  • Preschool "Curriculum" Decided!

    Mama Butterflyby Mama Butterfly

I had posted a few weeks ago about wanting to find a curriculum for my almost 3 year old son, R. I realized after posting that "curriculum" was a bit of a strong word for what I was actually looking for. I was hoping to find something that would be fun, age appropriate, hold his attention and familiarize him with his letters and numbers. I didn't want it to be complicated and I didn't want it to be too "schoolish" since that wasn't my intention. He enjoys reading books and learning letters, and I want to encourage that as much as possible.

After posting and getting recommendations, as well as browsing at some local stores, I did end up purchasing a little kit and am really happy with it. I happened upon it accidentally at Target - and it was 50% off. It is a Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read Pre-K Edition.

Normally it is $39.99, but it was on sale for $19.98. I honestly don't know that I would have paid full price for it, but it was definitely worth the $20. It includes 3 workbooks, 2 CD roms, a book to read, parent guide with ideas, and a lot of stickers and flash cards.

This morning R was a little bored, so we got it out and he had a lot of fun! For each letter, there is a coloring page, computer game and flash cards and stickers. R loved sitting on my lap and "playing" the computer game. He couldn't quite do it by himself, simply because he isn't quite adept at using the mouse yet, but once he gets the hang of it, I think he'll be able to play. He colored his "A" picture and a little while later climbed back up to the computer and found the letter A on the keyboard. He hadn't recognized that letter prior to today, so I feel like our 15 minutes this morning was successful!

I do not plan on having any type of structured time of teaching him, but I'm sure we'll end up getting it out a few times a week to work on. I enjoy teaching him things, and often surprise myself with my patience level, but unfortunately I am not the most creative when it comes to teaching, so this really helped me today with some fun ways of helping him learn without being too intentional. This particular kit focuses totally on letters, so I may still try to find something for numbers, especially if he ends up going through these books on the quicker side. It's so fun to watch him enjoy learning!!
