  • Boys and Their Pee: Learning to Use the Potty

    Mama Foxby Mama Fox

Bodily functions are of course a main topic of discussion in a house of boys.

Fox1 has started to wet the bed. Since we have moved, he completely gave up naps. We believe he's sleeping so hard that he doesn't wake up when he needs to go. We've been limiting liquids after 6pm, making sure he goes before bed, and again if he's awake for a while. It's getting better but for a little while, there I was washing sheets every day. Thank goodness for waterproof mattress covers.

Potty learning is going okay with Fox2. We've had successes and accidents. He's getting better at telling me when he needs to go. I've been frustrated and happy. I'm glad I have a steam cleaner and a mop.  The last couple of days he's been hiding in the kitchen while he goes. Although that tile is so much easier to clean, he knows he needs to go, yet doesn't tell me or go into the bathroom. That's what we are working on this week.

With Fox1, I taught him to go sitting down. It seemed easiest. After he mastered that, we had him stand up. Aiming took some practice but most of the pee made it into the toilet. With Fox2, I started with him sitting down the same way. But one time he told me he wanted to stand up like Fox1. Okay. Trying to teach a 2-year-old how to aim is proving to be a bit more difficult than expected, but with my help, everything made it into the toilet. Now I ask him if he wants to stand or sit. Of course, he wants to stand. After the first couple times with help, he caught on and is fairly good with his aim. I'll still hover, though, waiting to take control if I need to. That boy can pee! I'm waiting for the day when he just turns and my bathroom ends up pee soaked.

Fox3 and I are doing good with EC.  I haven't been trying to catch everything, mostly just after waking and nursing. He's going in his potty chair about 3 or 4 times a day. He seems to get the point and often starts going pretty much as soon as I set him down, which is great! I'm working my way towards full time over the next month. I'm keeping him in diapers for now, but being extra vigilant with changing him as soon as he wets. I don't want him getting used to wet diapers the way Fox2 is/was.

So between bed wetting, potty learning, and EC, "pee/potty" is a very common word 'round here right now. At least there's no bathroom humor involved.

How did/do you deal with bed wetting and "accidents" while teaching your children to use the potty?

We have gone through this with our older son and now with our younger son.  Our girls had no trouble.  We are doing the same thing we did with the older.  Limiting the drinks as you said, making sure they go before bed of course, then sometimes I will get him up to go again before I go to bed.  That is a pain really.  He is such a hard sleeper and I feel so bad getting him up.  If I do that though he doesn't wet the bed.  My older son got to the point where being wet would wake him up.  He would take his wet sheets off his bed, put them in the bathroom and put new sheets on his bed all himself.  My youngest has not started to do this, but I do have him help me in the morning clean things up.  My older son had this problem until he was about 8.  That means 2 more years with our younger if he holds to that pattern.  We don't make a big deal about it, we know it's not his fault and he will eventually out grow it.
So I guess I don't have a lot of advice other than, just be patient and matter of fact when dealing with it and "this to shall pass" as the saying goes.

I was going to suggest waking him up when you go to bed as well. Mostly he willstillstay asleep, quickly pee and then go back into bed without any problems... or accidents.

It sounds like you're doing great, and your patience with your children is a huge gift to them all during this process!

Just a suggestion but let Fox2 put some cherrios in the toilet to aim at.  I know they sell "targets" at babies-r-us that only dissolve when urine hits it but I think cherrios work just as well.
      Good Luck
O BTW  What are the ages of your boys?  My son is 2 and we are thinking about starting him in the potty training...tried b4 and it didn't work so good so we backed off for a bit.
