  • Love/Hate Relationship with Technology

    Mama Monkeyby Mama Monkey

computerI like technology just as much as the next gal...most of the time. But as I sit here having to use my husband's computer because ours is busted again (and I can't put our pictures on his work computer), I can't help but hate it. I swear our computer has been breaking down every other month and it has really been a hassle. Thing is, this time it is something small and stupid...the cord. Yup, the cord is not working right, so our computer is getting no power...can't even charge the battery (wait, the battery is junk too). A cord seems simple enough right? But it isn't. Turns out we can only get the cord we need from Dell and it isn't exactly cheap. What makes it worse is that we actually replaced the cord not long ago because it did the same thing, so now we are wondering if it is actually something with the computer that is frying the cords. RAH!! But, I asked my hubby to call Dell about it because the new cord shouldn't have fried that fast so I am hoping we can get it replaced at no cost to us, but who knows.

It just seems like all this technological stuff can end up causing more trouble than it is worth sometimes. And it is never inexpensive to fix it.  I was just reading an article the other day on the new keys they have come out with in the last couple years. They actually have a small chip in them that communicates with the car...and your car won't start without that communication. So, if you loose a key you end up shelling out $500 to get a new one that will actually start the car. K - you used to be able to go to a hardware store and get a new key made for a couple of bucks! I don't know about you, but I'm not sure the chance of somebody trying to swipe my car is worth having a $500 key (then again, I live in a pretty small town where most people don't even lock their cars and some just leave the keys in the ignition anyhow).

Anybody else ever get fed up with technology? Or miss getting REAL letters instead of e-mails all the time?

Well first off, the problem is not you, or technology, it's DELL lol. I have always had problems with my Dell batteries and power cords. And Dell makes sure that you can only get Dell equipment directly from them, which is costly, and a hassle.... I don't get fed up with technology, but I do miss 'real' letters and cards. I still try to send 'real' cards or letters to people as much as I can, I think it makes people feel special.

I agree 100%.  The biggest part of technology I hate is cell phones.  People are always talking - but never about anything important.   Communication is still lacking!  People are often shocked when they ride in my car with me.  I have a 2008 (and before that a 2007 until it got totaled) that has manual windows and manual locks.  You would be surprised at how many people say "I didnt know they still made that..."  But hey, one less electronic thing to go wrong with my car!!  And there is definitely something about getting something in the mail box other than a bill that brightens you day!

I've been pretty frustrated at car alarms lately. It's quite embarrassing when your alarm goes off in the middle of the night, or if you're trying to get into your car (after unlocking it the same way you always do) and the alarm suddenly goes off...and you can't figure out how to shut it off or start the engine. BOTH our cars have been giving us alarm trouble, and I now wish there was a simple switch to disable the alarms completely. I tried googling for the solution, but disabling a car alarm requires messing with the wiring, and I don't feel comfortable doing that. Technology is so awesome when it works, but it sure is a pain when it doesn't!

Your first problem isn't your chord or Dell...it's the fact of a laptop. I work with a laptop every day and I hate it. I can't wait to get home and use my desktop. If your desktop's chord goes, which never happens, it's a $5 at Wal-Mart fix. Desktops don't ave near the mobility of a laptop, but they're less of a headache.

But yes, I love getting "actual" mail instead of junk and bills all the time. To be perfectly honest, I don't even look at e-cards. Not the same, sorry.

And the thing with the keys is just insane. You can buy a junker for your teenager for the cost of a key. Technology is a great thing, but our lives have become do dependent on it that we just don't seem to know what to do when it breaks down.

@mamakoala - where do you live? i know some people who would mess with wiring...namely, my boyfriend. we're in ohio.

but i understand the problems completely. i'm starting to hate cell phones (i work for AT&T wireless) and all the things that can go wrong! and computers...dell is the worst...i've had soooo many problems w/ my dell laptop that when it died the last time...i gave up. i will get another laptop sometime, but when?  or who? not dell!

Yes, I get fed up with technology sometimes. It's definitely a love/hate relationship over here, but I can't imagine not having some of the things that we have. I LOVE getting snail mail and sometimes still write actual letters to friends and family.

I haven't had good Dell experiences either. In fact my dear hubby's previous Dell laptop had cord issues as well. Mine just plum started falling apart (the case was cracking apart and eventually it was only held on by one hinge at the time of trade-in), and after two personal bad Dell experience we are now trying a Sony laptop (hubby) and an Acer (mine). Sony has had a few minor issues, but one of the reasons hubby picked Sony is because of the longer warranty. Companies don't build these sort of things to last because they want you to trade in and buy a new one in a year or two as new technology comes out.

since i've been blogging on xanga, nobody calls me or write me anymore.  they can just read about my blog.  i do love the key technology tho.  i can have my key in my pocket, and as soon as i get close enough, it'll automatically unlock itself, and all i needed to do to start the car is pushing a button.  but i do think that technology is best suited for lazy people, like myself.  when it comes to computers, these companies make the most money from selling accessories.  good luck with the cord.
