  • "I'd Rather Be in Labor, or Anything But This"

    Mama Turtleby Mama Turtle

toothacheI came down with a minor cold late last week, that I imagine I picked up from the kids or from Papa Turtle. It became a sinus infection but wasn't horrible or anything. But, then the sinus infection started bothering my tooth that still needs attention and by Saturday I was wincing. By Sunday night I was in tears. Actually sobbing through the peaks.

I've had a handful of very painful toothaches that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies, but I've never experienced anything that brought me to my knees like that. I was almost hyperventilating and I don't hyperventilate. All I could think was "I'd rather be in labor, or anything but this." The only other time pain brought me to continual tears was when I broke my little toe - and I didn't so much as even pop a tylenol then.

By 3 or 4 am this morning when things finally settled down enough for me to drift off to sleep, I'd consumed a total of five Tylenol, 800 mgs of ibuprofin, squirted out almost a half a tube of Orajel, and used and chewed on a few cloves of garlic. Yeouch. I'm usually really judicious with the painkillers, especially when pregnant, but last night I just did not care. Things would subside for a bit, and then come screaming back. It felt like someone was stabbing me in the eye, the temple, my cheek, and add that to the pain radiating through my whole upper right jaw. I also double dosed on Papa Turtle's generic antibiotics leftovers from last month, just in case, and took two more today, even though I know that spells yeast infection for me. That's how bad I didn't care.

I woke up yesterday morning exhausted but the pain was 98% gone; I could feel a twinge where the worst of it was that made me nervous but thankfully nothing developed.  I'm still kind of shell shocked from the whole thing. When you break a bone or a molar, or go through back labor, you think wow, that was about the peak of pain right there, it sucked, but I'm ok. Nothing I've experienced could touch this though. I now know what my threshold limit is lol. Good to know?

Oh, the dental insurance finally kicks in next month, and I'll be trying for appt's as soon as I get my cards in the mail next week. So, help is coming, eventually.

My sinus infection has mostly subsided though I'm a bit stuffed up still, yet the cold went down in my chest. Everything from the throat down feels raw. But I'm so thankful (knock on wood) that the blinding stabbing pain hasn't come back that I hardly mind. I'm just going to devote the next few days taking it easy - though, I mostly was taking it easy to begin with hahaha. I don't expect baby to be here for a few more weeks but I want to be sure I'm feeling ok for when I do go into labor!

What's the worst pain you've experienced during pregnancy? Was it due to the pregnancy, or something completely unrelated?

Toothache !!! With all 3 of mine I managed to get a doozy of one just weeks b4 my due date  and no dentist would touch it . I'll take the 9 mo. of being sick the c-section and the recovery over that one wk. of toothache!!!

This is what I tell people when they look at me as if I'd grown a second head after stating that labour isn't that bad. I was a whiny, crying, inconsolable, horrible mess with a toothache. I could.not.function. My mil got to see me, rolling around on the bed in absolute tears mumbling incoherently. It was a gazillion times worse than my medication-free labour and delivery of my son. A trillion-gazillion times.

Other than labor, the most pain was my ribs! The last few months seriously felt like someone was just ripping my ribs a part - which I suppose they were! ha...

Um, your pregnant? And you used ibuprofen? I'm pretty sure that was something my doctor stressed to me NOT to take.

But yea, besides that I'm pretty sure labor was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life, that last few pushes where my daughter's shoulder's ripped through into the world.

Worst pain I've experienced (i'm due to have my first child in Feb, so I haven't had pain) is either kidney stones...or a D&C.

  • unda_incendia@xanga

im a little worried about you taking all those meds while youre pregnant :(

i was told by my oral surgeon to go to the pharmacy and get Oil of Clove. its all natural and over the counter, u just have to ask for it. it works a miricle on a toothache. i developed dry sockets after having all of my wisdom teeth taken out and when i couldnt get to the office to have the sockets packed the surgoen told me to drip the oil into the holes, and honestly it was wonderful. my dry socket pain was 100 times worse then hen i delivered my son and the oil took care of it just as well as the crap the surgeon was packing it with.

