  • High Percentage of Women Watching the Olympics -- Could It Be Because of Michael Phelps?

    by babyfever25

The other day when I was reading The New York Times, I came across an article about how there is a high percentage of women viewers watching the Olympics. A chunk of the article mentions:

"IT could be considered the Sisterhood of the Traveling Olympics: Every two and a half years, a group of female friends gathers for a viewing party to watch the skating events in the Winter Games and events like the gymnastics and swimming in the Summer Games.

For the entire 2004 Summer Games, 50 percent of the audience on NBC was composed of women ages 18 and older, according to the data, followed by their male counterparts, at 40 percent.

By comparison, the NBC data showed, women ages 18 and older made up 39 percent of the audience for another major TV sports event, Super Bowl XLII in February, with men ages 18 and older at 47 percent.

“I was talking to my mother last night,” Mr. Gardiner said on Monday, “and she said: ‘I’ve got to get off the phone. I’ve got to watch the gymnastics.""

Each year, women gather to watch the Olympics, sort of as a "cultural"or "annual" thing. Other women watch it because they are impressed withswimmer, Michael Phelps, who is not only hot, (yes, I said it! ) but because he was called by a fan as somewhat of a "superhuman." I mean, how is it possible to win 8 swimming medals against other trained and assertive athletes? The man's got talent, if you ask me!

Do you watch the Olympics every year? What do you think about Michael Phelps' success thus far?
