  • Offensive Maternity Shirts?

    by princess_deidre

So I have two pregnant friends right now, and that means I'm more conscious of maternity and baby clothes. I LOVE to buy either for expecting pals!

I was telling one of these friends about a funny maternity shirt I saw online that said, "I just wanted a back rub". She told me she had ordered one that says, "Epidurals are for sissies". I wondered how many other cute shirts I could find.

So for all of you expecting moms, here are some more great maternity shirts:

    "Don't...touch...the...belly." long sleeve top

    "Fertile Myrtle" tank top

Long sleeve "Can you tell me if my shoes don't match?"

    "Body By Baby" maternity tank

Even the dads can get in on the action...

"I'm having what she's having" father t-shirt" (Love that one!)

"Diaper Duty Daddy" New Dad Shirt

    "Mama's Boy" + "Boy's Mama" set

In addition to these 'cute' shirts, I was surprised to find some that could be considered offensive...

"I should have had a HEADACHE!" long sleeve

    "Got epidural?" tank top

"I am a Mom therefore I drink" tank top

"Daddy's Little Helpers" beer and remote acid wash tee

"They whine, I drink wine." "Caution: May whine at any time"

Okay, at first, I had a link to the website but I've removed it because I don't want anyone thinking I'm against this website for having some shirts I think are somewhat offensive. They only make what sells, I'm sure. I just wonder why some of it sells?! Did this surprise anyone else?

I'm not a mother yet, so am I being clueless or do you think some of these border on the offensive too?

I like those.  See the only people who don't find them funny are the ones who lack a sense of humor and aren't very fun. ha ha

.......I definitely don't think these are offensive or close to offensive. How would someone possibly be offended?

  • raved@xanga

They're silly and are meant to make people laugh. I would buy some of those if I was a mother.

I don't know, maybe I'm weird, but I really didn't mind people touching the belly.  Actually I loved the attention, haha.  And I found form fitting shirts to be more comfortable.  Less like you're wearing a tent.  Less hot, too.  Though I don't like shirts that let too much belly poke out the bottom.  I don't really find any of these offensive except the one about having a headache.  It sounds like they're ungrateful for their sweet little blessing.  And I love "Can you tell me if my shoes don't match?"  Hilarious.

  • PING_DA_ROBOT_GIRL@xanga

Is it just me or do some of those models look like they're not actually pregnant?  I mean other than the ones who're obviously not.  I dunno maybe I'm hallucinating.

  • sssurveyyy@xanga

I didn't find any of those offensive. Some of them are pretty cute. When I was pregnant I wanted to buy a maternity shirt that had footprints on the belly and said "What's kickin'?" :)

However, a little over a year ago a friend of my sisters had just had a baby, and brought him over to our house wearing a onesie that said "Broken condom." Now THAT is offensive. I was very upset with her and confronted her about it. Her excuse was "It's not like he can read." Ugh!

@PING_DA_ROBOT_GIRL@xanga - I encouraged people to touch my belly, I loved them being as excited as I was! I also never felt more beautiful in my entire life than when I was pregnant. I only wore form fitting shirts so that my belly would look bigger haha.

  • death_by_chocolat@xanga

I think people can get offended at anything =/

  • lyrics_and_lists@xanga

i'm not a mother, and i don't plan onbeing one fora while [i'm 17] but i think the shirts aren't meant to be taken seriously, by any means. they remind me of the shirts you'd find at hot topic[ex. hamster on the wheel]. they're ridiculous shirts but not one actually considers themselves hamsters on the wheel of life. that's a bad example. but it's simple.

  • Bellasmommy1988@xanga

I think the shirts about drinking are somewhat offensive but i dont drink and I also dont beleave in drinking in front of your child, but that is my opinion and everyone has there own opinion on things like this.

  • filtered_sunlight@xanga

Surprise? No. Offend? Not so much. I think some of them are tacky and/or trashy...just like pretty much anything with the word "Princess" on it in maternity ["Princess on Board"] or even just baby clothes. So I don't buy them and if I see someone wearing one? I back away slowly.

  • lotta_valdez@xanga

    Stupid, yes.  Offensive, no.

  • Conformist_Metaljunk@xanga

Er. Some of those are just plaindamn tasteless. Just cos youre preganat doesn't mean we have to share the pain.

  • taxicabconfessionals@xanga

My sports coach was pregnant last year and she had a tank top that said "Coming This Summer." It was very adorable.

  • Battie@xanga

i loved the first one 'do not touch the belly'! i'll *never* understand why random strangers think it's ok to touch a pregnant womans belly when they'd never dare lay a hand on a womans belly who *wasn't* pregnant. i really don't like being touched at all & touchey-feely people usually walk away injured when they get too close to me. and when i was pregnant this was a HUGE souce of irritation because it's not like i could move away quickly or anything. people are so stupid.

  • Grapeclover@xanga

I am not sure how any of those shirts are really offensive. They are all just trying to be humorous. It isn't as if they have offensive language or all vulgar. I think anyone that gets offended by what someone else wears has way too much time on their hands. In my opinion if you don't like it don't wear it or buy it. Let everyone else do as they please.

  • NotUeberMommy

I don't think I would wear any of them, except the "Don't touch the belly" one - it always annoyed me when perfect strangers came up to me and touched my belly without asking - hellloooo??? I have a friend who once grabbed a man by his you-know-what when he did that. She "let's see how you like it!" I would never do that, but it just goes to show, hormones can do strange things to a woman!!

  • Katliin@xanga

I wouldn't exactly call them offensive. Perhaps stupid. Different people have different sense of humor.

Personally, I think the "offensive" ones are just rude. More of a novelty shirt thing and not meant to be actually worn.

  • ELDD@xanga

Love the one "Dont touch the belly" i did not and still dont appreciate how women and men that i dont know think they have the ok to touch any pg women's belly. It's not for sale hello!

  • atr0phyc0mpassion@xanga

i have no idea why any mother would wear that drinking shirt. what a great example for your kids. also makes you look like an irresponsible parent

  • AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga

Some of them are cute, some of them are tacky. I don't think the got edidural? tank top is bad, but I think the rest of the "offensive" ones aren't very tasteful. I'm a mom of 1, pregnant with #2.

  • princess_riceball@xanga

I think I'm less bothered by the shirts, and more bothered by the idea of people regretting being pregnant and having a t-shirt to express that.  A pregnancy should be a happy thing, especially if you have the money to buy special maternity clothes.

  • Punk_Rock_Mommy@xanga

I love the Got Epidural? one.  I think it's hilarious!  Would I wear it?  Probably as a night shirt.  Now, I really want one that says "I Make Milk.  What's Your Superpower?"

  • Punk_Rock_Mommy@xanga

@filtered_sunlight@xanga - I saw a pregnant teenager with those sweat pants on that have a message across the backside.  The pants said "What a Catch."  I thought to myself "Really?  You think?"  I ran into her a few times because we went to the same doctor.  Wonder how she's doing?
