• Late "Labor Day" Meme: A Quiz on Labor and Delivery

    Mama Turtleby Mama Turtle

I haven't done one of these in a while. I had a ton of baby hugs (Braxton Hicks to be more formal) contractions all weekend so my upcoming labor has been on the brain a lot...

    How long were your labors?

    1. 12 hours active
    2. 5 hours from start to finish (induced)
    3. 12 hours active
    4. 6 hours active

How did you know you were in labor?

    1. Contractions that were painless kept coming starting sometime around 3-4am. I couldn't get back to sleep and was mostly awake for more than 36 hours. Yikes. I always tell new moms "Don't walk all over the place, just rest, if you can". I spent the whole day walking: the whole neighborhood, the grocery store, the hallways of the hospital. Finally I plunked my rear down on my mom's couch and had ice cream. Active labor picked up after that.
    2. An hour or so after Cervadil was applied and I had eaten a "yummy" hospital dinner, I could feel the changes in my cervix going on. I got up off the bed and walked around in circles, labor pretty much jump started within fifteen minutes. It was one of my most intense labors because it was on the fast side.
    3. Prodromal labor started in the morning and went all day. We took a trip to the mall to walk around and have some dinner. Around the kids' bedtime my water broke, and active labor started right after that.
    4. Again, with the prodromal labor, starting in the morning and lasting all day. Around 10pm I couldn't sit still and paced around for a few hours. Then I lounged on the floor with pillows and blankets until after 4am when baby arrived.

    Where did you deliver?

    1. A teaching hospital, in L&D
    2. Same teaching hospital, in L&D, risked out of the birthing center there
    3. At home. On the bed
    4. At home. On the floor

    Drugs?

    1. Shot of nubain that let me doze for an hour before a long transition kicked in
    2. Cervadil, shot of nubain that left me high for 15 minutes (and I was in the same amount of pain) -I fought my way out of that "rabbit hole" so I could stay in charge as much as possible, IV pitocin post partum (that wasn't needed)
    3. No
    4. No

    C-section?

    None.

    Who caught the baby?

    1. Resident I saw throughout my pregnancy.
    2. Different resident that I saw throughout my pregnancy
    3. Me!
    4. Hubby!

How about you? What are your answers to these questions?

    1. 17 hours start to finish (induced)

    2. 8 hours active

How did you know you were in labor?

    1. I don't really remember much of it - too drugged up to recall. It was all really blurry.

    2. Contractions coming every 5 minutes starting about 5 am. Around 10 am they got more painful and closer together. At that point my mom came to get my son, hubby came home from work and my midwife came over.

    1. L&D at a hospital

    2. My bathtub at home

    1. Pitocin, IV pain meds, epidural. Ugh...won't be doing all that again. Ever.

    2. None, thank goodness

    Who caught the baby?

    1. OB I saw throughout pregnancy

    2. Midwife

Fun idea. I like this post :)

    The resident caught the baby.

  • cjamos@xanga

I was in mild labor for 5 hours then went to the hospital and had the baby with in 45 min. I didn't get any drugs since things went so fast. The midwife caught the baby my husband was there but he is not much help and wasn't going to look at what was going on down there. I have 2 beutiful girls with out spending more then 10 hours in labor. I guess it is good to have a big but.

    How long were your labors?

7 hrs start to finish
about the same
had been contracting since 26 weeks, but labor was about seven hours
had been contracting since 20 weeks, but labor was six or so hours. How did you know you were in labor?

Woke up at two in the morning with a bloody show. Did you know that NO ONE mentioned that to me? I didn't even read about it in any books or on the message board. BIG SHOCK! Started having contractions soon after. Was working through for a natural birth. Sadly, didn't get it.

I was already in labor for this one. No bloody show, but good contractions.

I was induced for this one. But already having painful contractions.

Pitocin again, but had been having contractions for a long long time!Where did you deliver?

Women's in Baton Rouge

3, and 4. A great hospital with the son of one of my husband's attendings. AWESOME guy!Drugs?

I was going for natural labor, but do to serious complications had an epi to stop my labor. I hate that drug! Bad side effects!

Once again had an epi. My mom convinced me. Swore to never have it again!
My husband wasn't here for this one. So just my mom and mother in law. To get them and the nurse to shut up I had something (can't remember it at the moment, brain went blank) It was awful. I kept falling asleep between contrax. and couldn't speak clearly. To add to that MIL and SIL (whom I asked to LEAVE) made fun of me for it in Sunday school. They still do!

Only the pitocin. The contrax were constant in my life and wouldn't progress. Other than that it was natural. The best birth yet!!C-section?

None, though came close with my first. The baby was in distress. I was give fifteen minutes to get him unstuck or they were going in. (He was stuck in the birth canal. Even change of position couldn't get him out. They gave me an epi to halt my labor once I started near seizures. I fell asleep and they were able to ease him out with a full episitomie. Not fun!

    Who caught the baby?

        1. My doc's caught the babies. Though I was immediately given and able to nurse all but the first. He was taken to respiratory techs.

I only have one child, but these are my answers.
    How Long Was you Labor?
6 hours from the time that the doctor broke my water to delievery 9 hours from the time that Pitocin was started.
How did you know you were in labor?
I was induced so I was hooked up to monitors and had my water broke and all of that jazz. Not the birth that I had in mind
    Where did you deliever?
At to local hospital, it was really my only choice
    Drugs?
Pictocin, which was the wrost thing that I could have ever agreed to.
Nubain, which was not but choice
Epidural, I finally gave in my contrations were only 8 seconds apart and then the stupid thing did not even work!
    C-section
Almost, my mom and the doctor had talked, without me knowing and the doctor had told her if I was not pushing by 11 I was going down for a C-section, I started pushing at 10:45.
    Who caught the baby?
my doctor did. I wanted to but was told that I was not allowed to.
Overall my birth experince ended up being the exact opposite of what I wanted and will be further researching my options when I have my next child.

  • averyswife@xanga

17 hours of labor (induced starting with Cervadil) in the hospital with an epidural after 12 hours without one and the doctor caught my baby girl. This time around I'm hoping it'll be a whole lot more natural.

  • Andrea_TheNerd@xanga

    How long were your labors?

I was in labor for 25 hours. What's with all you short-labor people?

How did you know you were in labor?

I woke up at 4 am feeling sick, and went to the bathroom. As I woke up more, I realized it wasn't my bowels moving, it was contractions. I also had a spot of blood. I told my husband, and he said "drink some water and it will stop". He was hoping he could get more sleep!

    Where did you deliver?

In the hospital that was pre-approved by Medicaid.

    Drugs?

They gave me a shot of something that worked for only an hour, so they gave me an epidural, which worked so well I got a 2-hour nap right up until delivery.

    C-section?

    None.

    Who caught the baby?

Not sure who, I wasn't wearing my glasses. I know my mom cut the cord.
