I usually take them out shopping and let them buy anything they want (under $100).

It depends though. If I know what I want to get the person, or see something I like, I'll buy it as early as August.

id rather do it ahead of time. around the beginning of December or so, but it never works that way. as long as its not a few days before, im fine though. the pressure revs me up

We started shopping over the summer.  My plan is to be done before Christmas!!  Doesn't always work out that way, but it's my plan!

I was just Christmas shopping tonight... I am about halfway finished already!  I try to be done before Thanksgiving!  I spend a lot less money that way.  And it is nice to just relax.

I was just sorting and storing some Christmas gifts that I got in the mail this week - I love to order online and I typically start in July.  Got a late start this year, thought!

I just love Christmas and can't bear to wait until November to start my shopping!  Besides - I prefer to avoid the crowds....

I Christmas shop all the time but I do most of my shopping online anyway.

I hate crowds. You think I've been pushed enough times to do my shopping early, but I absolutely loathe shopping with all my being, so I end up waiting for the last minute.

I always plan to get all my shopping done early, but the problem is, I don't always know what to get my in-laws. My husband is a serious procrastinator, so we usually end up doing some last-minute Christmas shopping for his parents... *sigh* I do hate those crowds - people can be so rude before Christmas! I always wonder where their Christmas spirit is. I guess it's reserved for family only

I've already started my Christmas shopping, too!  I'm pretty much done with all the kids on my list, so I'm already about 1/4 of the way finished.  Glad to know I'm not the only crazy person to start her Christmas shopping in the middle of summer! :)

I like to christmas shop right after christmas when everything is on sale.   Or I might see something at different times during the year and buy it when I see it. I hide it for the next year and it's all good.No going out in the Prime christmas shopping months, no skidding of my car in the fresh snow and I do have to deal with the quater of a millon other americans doing just that.

I Christmas shop for the entire year. Whenever I see something I think someone will like and it's a price I can afford, I pick it up. I keep a great big box in my garage where I pile all the presents, and I have listed on the outside everyone's names. That's where I keep a tally as I buy gifts, so that I can see at a glance who I have plenty of gifts for, and who needs a few more.

I started back in MAY!  We have lots of kiddos to buy for in addition to my son (who is turning one on Dec. 2nd so nothing too major for him yet) so whenever I find something on clearance or for a great deal that's age appropriate for one of the nieces/nephews I grab it.  So far I haven't spent more than $5 on a single kid and managed to snag great things that retail for betwen $15-20.  We are on a tight budget but still get great things! We also have a smallish house but I can usually find a spot.  It's worth having to see this stuff for most of the year