I have to say that my labor was the most pain that I experienced during pregnancy. I had a full on Pitocin birth. It was horrible, I did finally break and got the Epidural but it didn't work and I felt everything. Including when my doctor cut without numbing because there was no time to numb they had to get my son out then.

um, an absessed tooth that sounded just like your ordeal... i called my mother begging her to find a dental ER one morning at 5am. it was the most excruciating pain i have ever been in. or maybe it was the time when they drilled out one of my permanent teeth from the roof of my mouth... after they put braces on me and pulled out a handful of other permanent teeth and tried to PULL the tooth down from the roof of my mouth. have i ever mentioned that i have bad dental genetics? 3 root canals, umpteen cavities, multiple permanent teeth pulled.... and i have two little cavities screaming at me as we speak. i hate teeth.

Hope things get better son.  Toothaches and sinus infections are no joke!

the worst pain I ever experienced pregnant or not was the incision from the surgery I had to remove an ovarian cyst while I was pregnant.  It was horrible.

  • tembleque91@xanga

Been there and would have taken anything in the world to make it stop..

Seriously Anything.. Lucky mine wasnt during pregnancy..

You have my deepest sympathies. I had to have a tooth pulled in July because I couldn't eat. I couldn't even function. All I wanted to do was curl up in bed and sleep because when I was asleep, it didn't hurt. They made the choice to pull it because I couldn't eat and my OB was already concerned that I wasn't gaining enough weight. They gave me Tylenol with Codiene and told me only to take it if I really, really needed it. I just went to sleep and called it a day.

Now, I've got this wonderful pinched nerve thing going on with my hip/leg. It's this great sharp pain that takes my breath away when I roll over in bed, take a step while walking, put weight on it while standing, or sit too long. Sprinkled with a little of the prickly feeling you get when your foot falls asleep...only in the hip/leg.

In the earlier days of pregnancy, I had so much morning sickness that I ended up pulling muscle in my chest. It hurt to breathe. It hurt every time I would dare to take in even the slowest breath. And! I got to pack up our apartment so that we could move during that same period in time. Not fun.

I'm starting to suspect that labor will be a walk in the park at this point.

I seriously understand your pain right now

    I hope your doing better!

  • AcisseJay@xanga

Aw. I hope your tooth ache stays away.

As far as pain, I'd take labor over gallstones any day of the week.

  • mamaturtle

@futureburgerkingemployee@xanga - while in the moment, I couldn't even crawl to the computer to double check but a few days ago a friend did let me know about that and I haven't taken any since that first night.

@johnandchels@xanga - ouch. I haven't been to the dentist in quite a while and I'm pretty sure I'll be making a series of visits myself before I'm up to snuff.

  • futureburgerkingemployee@xanga

Yea, I just thought I'd let you know.

I think your not supposed to take it because it thins your blood and may lead to premature labor, or yanno, something like that.I just remember my doctor being like "Either suffer or carefully take Tylenol."
  • Thegirlwhoknowstoomuch@xanga

Please please please do not take antibiotics you may not need. More
importantly, the one who was prescribed antibiotics should have taken
them all. The point is to kill all the bacteria, not to kill all but
the most resistant bacteria, which can then multiply.

I'm sorry about your toothache, and I hope you feel better soon!

I had a VERY similar experience with my second pregnancy..something about pregnancy always causes tooth aches for me and this one I literally was shaking and told everyone it was worse than labor. lol it really was

  • addicted2tats@xanga

During pregnancy was my right rib cage my son must of had his feet wedged in there it became numb after awhile and totally sucked but that was before I had a tattoo. Or labor itself but right after you are no longer pregnant sooo.... I am a wimp but made it through without an epidural or anything the worst part was when she cut me omg I screamed and swore a bit. But actually labor is not as bad as a tooth ache. I even think my tattoo hurt worse.

  • blogging_or_therapy@xanga

I can sympathize, had an abscessed tooth, needed surgery, when my oldest was a newborn, didn't have dental insurance, so I put it off, ended up in so much agony, had to take an antibiotic for 3 days before I could have the surgery, and then finally they took it out. Now, whenever I have sinus problems, my wisdom teeth ache, or where my wisdom teeth should be.
